ford bronco axles

lol yea thats what i was thinking.....when if ever did they have a 9" in the rear?

and did i read that you joined the marines?

Big broncos had them from 78-83, then they used both the 8.8 and 9" until 86, though the two 85's I've screwed with were both 8.8's.

And indeed you did.

you can swap a 9" from a 78-79 but you will not be able to run the fuel injection with the 9". broncograveyard.com also has a "bolt-in" dana44 solid axle swap for the front of this model Bronco. Both 9" rear and solid axle dana44 front end can be found under 78-79 f-150 and Broncos. also broncograveyard.com claims you could use a dana60 front with additional parts.

Why? What does the rear axle have to do with the fuel injection?

Useless ttb up front
Useless for serious crawling, yes. If you want to go fast and jump, baja-style, then it's a great setup.
8.8 rear, D44 TTB front, 3.55 gears, possible L/S front and rear.
Bingo.

The 8.8 in the '96 has the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) and tone ring in the rear, so a 9" is not a straight swap. If you want more info, the absolute best spot is here:

Search the archives, there's endless amounts of knowledge on the big broncos.

Good point

This thread is two years old now, I knew I didn't remember posting in it. Anyway, you don't need the vss for the engine to run...
But you need it for the tranny to shift. And, I totally didn't look at the thread date. Holy old thread resurrection.

I guess that must be a ford thing. Cuz i know on ZR2USA.com just about everyone that does a SAS on there Z's (unless they are goin 1ton) they use the good ole 9", I know that is what i'm goin with when that time comes.

I guess I need to do a little more research,broncograveyard.com says it is a straight swap if you are not going to use F/I , if you are going to a carb, then a 9" is the way to go. I will hopefully soon be swapping a .040 73 460 4 speed dana44 solid axle 9" into my 93 bronco
