help a gal out,

extinguisher-what do I get (and I assume at this point I need 2 extinguishers right?), should I get the holder that goes on the roll back bar (sorry if that isn't what its called)..and what would hold the second one near the front?..and is this something that should always be kept in the jeep, or something that I need to remove when its parked in the driveway?

cb radios--- yeah new, help overwhelmed..lol..

oh and first aid kits...im actually good on that (former emt and my husband is a nurse)

Place a 1lb or larger Fire extinguisher within reach of the drivers seat and never hurts to have another at the rear as long as you can get to it quickly. As far as a CB you’re opening a big can of worms with all the options but I run a Bearcat 880 with a Firestik antenna and Firestik coax.

Make sure you use an ABC rated extinguisher. 2.5lb would be my recommendation, within reach of drivers seat and one at the rear of the rig somewhere. The Amerex brand I sell comes with a bracket that holds well but on my side by side I used a Drake off road mount off amazon. Around $50 but works excellent.

No input on a CB....never used one.

Look at the sodium bicarbonate extinguishers. A 1# monoammonium phosphate extinguisher won't do much on a gasoline fire.

Bearcat 880, fire stick. 70% of the club runs similar configuration. A couple of folks have their license and can talk to Europe, but I've only experienced lack of cell coverage at Potts, before I got a burner phone for $25 just for that trip

1lb in the rear, 2.5lb mounted on cage between the seats

First aid behind the seat

What I have learned about c.b. radios is the antenna means more than the radio. A 4 foot fire stick tuned should be all you need.

Get an Amerex. I'm loyal because one of my first jobs was building/testing the two automated assembly lines for Amerex more than 20 years ago.

I have only needed a fire extinguisher once. About a year ago my son was testing my truck’s transmission on a dirt mound. Steve and I were standing nearby on the passenger side. The transmission overheated and blew fluid out the dip stick onto the exhaust header where it burst into flames. There was an extinguisher on the floor between the seats, one out back on the bed, and one on the passenger side “A” piller. I reached in the open window, ripped out the extinguisher and put out the fire. I sustained no damage to the wiring harness and only had to clean up a minor mess. I keep three extinguishers on board in my new buggy. I also have one in each of my work trucks

As far as CB, a Cobera 29 is not a bad way to go. Kinda large footprint but this is where creativity comes to play. How far do you want to talk? Antenna is everything. Up and down the trail: 3 foot firestick. A few miles on the road: 1/4 wave whip. Be warned. The whip is like 102-109”. I run a cobera 29 Ltd chrome and a 1/4 wave whip and can talk about 10-12 miles. Also, check and tune your antenna with an SWR meter. Anything under 1.5:1 is fine. The lower the better.

Explanation?? Sodium Bicarb 1lb extinguisher carries a UL listing of 2BC which means in UL testing it puts out 2 "units" of class B or C fire. A 2.5lb ABC (monoammonium phosphate) extinguisher carries a 1A:10BC UL rating. The same size (2.5lb) Sodium Bicarb carries just a 10BC rating. Why would you only carry a BC rated extinguisher when an ABC carries additional protection coverage and in the same size for less money? The smart thing IMO is to run with a 5lb ABC which carries a 3A:40BC rating. A 2.5BC extinguisher won't put out a grass fire and who wants to be responsible for a forest fire because they couldn't put the fire out on their rig.

You've never wheeled with Randy Sloan have you

We had about 10 extinguishers there in less than a minute. There were so many people going to help, I couldn't get my doors open, so I was just handing out my fire extinguishers haha.

So I have a 1 pound right in between the passenger and driver, and then a 5 pound one mounted at the rear on the roll cage so anyone can grab it easily and quickly.

For location, as many others have said, you want one that you can reach from the drivers seat while still strapped in. Ideally you'd have a second one that can be reached by someone from outside of the vehicle. Too often you'll see rear mounted fire extinguishers in Jeeps attached to the roll cage under the hard top or soft top. This is a good location without the top on but once you put the top up, you've now blocked access, or at least quick access, to it. Many race organizations require two 2.5 lb ABC extinguishers so I would go with that size and rating at a minimum.
