Mike Heath, the president of True Patriot Inc. and I are good friends. Friday the 6th of August I asked him if he wanted to do lunch the upcoming week and his reply was “only if you want to fly to wherever I’ll be.” I asked what he meant by that and after talking a little more I realized he needa battle buddy for what he had planned. Mike was going to be living out of a 5x8 utility trailer and heading out west for 3.5 weeks. He had a unused roof top tent that I would be allowed to sleep in and room in the passenger seat for me. Two days later we left on a epic “overland” adventure.

Sunday evening I met Mike at Rockfish Winery in Raeford during the Rigs and Wine event. We talked to some other veterans for a while and got a late start (around 9:30 pm) we drove to Riverbend and spent the night. The next morning we drove to @Jason W. and @josh$$ for them to do some maintenance work on Grunt (Mikes Jeep) as well as install a window into the trailer. After a few hours of great conversations we were off to a campground in Cosby Tennessee. This campground was a methlab breeding ground but I have to say one of the nicest bathrooms of any campground I have seen.

The next morning we drove to Sevierville TN to look at a property that Mike had been looking at to purchase. After we realized the property wouldn’t work for what he was thinking, we went and made a stop at Highland expedition outfitters. We stayed there for about an hour before we hit the road. We drove to Chattanooga and stopped to get dinner. We ate at a place called Fatboys roadside eats. I highly recommend this place. I ate a burrito that makes Chipotle burritos look small. My burrito had shredded pork, shredded chicken, tater tots, Mac n cheese, bbq sauce, and Buffalo sauce. We did not leave hungry but just to make sure we ordered apple pie egg rolls. After our bellies were full, we drove to Tuscaloosa Alabama. We spent the night in Deerlick state park and the park stood up to its name. Driving out the following morning we saw several deer along the road.

We set the GPS for Texas and drove to South Holiday Park just outside of Fort Worth Texas. Nothing really exciting happened during this part of the trip except we both had Whataburger for the first time. It was ok but not great.

The next day we drove to Mike’s fathers house just outside Phoenix Arizona. We stayed three days at Mikes dads house and visited. During this time we dropped off a dog to be trained as a service animal. Mike also realized that 8mpg while towing a trailer wasn’t any fun and so we left the trailer.

Yesterday morning we left Phoenix and drove to Flagstaff Arizona. We went to the visitor center, and then set our GPS to Sunset crater volcano and Wupatki national parks. There we saw lava flows and 800 year old Pueblo houses. We spent a few hours at these parks before heading to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. We got to the North Rim around 8:45pm to watch a lightning storm on the other side of the Grand Canyon. It was really cool. Last night we slept in the Kaibab national forest about 4 miles from the North Rim.

This morning we woke up and went back to the North Rim to see it in the daytime. We then set GPS to Zion National Park where we are now. Later today we will head to Bryce Canyon and Capital Rim before we find a place to stay.

Future stops to come:
Cody Wyoming for Jeep Jamboree on the Morison Jeep trails, Yellowstone(possibility),
Mount Rushmore,
Badlands,
Sturgis,
Deadwood,
Grand Tetons,
And anything else we want to see along the way.

Yesterday afternoon we got Bryce Canyon. As with this whole trip, it was beautiful. Last night we stayed at Otter Creek state park. The plan was to camp out on some BLM lands but we came across this state park and it was cheap and had HOT showers. We set up and cooked dinner and had a relaxing evening next to Otter lake.

This morning we woke up to the sounds of coyotes off in the distance. We packed up, made some coffee, and hit the road. The drive has been pretty boring today. We stopped in Evanston’s Wyoming at Walmart to restock on grocery’s. While there, we met a guy with a JK on 40’s and tons that worked for the Special Forces Foundation. We sat in the parking lot and talked to him for about an hour. We then hit the road again. Plan for tonight is to make it to Jackson Wyoming to camp. Tomorrow will be a little part of Tetons and Yellowstone as we make our way over to Cody Wyoming. We will circle back after Jeep Jamboree USA

Tuesday night we had planned to stop at Jackson Wyoming, but we decided to keep going. We looked on the map and found a camp ground at the base of the Tetons called Jenny Lake. On the way to Jenny Lake we stopped to get gas and talked to a park ranger who informed us we had to have reservations and there was no dispersed camping in the Tetons. We got online and found out Jenny Lake had 1 site left so we booked it. Driving to the campground we realize the view would be awesome but we had fog and smoke and rain blocking our view. We set up camp and decided to take a walk. While walking the camp host pulled up next to us on his golf cart. He was from Alabama, so after a few minutes talking about the Crimson Tide, he drove off. We continued to walk to the lake and in the process we found a trail. while walking on the trail we found three deer probably 10 to 15 feet off the path. They weren’t spooked by us and we got some pretty good pictures of them. We made our way back to camp to eat and go to sleep.

The next morning we woke up and packed, while packing up we heard a noise behind us and there were two bucks, again not 10 feet from where we were. Same thing as before they did not spook and we got pictures of them. We continued our drive towards Yellowstone. While driving Mike slammed on the brakes and said he just saw elk. We walked back but they did not stay for us to take pictures. As we walked back to the jeep, we were able to hear them calling to each other. We continued to drive to Old Faithful, but we had just missed the geyser. The next one was approximately 50 minutes give or take 20 until eruption. I did not want to sit and wait in the rain, so we continued our trip on. we took the long way around so we could see more of Yellowstone before heading to Cody Wyoming. As we were getting ready to leave the park, we saw several bison crossing the road. we made it into Cody Wyoming and realized we needed warm gear and bear spray for the rest of this trip . After hitting up a few shops, we were ready to go to the meet and greet for Jeep jamboree. Mike and I met another veteran that had a nonprofit like True Patriot Inc. This veterans nonprofit was Military Mobility. He asked us where we were spending the night. Our reply was to camp on BLM lands. He told us that was unacceptable and that we were going to spend the night at his house. The next morning, we got ready to meet everybody to go do the Morrison Jeep trails. If you don’t know, the Morrison Jeep trail starts off with 22 switchbacks up a almost vertical cliff wall. From the Morrison Jeep trail we moved on to Beartooth trail. We all found a clearing and stopped to camp. Now at this point I should mention that I thought this trip was going to be warm. I brought a summer sleeping bag. Well it was windy and cold. At four in the morning I moved into the jeep and slept resting my head on the steering wheel because I was frozen. When we woke up it was snowing. Because everyone was so cold we left camp almost a hour early so we all could use the heat from our Jeep’s to warm up. From there we went on to top of the world. Which is a convenient store which is at 10,900 feet above sea level. After leaving top of the world, we moved onto lulu Pass where we found a place to camp. Camp was someplace straight out of a horror movie. It had every element, a creepy old cabin, abandoned hammocks, random tents all around with nobody around. It was creepy. Camp was next to a lake at the base of the mountain that had cool views but again look like something out of a horror movie. Some people made camp, others went up to goose Lake. On the way to goose lake we had a drone that went haywire. We waited for the drones battery to die so it would return to base. On its return the pilot realized it was not gonna land where it was launch from. Mike Heath and Sean Gulich grabbed a jacket to try to catch the drone. I wish I had a video of this, because it was hilarious, they thought they were going to get knocked in the head by the propeller blades. From there, we went on up to goose lake. You could get close but had to do a 1/8 mile hike up to see it. Those of us that went to goose lake headed back to camp. We set up Mikes cot and the tent. Mike then made us some awesome shrimp and peppers and tomatoes that smelled delicious, but as he picked them up to serve them they all fell on the ground. After picking them up so we wouldn’t have a bear visit us, we ended up eating cold meat sandwiches. After that we called it a night. I figured out how to sleep warm. We woke up to frost all over everything and got ready to continue our next leg. We rode a few more trails before heading into Cook City Montana. We used the welcome centers WiFi check our phones. Instead of continuing with Jeep jamboree USA for the last night of camping, we decided to go ahead and continue our parks tour. We got a head start towards devils tower. We made it about 3:30 hours before we stopped at a campground. We took showers and set up camp. The campground had a ice cream social so since we are fat kids we had to go get ice cream. We woke up this morning and realized we were only about 15 minutes from little big horn so we went there first. With all the tombstones mike and I felt it was disrespectful to be taking pictures. We then drove to devils tower. it wasn’t very impressive to us in comparison to everything else we have seen on this trip. so we got close enough to see it and then continued driving toward deadwood.

Awesome trip! I'm excited to see the rest, thanks for sharing!

For reference, we spent five days at Yellowstone and drove 550 miles inside the Park. Planned on a day trip to Grand Tetons but it didn't happen. We saw Sturgis, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Wall Drug, and the Badlands in a day.

Add a stop at Devils Tower on your way to SD.

Theodore Roosevelt NP is like the Badlands but has the Little Missouri River, so it's prettier.

Thank you! We will try to implement these stops and changes into our trip.

Wow!! What an epic trip, and totally on a whim? That makes it even better!

I have spoken to Mike several times over the last few years and while I’m sure he doesn’t remember me and wouldn’t know me if I walked up and slapped him, I have thought right much of him over the years. Great guy.

Y’all have a blast, be safe, and keep us updated. Thanks for sharing!!
