Bought a 2010 Escape XLT V6 6spd w 65k thursday. It seems to run flawlessly, motor/trans are very quiet and smooth. Put about 50 miles on it and I changed the front brakes yesterday w ceramic pads and turned rotors and it now drives like a brand knew car. Late yesterday afternoon it apparently went into failsafe while under power about 15 mph approaching a stoplight. An orange wrench symbol appeared on the dash ( indicating throttle control/powertrain issue ) The motor idled irradically and would not respond to throttle input, the temp guage was normal. I limped across the street and shut it off for 30 secs. It cranked up and ran flawlessly all the way home 5 miles and has'nt done this driving it 2 more times around town . I had Advance check for a code and they got nothing. I assume a dealership can find a code stored in the computer? The car has a slight oil leak I think it's the oilpan gasket but the oil is full, fresh and synthetic and beyond the issue yesterday it drives as new. Any advice is welcome.

i would start by checking throttle body for any buildup those fly by wires are funny about any dirt or buildup around the butterfly, my wifes 05 freestyle done that with her around 100k and didnt store a code either, i used a toothbrush and some throttle body cleaner and scrubbed it really good(it was nasty) and no issues since and it is over 150k now...probly need to do that again actually

scared to death!!!!!

Thanks man, I forgot to mention it's a Flexfuel motor and they detailed it while we were at the bank and dumbass detailed ( or sprayed something like Armorall ) all over the engine bay and shined up the plastic parts that were spotless already :kaioken: ........wifey is afraid to drive it now until we have it looked at...............

Checked the butterfly and it's brown in the inside, but no buildup at all, edges are clean a sensor in the intake was also clean.

The buildup typically is in the bore not on the butterfly and from my experience its behind the butterfly with fly by wire vehicles that use the butterfly to control idle speeds as opposed to a IAC valve. Typically the first customer complaint is the vehicle didn't respond at light throttle conditions.

You guys are good, REAL GOOD :bounce::smokin: , I just got off the phone w a service adviser at Crossroads Ford who I happened to go to highschool w and is very aware of all things Ford. After describing the malfunction friday, He said exactly what yall told me, it was the tb and to clean the tb w a toothbrush and tb cleaner. He also said the tb may possibly be going bad and if so eventually it will not go out of fail safe by restarting it and the tb will have to be replaced. Thanks for the great advice guys and I'm fixin to clean it this morning if the rain holds off.

Update............nother hiccup yestrday I was drivin, 2 today to and from work, her drivin..........got a new TB @ Crossroads Ford parts, open till 8 how cool is that? TB installed ( too easy ) :D ranner up and down the road 10 mins ( not flogged ) seems OK, time will tell and so will I. It appears theres a bunch of faulty TBs w contaminated circuit boards from 09-12 and possibly a recall coming. I hope that's our problem, if it is the TB was $147 and w the brake job added it's still a great deal IMO, payed 12k, it appraised for 17+ !!

the new TB should fix it i have installed 4 in the past year (on 4 differnt cars ) ford says " it is from people not cleaning them like they should "

Thanks, What are Fords recomendations on cleaning it ? I was able to easily clean the old one spotless w just a clean rag and some TB cleaner, no brushing needed. It was just a tacky black/brown film on the bore/backside of the butterfly and not stuck or crusty.

They use in most cases a BG intake service.

Here we go again..........check engine light came on today, code p0030 or oxygen sensor. The car is running fine though the light stays on. I wondered if I needed to disconect the battery when I changed the TB, I did'nt bother to. I assume there are more than 1 O2 sensors on this car?
