Florida Getaway

We went to Destin a few years back and ended up spending more time at Miramar beach. I have been itching to get back to Florida, but the drive is what turns me away from going anytime soon, I really want to visit the keys, but I LOATHE flying.
Destin Beach is the jam. Plus there's the sweet three level go kart track. The wife and I went there a bunch when we lived in New Orleans.

We made it to Marathon!

I want to add this here so if anyone looks for things to do in the Keys this is a must IMHO.

USCGC Ingham floating Museum. If you have ever been to patriots point in Charleston it’s a lot like that but just one ship. Ship served in WWII and Vietnam. Very cool to see. Especially knowing my wife’s dad served in Squadron 1 with the Coast Guard in Vietnam and a ship like this was his last duty station.

Well let's sum this clusterfuck up.
Flew down so we could not lose a day traveling up and back. (I could have driven this in 8.5 hours, my bud has a house there and does it all the time)
Up on Wednesday morning at 5:30 to be at airport at 7 for 9:10 flight. All went as planned until we get to rental POS counter in Tampa and that line was over an hour!
Took us an hour to get to hotel plus ate lunch on the way and room wasnt ready so had to waste time to get in which was about 3pm..
Went straight to St Pete beach behind hotel and it was so fucking hot that we went back to room within an hour to nap. Didn't stir again until about 6:30 to go get dinner. Got dinner and came back and crashed.
Next day, big expectations, hit the beach in morning and go exploring. Called our friends and they came got us to show us around. Spent rest of day with them but wife was expecting more... (this was our tenth wedding anniversary trip a month early because we will be at the Jeepster Jam next month during the actual date)
Went out on their boat on Friday and had a good time on the waterway, (ocean was 4-6' seas),
COULD NOT FIND DINNER because this is COVID hell and tourist HELL! Florida is open but the damned restaurants are NOT!
Saturday was our explore day at this point and try as we may, NOTHING was available! Anything we were interested in was drastically changed due to COVID and we didnt have reservations or desire to do it. WE met our friends at a car show on the streets and it was pretty cool, and we did find a restaurant to feed us and a table overlooking some water.
General rant... Our Hotel Tradewinds/ Rumfish is top of the line but the main beach road, usually 4 lanes plus a center turn lane was closed down to 1 lane each way due to construction cones and pipeline construction but in 5 days we never saw a worker! This caused a minimum of 30-45 minute delay each time coming or going from resort.
Our rental car was a Nissan Pathfinder and it had a bad tire that WOMP, WOMP, WOMPED the entire time, torque steer that would send you either way depending on roads, intermittant backup camera that gave us false sense of...who fucking knows..., and a general let down to anyone who gives a shit about what they drive.
Flight home, same fucking nonsense, overcrowded plane, masks, assholes. Arrived at our house at almost 9 pm. Our friends towed their boat back home and was home by 6:30!

I tried...lol

Well let's sum this clusterfuck up.
I knew it would be a good story as soon as I saw this.

We haven't "vacationed" since the youngest went to college for all the reasons you listed.
Instead we invested in a waterfall we can enjoy every day. No regerts
