I got this today for the next gen. of my jeep Need a little help maybe a link on specs & a good place to get gears

any help would be great thanks

somebody??

thanks this is what I needed

Throw the fawker as far as you can. Leave it where it lands.

Because they suck. They suck it long, and they suck it hard.

You can make one last, but it'll still cost you 2x as much $$ to put together as a 14b, and it'll still be a POS.

come on, tell us what you really think about them...:flipoff2:

O.K. don't hold back. Other than they cost a more to regear do you have any FACTS???

Fawking pinon nut POSs. And yes I have one as well. If it wasnt cheap and geared/locked I wouldnt have used it. Get a 14B, disc and lock it and worry about breaking something else.

they eat pinion bearings alot also iirc? i'm assuming that's a result of the crap nuts your referring to?

o.k. guys keep it coming I need more than that would lock tight not fix that problem??

pinion threads or nut thread? the gear should be 8620 thats pretty hard so maybe a hardened nut? I thought the forces acting on the pinion side deflection please correct me if i am wrong?

Pinion threads are too small. It pulls the threads, junking the whole R&P. You can't ever reuse gears. If you're working with all brand new parts and solid pinion spacers, it'll last longer... but still won't last.

Sooner or later it'll get loose, or the pinion bearings will brinnell, or the yoke seal will start pissing fluid (they all leak, just a question of how much), and you'll decide that you need to tear it down to fix it. You'll pull the yoke off, take one look at the pinion, and realize that the only parts you can reuse are the locker and the housing. And you'll throw the whole damn thing out in the yard, go buy a 14 bolt, and build the axle you should have built in the first place.

Go through the junkyard some time and check all the 10.25s and 10.50s out there. See if you can find one that doesn't have endplay on the pinion yoke. Visteon knew it was a problem... why else do you think that they changed up the parts every couple of years? Long yokes, short yokes, different bearings, a whole new R&P set, etc.

Search the tech and axle swap articles on fullsizebronco.com. Lots of guys on there have swapped the 10.25 for their 1/2 ton stuff and have addressed many of these issues.

O.K. I got this on a trade for some stuff I got for free I'll check out the bronco threads see what I can find the one I have is out of an 85 f350 & it has no end play thanks for all the advice & just for the record I like the 14 bolt myself but a freebe is worth foolin with

Jeff if you r looking to put it in a trail only Jeep you may be OK. I have seen many of them with 180K plus and still working fine.

this will be road worthy with 38" or 39" tires 40 @ the largest a 4.3 stock v6 tbi & a 12" strech on my old willy's I'm thinking the weight & power to strength will make it work O.K.

here is some specs on your 85 model
ring gear diameter :10.38
pinion shaft length: 10 1/8
pinion shaft spline count: 31
axleshaft spline count: 35
axle shaft diameter :1.5 at the splines
hypoid offset: 1.50
gear ratio range:3.08-7.17
brakes: drum
weak points: the spline length on the yoke and pinion is insufficient. this causes the yoke to wobble and move causing wear on the pinion bearings affecting preload.which leads to leakage through the splines and pinion seal. this will eventually cause pinion bearings and ring and pinion failure.

fixes: buy the longer pinion with your gears and longer yoke.
ditch the stock carrier for a locker. apply silicone to the splines on the yoke before assembly to seal the yoke to the pinion shaft to stop leakage. once in a while check to make sure the nut is still tight. also get some shouldered ring gear bolts from a dana 70. the 10.25 bolts can back off and come loose.
overall , im pleased with my 10.25 . but i have done all the upgrades.

wow! thanks this sounds like a good fix & what your saying makes good sense I believe I will stick with & follow the upgrades Where did you find gears lower than 5.13??
thanks again

It'll work sweet until the first time the yoke or driveshaft touches a rock... then it's over.

O.K. I got this on a trade for some stuff I got for free

Dude... you got ripped off. :flipoff2:

Which is why you run one, right? ;)

Thanks for your concern.
How many have you had this problem with??
