Four day work week

That would be great...

If I only worked 40 hours a week.

I'm for it. i wouldnt mind being able to be on the trail by friday morning and not have to take a vacation day.

One of my clients has gone to a four day week. Now instead of getting work calls from 8-5 M-F, I now get them from 7 to 6 M-Th, and 8-5 on Friday (everybody else) It just added 8 hours a week to my on-call time. :( They like it though.

This is also based on teh assumption that all hours of "work time" are of equal productivity. My bet is that people are not such happy campers during hours 9 and 10... 10 hours is a long time to be working straight.
On that note, I'm betting they also have to extend lunch and "off" time to compensate - otehrwise you are also losing an hour lunchtime off. I know NC has las about how many minutes "off" you must be given per minutes of "work" time.

Hell based on this same logic - why not just do 2 20 hr days?
This sounds great and all, but could make things very dificult for families with 2 qorking parents and kids... I'm just saying it's not all roses.

Yep, that's right.... of my clients...most folks start getting 'bored' about 3:30 or 4pm, and start hopping around on the Internet until quiting time. (Not everybody, everyday, but enough to show a pattern). My client that went to 4 10's...employees start playing more on the 'net about 3pm, goes on til 6. Get bored earlier, play longer. Again, not everyday/everybody, but there is a pattern here. Of course this is statistically meaningless, because the 4-day client may have different management policies, tolerance, etc.

10 hours would be a breeze. I typically put in almost 70 hours in 5 days in a warehouse environment, hard hot work. I'm not saying I like it but c'mon, the 8hour days are pretty much over in todays world

I have worked all types of schedules............. 5 8's, 4 10's, 4 9's & 4 and by far for a 40 hour week 4 10's was the best. Also if you really think about it if you work 50 hours a week your sched really wouldn't change anyways.

BS, I notice a big difference between leaving at 5pm (9hr day) and 6pm (10hr day). In order for it not to mess up my schedule too much, I end up eating dinner at my desk around 5:30 :flipoff2:

I do agree that 4-9 or 10's is better than 5-8's. I've done them all too. I was being candid with a previous manager, and told him I would probably be more productive with 5-8s compared to 4-10's, he cried BS...40hrs is 40hrs. I said alrighty-then, 4-10s it is :wheel:

We did 4 - 10s at work one summer. There are 2 of us and we rotated on call each week.
It worked out great.
We did:
me
Mon -10
Tues- 10
Wed- 10
Thurs-10
Fri-off
Sat-off
Sun-off
Mon-off

Him
Mon-off
Tues-10
Wed-10
Thur-10
Fri-10
Sat-off
Sun-off
Mon-10

It would switch every week. You ended up with a 4 day weekend every other weekend. And you still got your regular 2 day weekend on the others.

Sadly, after 1 year, he decided he didn't want to do it anymore.

The postal service did something a few years ago in their maintenance division (not sure if they still do it or not) where everyone worked 4 10's, but their day off roated. One week it was Monday, next it was Tuesday, etc etc. Wake New Hope FD Station Two does something similar.

Dang, that would be awesome!

When I took my current job in 2006, I began working four 10 hour days, Mon-Thurs. I love it!! Obviously there are times where I have worked more than 4 days and/or more than 40 hours, but that is the exception rather than the norm for me. Those first few weeks were tough getting use to it, but now, you’d have to give me a huge salary increase to talk me into willingly working five 8s.

My wife only works part time, 20 hours per week. A couple weeks ago she talked her employer into letting her work four 5 hour days instead of five 4 hour days. Her boss said that was fine, but she had to let me pick the day she was going to be off because he didn’t want to be blamed for her being at home on Fridays when I am off!! I told her she could pick, so she works Mon-Thurs now too.

yeah....but you still wouldn't go wheeling.....:flipoff2:
You missed an awesome rafting/wheeling/4th trip.

I'm working on it. The radiator is mounted, the TC is bolted up but I'm still fooling with the shifters. Big Bird II will wheel again.

you will find all the mandatory break laws to be a myth.
Those are union standards, and do hole true in a very limited number of OSHA cases.

When my wife was a DM in retail, they had an employee try to sue them because the company policy was no eating in store and no breaks if only one person was in the store. 22nd employee called out and this girl worked a 10 hour shift without food or bathroom break. Now in all honesty given the situation no one would have fired her for locking the door for 5 minutes, but she was gold digging. Anyway, the judge threw it out and said, if an employer in a non-hazardous situation wants to require 20 hour shifts and no breaks that is their prerogative, just like it is the employee's right to quit.

I'm a cook, this would have no effect on me b/c people want to eat when they are hungry. If I had a "normal" 9-5 job I would be all for it though

we start 4 12's and 8 on friday, tomorrow. if we work on saturday its 4 12's 10 on friday and 8 on saturday. fun. cant really get bored here being in a 15ft ditch laying 24" sewer. yum. i didnt know you could still make a living on 40 hours

i didnt know you could still make a living on 40 hours

Apparently you can. I just got back from the dentist, and they work 8-5 M-W,8-2 Thursday, and off every Friday! What a pie work schedule.

I consider myself lucky to not have to work terribly long hours for the most part. Sometimes there may be 50+ hour weeks but usually it is 42-45. My schedule is 9 hours M-Th, and 4 hours Friday. Our companies 250ish field guys work 4-10s, and I wish the office would stick to that schedule... Im not sure why we work two different ones quite honestly.
