Does anyone have any experience with portable AC units? I was thinking this might be a viable option for the summer time when the power goes out, by hooking it up to the generator. Looking for any information.

Really depends on what size room your trying to cool. 12,000 btu in a ton. Most homes up to 1500 square ft only have 2 tons of ac. How big of a generator you have would dictate how big of an ac you could use. Once you get up in the sizes you might as well just run your regular ac unit.

Ive got one like the one below, it's a 110 unit and will cool a good size room with a vaulted ceiling. I bought it off CL for 150 and use it in my garage often on hot days. I think it pulls right at 12-15 amps. It's kicked the breaker a couple of times....

Some of them require a drain while others use the water to cool them some way. They are kinda loud and have to be vented out a window. If you have window that opens l-r instead of up and down the vent adapter things don't work so good.We had one in a enclosed trailer once and it worked pretty good.

I have this exact same one. Not perfect, but I got it cheap and it's come in handy. When I was welding out of my small 2 car attached, it would take the edge off, but it never got Chilly. You can use it with or without a drain line. Theoretically, it evaporates the condensation and sends it out the vent. I pulled the plug a couple years ago, and it produces a lot of water. I let it drain. Not too loud, but they take up a lot of floor space. For the money, I'd buy 2 8k window units.

I would just buy a window A/C unit.

Thanks guys.

I considered a window unit and have had several in the past, but for this purpose I am thinking about something I can keep in the garage and roll into the house when needed, versus having a window unit taking up a window for a long period of time when I don't need it.
