Just went through the car buying process for the wife and one of her top picks was a used JK Rubicon or a newish 14/15 JK Sport that we would build up. After visiting 7 different dealerships, I have to congratulate the industry on finally figuring out the most profitable piece of Car selling: bolt ons.

Dealerships are bolting on RC lift kits with wheels and tires and marking them up $9,999.99. To be fair, from time to time I saw a BDS lift or some Fox shocks, but between the 7 dealers in 3 different states, it was the same thing. I asked who pays $10k for a $500 lift and $1800 wheel/tire package and the sales reps and managers all said the same thing- they can't keep them on the lots. Lol. People come in and buy the jeep and finance the extra $10k into the car loan.

I saw the same thing with Rams and Chevy 2500's. $10k wheel/tire/lift packages. Anyone else want to get into the bolt on business?

That's cause people cant afford the $2500 out of pocket but can afford to just add the 10K to the bottom line.I gotta have that shit right now I cant wait and save my money for 6 months.Seems a lot of those types of buyers cant see past tomorrow.

This is nothing new. Several years ago when I was TJ shopping I saw the same thing. Local Jeep/Dodge dealer had a good looking tj out front with no price on it. I stopped to ask and about fainted when he said the price. When I questioned the price he gave me some line about that being a $4,000 lift. It had a 2" bb and no name 33s on steel wheels. I laughed at him and left...

There's a lot in town that specializes in buying high mileage jeeps and trucks at auction, installing lift/tire/lightbar packages, and selling them for 3 times what they're worth.

Same thing just south of Winston on 150

NC automotive. Usually has JKU's but he had a 2001 silver 60th anniversary TJ when I was looking. VERY clean, nice shape, 80k but wanted $15k for it. He didn't ruin it with a lift though, it was ALL stock

So what did you end up getting her? We are starting to look for a 4-door Rubi for my wife. Geez, asking price for a used 2014 with 20-30K miles is only about $2k less than asking price for a similarly equipped new one.

^^^ That's why I went ahead and bought a new one. Used were 1-2 years old, 20-30k miles, and within a couple grand of new.

If you are in the market for a Rubi, I'm happy to share what I have learned based on my hours of dealership sitting and pinging via text everyone I know with one lol-

You should look at 2013 or newer. Better engine, kinks worked out of 2012's.

Look into extended warranty- very reasonable on the JK: $2k for 4 years b2b

Look at the skids under neath.

All of the higher mileage ones had seats that felt worn out. Be aware.

About $900 to get aftermarket leather installed

Here's the best deal I found- it's 3 hours from Charlotte, not scratched up. You can add a 48 month 48000 warranty to it and be out the door for $29'sh to $30k. Bmw of Roanoke, VA:

Everything else we saw cost 15% or more similarly equipped.

We do paint matching and hydro-graphics for a couple dealership upfitters that do this type of work... I charge them the same as walk in or a slight volume discount, but some of the quotes they have told customers I gasped at. It is ridiculous what people will pay when it only adds a couple bucks a month to the payments.

I swear we saw one of those AEV company vehicles at Windrock....he had every bolt-on AEV product that was sold on the outside, along with roof rack, front douche bar, rear douche bar and dual side douche bars hanging off the roof rack

The Jeep probably weighed 1,200 lbs more than stock, LOL.
