Flight to Bruges

So, it has been my dream for a while to go and visit Bruges, Belgium. The wife and I said that we would start saving little by little to try and go next year. I was checking flights and they aren't that bad. about $850 a person, round trip.
Now, I have a fear of flying...but I know that they only way to go there is by jumping on a plane. Most of the flights I see have at least one stop. I feel that if I could avoid that and just have a non stop flight, it would be better for me..I could load up on some sleeping pills and hopefully knock myself out for the entire duration of the flight which is about 7 hours.
I am scared of flying because I am afriad of heights, not being in control, and engine failure, and falling from the sky to my death. I know that statistically chances are very low, but with all the stuff that has been goin on with planes lately...its made me more weary.

Is it better "statistically" to have multiple stops on a flight or just making one long trip....the longest I have ever flown was about 2.5 hours. I flew to NYC 2 years ago and I was a wreck....and it was only a 50 min flight.

Anyone go on planes but scared to death of them? Any sure fire way I could be knocked out for 5-6 hours?
I really don't want to let my fear keep me from going to a place I have always wanted to go.

They serve alcohol on long flights works well for me. Take a few shots before I get to the airport and a few drinks on the plane, pretend your on a school bus. Just don't throw anything at the driver...

I need something that will just knock me out. I have taken Lorazepam and they really make me sleepy but not enough to be calm on a flight.
I always said, I wish I could bring an Anesthesiologist with me and just sleep through the whole ordeal.

On a flight that long your going to have a touch screen on the back of the headrest to keep you occupied. Play movies, games and tv shows if you can't fall asleep. The only scary parts are takeoff and landing.

But like others have said, get a good buzz going b4 you get on the plane.

Landings are my favorite...once I can see cars, I am good. I just don't like take offs or being in the air at all.

You can always take a LONG vacation and jump aboard the QE2. That's what my aunt does. She's terrified of flying as well. So she plans ahead and takes a boat. She's taken the QE2 as well as cargo ships.

As for flying, well it doesn't bother me a bit. I grew up in Europe and have flown across the Atlantic countless times. Actually getting ready to go back in March with the whole family.

For me, all it would take is a good dose of benedryll and I'd be OUT. Some people it makes hyper. It knocks me out cold.

Get some benedryll and see what it does to you.

A few things worth noting...

- Unless you fly El Cheapo Air, it will be a big plane, like an A330, 787 or something. seating will be at least a center aisle of 3, probably 4 and side rows of at least 2. If you're in the middle you won't even see out the windows.
- I'm betting the plane you took to NY was a LOT smaller. The "feel " of this is totally different. The big planes is not the "loud as hell tin can w/ an engine" kind of experience.
- The plane will have an LCD screen in teh seat rest in front of you. Plenty of TV etc to keep you occupied - but take a tablet and watch lots of wheelin' videos.
- Chances are the flight out will be overnight anyway
- You can take your own booze. Lots of it... just buy several of the $1 "airplane bottles" at the ABC store. Bring 'em in a ziplock and separate at security check in. Did it out to CA and back this week :D .
- Consider driving a little ways to expand chancs of a direct flight (e.g., CLT, RDU)
- start working the "mile high club" into conversation w/ your wife now...

very true.

suddenly I'm feeling flying anxiety....

I'm no expert but when was the last time you heard of a trans Atlantic planecrash? I assume the aircraft that cross oceans are inspected and maintaned to a higher standard and are safer than land bound flights, cause they can't just set down at a nearby runway if a problem occurs in flight like they can flying over land. I recommend Valium? and a shot or 2 to calm your nerves o_O;)

I have these same problems.

Alcohal , and positive thinking.

Im not a drinker , but i cant use my choice of medication on a plane, so drinking doesnt do it for me. I just freak out the whole time an it always ends up fine. benedyrl makes me pass out imma have to.try it next time

If that choice of meds is of an herbal nature, might consider ingestion of some nice juicy brownies right before walking through security. Should be set right about takeoff time...

I'm the opposite. I hate landing since I'm not in control. I wish there was a way to just continuously takeoff, I love the rush. Any dumbo can give it full throttle and transition from hard surface to soft surface, but it takes more skill to transition from soft to hard and slow the plane down all while keeping it straight and not landing too early or too late on the runway.

That's what scares me...seems like one is due anytime now. Flying over an entire ocean just doesn't sit well with me, although I guess if I'm all drugged up, I won't know the difference anyways.

really?

The army gave my wife ambien for the 11 hour flight back from Afghanistan.call your doctor tell him about your situation maybe he will be able to assist you.on the other hand the army gave me valium for eye surgery if it can relax me to the point a man can cut the lens off my eye while awake it should do for a little old airplane ride.I love flying I even enjoy jumping out of planes while in flight upon occasion

I just got back from Germany a few weeks ago on a 767. I would suggest driving to the closest large airport where you can get a non-stop flight, then cowboy up. I don't get into the knock-myself-out mentaility because if something were to actually happen (very small chance), then I want a clear head. Just take lots of stuff to keep you occupied. Watch the movies, take a tablet, a book, magazines, and ear plugs. Take something to eat because the airplane food sucks. Always get the vegetarian dish (usually pasta) because it sucks slightly less than that stuff they give you labeled 'chicken'. My wife has the same irrational fear of flying and it really makes it stressful for my daughter and I to fly anywhere with her.

I think the closest non stop aitport from here is Dulles in D.C....
The ambien idea is really good. If I could sleep for 5 hours or so...I think id be ok.

Why do you need to fly into Bruges?
Rather than having a hike on this side, could instead fly into Bruseels or Antwerp or Dunkirk and take a train in or rent car etc.
Excuse for a fun trip.

If you have the time, fly into Amsterdam and take the train. It's not bit about 4-5 hr train and like Ratty said, enjoy the trip. The rail systems in Europe are AWESOME, and you can get another country under your belt. Schipol airport in Amsterdam is one of the busiest in Europe and you're bound to find a flight out of Charlotte.

I really dislike flying, but I will always prefer trans Atlantic flights over continental. The planes are so big, you don't even know you're flying.
