I can't find the thread to cover this, so I'll start mine. I've sold many things on MP, including the 360, this past week, with No Problem. I've had many "Clicks" & 5 -6 inquires on the 304 I have posted. Last Monday, I believe, this "Joshua Clark" guy from Georgia, contacts me. He decides he wants the 304. States he will be coming my way today [12/26], on his way to Tennessee, & can pick it up then. Over the next day, we swap a couple more messages, & he ask if he can pay or do a deposit on it. I asked if he has Pay Pal? He does, so I send my email address to him, & we have struck a deal on the engine & flywheel. Couple more days go by, & I receive nothing. I keep waiting, until this morning, then messaged him & asked If he was coming today? He asked me to Text him, at 470-209-9878. I thought That was Odd, but did, asking the same thing again. I explained I'd be in & out a few times, & just needed a time from him. [He's never asked for my address. All he knows is my city] He said "were'' leaving out at 11, & expect to be near me by 2pm". I thought that was kind of fast, but whatever. [This was at 10:20 am.] At 2:49 pm, I texted "How you doing"? And at 3:02 pm, "WHERE ARE YOU"? I Also posted the Same question on his FB Messenger. 3:07 pm, he text he's "at the Georgia line". I got Played; Screwed; And Don't like it! I looked up the number & it is from Stone Mtn. Georgia. I can't confirm his name with out paying one of those Scamming "Free" search companies. but it Seems to be his number, or anyway, Someone is replying to it. I can't get in his FB account, since I'm not a Friend. I'll look to see if I can Report him to FB ? But wonder, how many NC4x4 members would like to text him through out the night?
I know similar things have been done before, but I didn't find the thread. Thanks, in Advance!

That's like 50% of FB and CL experiences ain't it?

Hell I've got people that have been "on the way" for stuff I was giving away for damn near a year now. Guess they got lost, too bad for them the next person "on the way" actually made it lol.

Sadly, that is a very normal thing these days.

Yes, it's all true & sad; I know. But a first for me on MP. Craig's List, it was common. It's just the way this ass seemed to want it so bad! I told him a Lenoir guy had called, but backed out. He replied Good, He needs it. And waiting until his "so-called" trip, seemed honest, with the holidays on-going. But,,,,It did seem odd when he wanted to pre-pay, & never did. I Really thought he was coming! Wasn't a big deal that I moved my Jeep out of the way, rolled the engine out of a corner & set up the engine hoist. It was More the Wait, & Wait, & Then, realize he was a Lying Scum Bag! There was/is a place to report the buyer, & you can choose several reasons Why your reporting him. FB says they keep a Record of that. For whatever good that does. I remember someone else got Wronged, on here, & the Forum jumped allover the person or business! Maybe it was something between Members.

What was odd to me was that he was going from GA to TN but was going to be near Mt Holly, and wanted to pick up the engine on his way there instead of on the way back. But I have seen people do dumber things.

Maybe I've just gotten extremely lucky, but I've never had a bad experience on CL. I gave MP a whirl once or twice and it never worked out. Every single part on my Jeep was bought off either CL or here, and is the reason I could never sell it. I'd never find deals like that again.
Complete 5.3 LS- $150 (CL)
Complete 435+205 - $150 (CL)
Complete 99-04 60 - $400 (here)
Complete 99-04 Sterling - $100 (CL)
95 YJ tub/frame -trade (here)
MP.... ain't nobody got time fo dat.

seems pretty normal. had a guy want to look at my truck setup a meeting didnt show, but let me know ahead of time. made a new plan didnt show. drove it to work for him to look at he never showed. so i removed myself for the messages. a week goes by and he says he wants to look at truck i told him its not for sale to him. and then the guy got mad at me lol

You ain't lying. I've sold a lot on there lately moreso than buy. The limited traffic on there does help make the good deals stand out better though. And it's typically the older crowd that still browses it.

I keep hoping the stupidity of FB marketplace search will drive the intelligent people back to CL.

For me…I’ve always had the best luck buying from forums. CL always seemed to be spammers for me and I can never seem to get a response from sellers on FB. Selling though…Facebook groups have always been my golden goose. List something in specific groups that you know will pay more…a D44 the jeep guys always pay way more than the ford guys…73-79 crew cab stuff, post in a crew cab specific group because those guys know how tough to find their specific parts are…and it always tends to be a broader audience since marketplace defaults to a search radius.

I am only a CL user. I have bought several machines from CL and all the transactions went well. I have only sold one item on CL and I had the usual low ballers call and text, but in the end sold it to a nice gentleman in TN.
I think your positive experiences are because of what items you are buying. Every interaction I've ever had while buying tractors and implements and other ag related items has been great. Items that appeal to more.of the general populist, much more hit or miss.

This has been my observation too. When I sell stuff to people who are into niche stuff like old machine tools, we tend to be like minded.

Weirdest one I ever had was selling a cuckoo clock on Craigslist about 10 years ago. Guy was a nutcase. But who else would buy cuckoo clocks on Craigslist 🤷‍♂️

Sorry you got stood up but welcome to my world. The secret to selling on market place is to think they are all liars.are full of shit and arent coming,Go on about your buisness and be pleasantly surprised when they show. I hauled a set of steering Rockwells to Hi-point to meet a guy back in about 01-02 w just a phone # in my hand.Dude never showed. That was a long /hot trip in a slow truck w no a/c

I don’t care who is “on their way” I tell everyone, first to show up with cash gets it and I count on at least 50% to no show. Those are your modern day tire kickers.
I mostly agree but if you say your coming and will be there by X o'clock Im gonna hold it that long.As somebody who drives alot and often long distances to get thing I would want the same courtesy. If they aren't willing to hold it a few hours till I can get there its a deal breaker for me.

I'm generally "fist come, first served", but I didn't have any other prospects, during the week. And we had messaged several time & even swapped Jeep pictures. Though that could have been fake too. But why else would he be looking at my engine add. Moving on! I had a couple more "maybe" interested parties, today. As long as I'm getting Hits, it's Good! Someone will get it. If you just wanted something for a Hunting Jeep, or trail Jeep, heck, Run this motor as is! Even the clutch assembly, looks new.

Again I mostly agree but there's a line there. You can't ask market price for something on a board where it would a common item.Thats the reason I rarely post anything for sale here.I can get way better money on Ebay for it if its shippable.

Yes, I’m not THAT much of an asshole. If you’re coming a long way, I’ll take considerations and tell others that someone is coming from a long distance. But my process of first to show up with cash seems to weed out the tire kickers and gets me a sale on the first to show up.

I find that marketplace is a pain in the ass to search and I also hate the quick buttons for folks to ask if it's available. I really miss craigs being the main venue. I do think the scammers have moved to marketplace though, so it has made craigs more desireable.

I posted the engine on CL today. Within 2 hours, I had a guy, from SC, wanting it at my asking price. He says he is traveling to Hickory in the morning, to buy something. Then he will come to me on his way back. Driving a Suburban, pulling a trailer for the engine. We have swapped phone numbers for texting. We'll see how that works out. In the mean time, another guy on FB, hit the Is It Available button. I replied with the Yes button. End of that! Another guy has inquired probably 3 times with questions, like how many miles on it. Don't know what's up with him. Just like another member on here, that's acting as a go between with his friend. I don't look for that to pan out. Been too long & drawn out. Anyone around Hickory anyone in the AM? lol
