Wife and I were discussing life plans today and we both want to live in the mountains. She enjoys the amenities of city life, but also would want some land as well, so we would be looking within 30-40minute drive from Asheville, and 10 minutes or so from a town with a decent grocery store. Also, I would need a job in an engineering field, likely manufacturing. What's the scoop on the area?

From what I recall of my Delivery day's, there are a lot of Factories & Warehouse, along the I-26 area, from Flat Rock-Dana-Fletcher-, & Enka areas.
As for "engineers",I don't know.

I had some family that moved to Marshall but the people are a little different there so they sold there land there and went a litter farther out to del rio tn there land is on the French broad it really nice there 45 min to asheville and 25min to Newport tn

There is a turbo facility near the airport. I want to say it is Borg-Warner but don't quote me on that.

I like the mountains too but land up there is insane expensive. My wife grew up in Waynesville and we get up there once a year or so. Most of the economy seems to revolve around tourism.

Maybe @Jody Treadway is looking for an apprentice.

Best chance of a job in your field probably would be at Eaton, Borg Warner, or Continental Teves. As for housing anywhere from Waynesville to Hendersonville.

Someones brother or husband I know works for BW, I'm racking my brain and can't think of who it is. Damn getting old sucks, lol.

It really depends on what kind of engineering you want to do. There is all sorts of crap in the general area. Fletcher has Continental-Teves, Meritor, Wilsonart, Diamond Brand, Sierra Nevada Brewing, etc. Arden has Eaton, Hubbell, MinuteKey, Linamar, Duke Energy's Coal plant, etc. Avery Creek has Borg-Warner. Going north towards Asheville is Amcor, Unison, and a few smaller manufacturers. Going south is a GE lighting plant, and International Paper packaging plant. Hendersonville has Kimberly-Clark and Kyocera Precicion Tools and a lot of other smaller firms.

Mills River / Henderson County are also currently serenading a joint venture that involves Linamar and another Company that, if it happens, will have a fair amount of manufacturing jobs.

as far as design firms, if you wanted to go that way, one of the largest civil firms in the state is HQ in Asheville - McGill Associates (they have ME, EE, CE all in house)

Plus out in Waynesville there is RN&M another multi disciplined design firm.

What about taxes and freedom infringement in the various counties? Is one better than another? I assume Buncombe is the worst since it holds the home base.

My FIL is an engineer at Borg Warner. They actually have 2 facilities in town. He seems to be very happy there. I can ask him for a more detailed response, but I'd say there are plenty of opportunities for an engineer around Asheville. They also have 10+ acres for sale in Madison Co. right off I-26 at the Wolf Laurel exit.

You're correct about Buncombe Co having highest taxes and stuff.

Taxes are pretty stupid high in Buncombe County. We moved to Henderson County and nearly cut our taxes in half.
Mills River, Arden, Fletcher, Hendersonville all have multiple manufacturing facilities. Look into Pisgah Forest and Brevard for cities 1/2 hour away from Asheville but with amenities for everyday life. All of the aforementioned towns will allow you to locate to Henderson or Transylvania counties and save on taxes.

It's a great area to live in around here. This is where we'll be for good no question about it.
If I can get you any info, just ask.

Marion has Baxter and Baldor..maybe some others I cant remember. Technically the foothills, but only 35 mins up the mountain to Asheville. Lake James is close if you have a boat/jet skis. Super Walmart and a couple other decent grocery stores. Good place to raise a family. I wouldn't think twice about moving back.

In a similar boat, finishing school next spring for my BSMET and would much rather live in the mountains than here in the Charlotte area.

I think the only thing they engineer in Asheville is homos and hippies
actually those have moved in on those of us actually from wnc.

I framed the balcrank plant. Also worked on baldor near wodfin. Thermofisher is in woodfin as well. Right now we are building 57000 plus square ft for avl technologies. About 5 years ago they bought an entire shopping center for their facility. Now 5 years later we are there again. Even did a small addition about 3 yrs ago. They build satellites Including alot for military. Lots of stuff around here. wnc is a nice place to be but I stay out of asheville unless im working.

What are your thoughts on Morganton? From all I've heard, it's very tough in actual Asheville to land an M.E. job but there are a fair amount of openings that I know of down here--wages will be lower than a job in Charlotte but so is the cost of living by a fair amount.

I made a couple fork lift delivers to a Parts Supplier, years ago. Seemed like it was somewhere in the Flat Rock-Arden area, off I-26. It seemed comparable to Jeegs, but was generic.
Even at that time, I think there was no Name showing. looked like a Cool job, to work at a Parts Warehouse! Any body know what I'm referring to?

BTW, could LinkedIn, help with you job search?
