Firearms on trail rides.

here is for starters. this says you can carry concealed.
I'll get more info on the .22 rules. in a sec.
What is URE though?

Federal parks say we do whatever the state allows in state parks.

Until 12/1/11, you can't carry cocealed in a state park. So my understanding is you can't carry concealed at URE.

Then you get the hunting thing and it gets confusing.

I'm with a couple of these other guys though. I may or not be concealing, but your best bet is to assume I am unless I have a drink in my hand.

I agree.

National parks should not be confused with national forests. In North Carolina, the Nantahala, Pisgah, Uwharrie and Croatan national forests are also designated as game lands.

“Concealed carry permits do not supersede the other regulations that apply,” said Maj. Keith Templeton, with the Law Enforcement Division of the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission. “It is up to the individual with a valid concealed carry permit to know the law and obey it.”

Under game land regulations, it is unlawful to possess a firearm or bow and arrow on a game land at any time, except:

•During the open hunting seasons for game birds and game animals
•When the firearm is cased or not immediately available for use
•When possessed and used by participants in field trials on field trial areas
•When possessed and used on target shooting areas designated by the landowner
•When possessed in designated camping areas for defense of persons and property
Game land regulations allow .22 caliber pistols, with barrels not greater than seven and a half inches in length and shooting only short, long or long rifle ammunition, to be carried as a sidearm on game lands at any time, other than by hunters during the special bow and arrow and muzzleloading deer hunting seasons.

My XD45 is always on my person or in my trail rig or other vehicles I drive unless I'm @ home but it's still close by.

My 12g goes with me on every trail ride, I think its fine unless ya inmature and dont know how to keep it in ya rig!!! other than that i see no problem in it but once again thats my O...

The new omnibus gun law allows for concealed carry on state owned hunting lands. That's kind of misleading if you ask me, the NC Wildlife Resources Commission manages the federal land, they don't technically own it. I don't get it, I guess I didn't realize the state owned any hunting land. I was hoping the new game lands regulations manual would have something related to the new law and concealed carry, but no luck, it still has the info others posted previously...

That being said, I try to stick to the "readily accessible" part of the law. I have gotten a firearms ticket on Game Lands before, the officer said if I would just lock it in the center console in my YJ I would be fine, because it wouldn't be easy to get at. if I didn't have a locking console, I think I would keep the pistol stowed in a backpack or something out of reach from the driver's seat. At some point, all this carefully placing the pistol kind of defeats the purpose of carrying...

Don't cut off the Manche in a race...or in the woods.:flipoff2:

I carry frequently when on trails. Hiking, wheeling, anytime Im outdoors. We have bears literally in our backyard most days. We border the Pisgah Natl Forest and are surrounded by about 1600 acres of game lands in a bear sanctuary. That'll make ya pack heat 24/7.

yeah dumbass. i was trying to back you up on that.

How about this OC?

If you see me on the trail, stop me and introduce yoruself. Remind me you're the guy that called me a dumbass. Maybe by then I'll have forgotten about this and we'll laugh about it. Maybe not.

My Jeep TJ is Electric Lime Green. You can't miss it.

Chris

It is really no ones business what I carry in my Jeep or at any other time...

Amen... I started to comment on this yesterday evening, but then opted to stay out of it. It is my opinion that if this thread goes any further it should be moved to the garage. What and when I carry is my business... no one else's.

It SHOULDN'T be anyone else's business, but the government has made sure it is their business whether you like that or not.

I checked both shoulders and they appear to clean and clear. We seemed to have gotten off on the wrong foot. Maybe it was when you called me a dumbass. Either way, I apologize if I offended you before or after that.
Have a nice day.

no offense taken

I read a document once that told me I had the right to bare arms. I can't remember any restrictions being listed.

Yeah it also says you're also allowed to be secure in your person, house, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures.

so unless someone has a reason to search your person, they won't know what is on your person.

URE IS NOT A PARK! US Park Service is under by the Dept of Interior. US Forest Service is under by the Dept of Agriculture. You will see on all the signs UWHARRIE NATIONAL FOREST. Look on your trail pass. USFS lands are managed for multiple use, thats why you cant hunt or ride OHV trails in the parks, and the parks will NOT allow firearms with some exceptions like having to pass thru a park to get to areas where hunting is permitted and it better be unloaded and out of reach. Wildlife, Fish & Game or what ever each state calls them do NOT manage the land, it is US Government property. BUT the wildlife on the US Government property is considered the property of the states and managed by the state agencies. If it's hunting season and you have a hunting license you can pretty much carry around what ever you want if it is a legal hunting firearm. If you are caught walking about the woods outside of hunting season with a high powered rifle you WILL likely get arrested for poaching and have your rifle confiscated. You can carry concealed if you have the proper CCW, you can carry openly... The .22 rule applies to both in NC. Because the wildlife is the property of the State, the governing agency can and does determine the game land rules which includes firearms and the manner in which game is taken. If you are trail riding in URE you are on game lands. The .22 rule applies. If you are traviling the gravel road to the shooting range you are on a road under jurisdiction of the county going to a designated shooting range, you are not on game land. However if you are traveling the road with a loaded firearm at night with a spotlight... looks like poaching, acts like poaching, you get it. If you are trail riding or camping and you have your .357 locked away and give no probable cause for law enforcement to be concerned then that's your choice and most likely will have no problems. If you get caught walking outside of camp or in the woods in general at night with a spotlight and your .357 you WILL have your gun confiscated, you will likely be charged and may or may not spend the rest of the night in jail for poaching.
That is the rule that is followed by a majority of the eastern National Forests. They are not totally bound by the state rules and regulations but do so as much as a courtesy to the host state and alleviates a lot of confusion. Out west I always carried my 9mm openly in the NFs in the presence of everyone with a patch or a badge. It was acceptable in those states.

I carry all the time on me or in the vehicle. But if you are using bad animals as a reason then something like a 410 pistol would be best and all you need. And remember self defence is only good if you have no other choice and can not leave the area. So not walking away when you can make you a active person in the situation.
