Fittin to tell a story....not an EPIC @77GreenMachine story...but a story non-the-less...

Place: Good Evening Ranch, Canvas WVa
Date: May 15 2021
Crew: Misfitz (Minus a few)

**Skip to 1st reply for pics of the event if you don't care about OUR adventure**

So initially I was making reservations for the beach to make the CTB annual beach run on the outer banks. Called the campground to reserve a spot....and I'm too late  Apparently Errdamnbody done made arrangements MONTHS ago #becausecovid. Called a few others and no luck...I found ONE, way down the beach, but when they asked what kind of camper I had...they said they didn't all "those kind" Whateve...I truly hate the beach. Like with a passion.

Anyway, while we were up at the ranch a couple of months ago and were told about the upcoming "Moon Buggy event" Piqued my interest to say the least. Dave from Oliver's was with me and he too wanted to see this....so we started making arrangements to be BACK at the Ranch for this event. The time finally came, and Derek, Rod, and Joe MF Jones rolled out early to be there Thursday Morning. Casey came in shortly after...BTW Casey spent most of the weekend in this position

:flipoff2:

About the time those fellas arrived, Clay-quan and myself were getting geared up to head out at 3pm. Made my stop at one of the FEW places that had diesel, and filled up...along with a couple of spares in case

IMG_20210511_190754186.jpg

After gearing up we rolled out about 3:30 and headed straight up the mountain.

Just before hitting Fancy Gap, like LITERALLY 40ft from the loves exit as we are both in the fast lane trying to build steam........ Clay hits me on the GMRS radio that "I just lost my clutch"

:wtf:

I'm thinking...."OK, what does this mean....To Clay, lost his clutch could mean it's just hot/worn and there's little left.....OR..the pressure plate could have let go and there's literally no disengagement"

What we know NOW, is that the Slave has gotten air in the line and he has very LITTLE clutch. Of course THIS knowledge wasn't dropped on us till later in the story.

After making the climb up Fancy Gap we decided to keep going till the 77/81 split and fuel up...And make a decision from there.

I was at the pump first...then parked to walk over to see where clay was.

I always love the irony of parking here
IMG_20210513_165845019_HDR.jpg

Clay said he had very LITTLE clutch...and after a consult with our emergency mechanic (Phillip) we made the decision to roll on and maybe grab a part on the way.

Well...that didn't work so well. A mile from the Princeton exit the slave gave up the ghost entirely. This will be the part @BigClay has to share, because it's his to tell (or not) This is also the part of the story where "FU AAA" comes in....Clay can also opt to tell that

Lot's of prayer, and decisions were made....Clay was at a point where he just wanted to head back home. I tried to encourage my brother to not get down...that this was just a speed bump....and if he continued on, this would be an epic journey. Joe MF Jones and Casey had already offered to come down and get Clays jeep and trailer and take it back. Phillip and Chris had also offered to come UP and get the Jeep and trailer to take it home. All were simply waiting for Clay to decide. (this is also where Clay can choose to elaborate on why this decision SOUNDS like it's being drawn out and not able to be made within seconds of the options being presented :D)
Finally he reached the conclusion that he DID want to keep going. At that time I sent Rod a txt to "send the cavalry" to which he responded: "They done BEEN gone"
It's at that point we know we have an 1:30 wait before they get there.........soooooo.......Beer:30 started early at Chili's while we waited for Joe MF Jones and Casey to come FROM the ranch and grab Clays trailer and Jeep, as well as the wrecker that the ranch uses to head down and get Clays truck/Camper

That 1:30:00 passed like a blink of an eye. Before you know it Keith shows up to much on some chips with us as we eat a meal and enjoy BOGO beers
I looked at my txt to see what time Rod told me they were gone and it had been 1:21:00 and I literally said "well we need to get moving, they'll be here any minute" and as soon as that left my mouth Casey's BBC (big black Chevy) was on the exit ramp thru our window.

We knew the tow truck would be slower so Casey and Joe went in chili's to throw some groceries down their neck while Clay, Keith and I separated the truck and trailer. I told Clay to drop it in 4lo and bump the starter to move the truck out of the way so casey could hook to the trailer, and we separated the 2.

Tow truck shows up and hooks to Clayquans truck

IMG_20210513_212937712.jpg

And Clay hops in Shaq to ride to the ranch.

We roll in after midnight and the towtruck drops Clay off at a camp site. We all get set up and by 1:30am are all set to get 30 minutes of rest

The next morning we make breakfast and survey the camp site

IMG_20210514_095148516_HDR.jpg

left to right is Joe/Rod/Derek on 3 "campsites" then I'm sideways taking up 2 "campsites" then clay is on the left side of 2 "campsites" and Keith out of picture on the right set up in a hammock on his trailer

Meaning the power and water connections are centered for each campsite to access. We techically only have 5 campsites reserved, and there's 8 sites here. Bobby said it wouldn't matter unless someone was a dick about it. They could always put one camper between me and clay, and 2 on his other side. For Clay..at 1am that's the only place he could drop Clay, and as for me....at 1am I really didn't GAF

After Breakfast we hit the trails. several good trails, But first I had to show @Stuntman Autoworks how REAL rock crawlin is done: With tire shine :huggy:

IMG_20210514_095243725_HDR.jpg

IMG_20210514_102803025_HDR.jpg

then onto Chaddilack hill ....Ahhhh my happy place!!!

IMG_20210514_113106708_HDR.jpg

It was after Chadilack that Casey decided to break again, and headed back to camp. We staged for the next trail and derek ran out of fuel.

IMG_20210514_120849203_HDR.jpg

This was a good break to head to camp and eat some sammiches.

We get back to camp and of course there's a camper hovering wanting "his spot" which Keith is in....No problem..Keith moves. But this dude said he has 3 spots, and it's all family. And demands his spots together.
A few minutes later the owner comes with a track loader to move clay to give these cockgobblers their 3 spaces next to each other.
This pushes Clay and Joe to quickly dissect clays issue to help move his vehicle under it's own power. This is when Joe MF Joes bled the clutch and found air in the lines. And after that, Clay was able to move his Truck under it's own power out of the way of the swiff family dickheadsons and onto our designated camp sites.
This of course meant I needed to ALSO reposition to share Dereks power/water

IMG_20210514_174231617_HDR.jpg

So now here we are, reconfigured and in our designated spots :shaking:

IMG_20210514_174005013_HDR.jpg

More trails were hit..then dinner and campfire stories

Beer, Bourbon, Butt, then Bed (BTW...Rod's smoked Butt is amazballs)

The next morning; Biscuits, Gravy, Sausage, and eggs....and I had to pour a little white flour out for my missing homies

IMG_20210515_083327619_HDR.jpg

After a tasty breakfast, we headed over to the honey hole for the competition.

First thing we was was all the spectators, then the course, then the buggies, then...the MULLET

IMG_20210515_095451447.jpg

The crowd was not AT ALL diverse. But we really didn't think about that at ALL until we happened to see the ONE person that kinda stuck out. Thankfully, they had a great sense of humor about it

IMG_20210515_144106683.jpg

turns out they were running 2 classes at a time. Basically the every man challenge, and unlimited. And from our vantage point we could see both races, which was spectacular.

Several rollovers but one in particular was the team where Mulletman was the spotter. This KG rolled this buggy back over BY HIMSELF  The power of the mullet!!

IMG_20210515_104319501.jpg

A few more pics of the event

Jake, from State farm was there spotting for his 14yr old son

Here you can see the bronco in the other challenge course adjacent to the unlimited

The kid ended up taking 2nd.

Here is the winner.....I'll let his line choice speak for itself

This is where he ended up when he timed out. He's wedged pretty good in there...and keep in mind that's his BACK axle as he's LEAVING that area

IMG_20210515_123519394.jpg

On to Keyhole.

I've got lots of video, but it's hard to see because the camera focuses on the trees...but from our vantage point, it was stupid

These trips are always fun. Can't say I've ever come back from one wishing I'd stayed home.

The wheeling is epic. Espcially at the ranch. You can choose to ride service roads all day. You can do mild stuff, and you can do "Oh you're getting body damage" stuff. Then..you can sit back and watch "There's no way he's doing that" stuff

But the very best part of all these trips comes after we get back to camp and just shoot the breeze. And if you can keep Derek awake, your sides are gonna hurt the next day

I was the first to go down (sorta)...elocker motor decided to not participate in the weekend's festivities. Pulled the motor out, slid the teeth w/ flat head to engage, put motor back in and we were back at it...

1621266087720.png

But not before Casey got back and decided to replace 1 of 2 axle shafts for the weekend...

1621266211667.png

Once Casey realized the shaft gave up in 2 place and one was at the inner spines we wanted to try to pull it out w/ a magnet...but we needed one strong enough. I thought I'd go check w/ Bobby, so Derek offered to drive. This, at the time, sounded fine...I hadn't had a chance to ride in Derek's buggy and he wanted to show me the whoo-pow of the new 6.2. Well...I think he left his short-course skills at home bc 30 seconds into the ride to go find us a magnet we were like this...

Bobby offered for the boys to help dig the mud pit

Some new trails that had just been cut. Me and Joe tried getting up in it on Friday but couldn't get enough traction to get over the tree roots blocking both entrances. Turns out Derek or Aarom didn't have anything for the right entrance

1621266611689.png

1621266732976.png

Left entrance denied Derek but Aaron ended up making it all the way through with a little winch pull from behind after getting hung up.

So I will fill in where Troy mentioned because I will start off and say I have been in situations that were sketchy, but this takes the cake.

We are heading up 77 and get into a little traffic. I am holding 4th gear and doing ok. All of a sudden some one pulls in-front of me and slows down, I need to now downshift to keep moving, I put in the clutch and nothing, do it again, nothing. I have lost so much momentum that the truck is stalling and I am doing 5mph. I come to a complete stop. There are three lanes at this point and I am just past a blind curve. There is no shoulder, the guardrail is about 3’ from me and there cars wizzing by in the two lanes to my left.

I get on the radio to Troy and tell him what is going on. I am sitting in the right lane on a blind curve completely stopped and cars are missing the rear of my trailer by feet every time someone comes through the curve.

I call 911 and explain to the dispatcher where I am and I need some help. She says she will send an officer right away.

the next call I make is to AAA. As soon as they answer they say “are you in a safe spot” and I respond “hell no I am not I am in the middle of the freakin road broke down” the guy asks if I have called 911 and I told him I had, I then tell him where I am and he puts me on HOLD while he checks his computer. I am on hold for 4 minutes he then comes back on and asks me AGAIN what is wrong and where am I!!! I lose it and tell him with many expletives I am in the middle of a lane of traffic past a blind curve and I need to get me, my truck that a big ass camper on it, trailer and jeep somewhere safe and right away. Pure me on hold AGAIN this time for 3 minutes.

Still no cops and and still holding my breath with each truck that approaches. I talk to Troy on the radio and ask if he can call 911 again and see what is taking so long. He calls and apparently does a better job of getting the fact I am stuck in a moving traffic lane across and they transfer him directly to an officer that says “oh my, I know exactly where he is I am on my way”.

Meanwhile Captain Useless at AAA and I are getting no where and finally he says “unfortunately we do not have anything available to come help you” and now I am pissed. Then he has the audacity to say “is there anything else I can help you with today?” I lost my shit.

Cop shows up and is really cool, we talk and he asked if I have a tow truck coming and I proceed to tell him my AAA story and he starts laughing and says he has a guy, should he call him and I said please.

Have I mentioned why I don't have "towing insurance" cough I mean triple A?

Glad you're alive and well to tell the rest of the story.

This trip was freaking amazing. Easily some of the hardest trails I have wheeled so far. My favorite trails were Cadillac hill and jigsaw. Biggest thing that made some of the trails difficult was just not having enough diff clearance being on 34s aired down. Specifically the little hill climb to get on to a trail when your tire kicks the rock underneath your vehicle lol. A great thing about this place is no trail is really far away from essentially a service road. If a few rigs wanted to hit a harder trail the rest can just find a spot to park and walk less than 100 yards through the woods to the trail. I took very few pictures. Hopefully Joe's videos turned out.

Yea y'all keep posting pictures of this place. Just makes me want to go more. Looks like a fun trip minus the stuck on a blind curve dead in the water....

So about 5 minutes later I see this semi wrecker coming past me and pull in front of me. First words out of his mouth are “damn you got a death wish or something?” He asks where I want to go and I say all I need to do is get to the Lowe’s home improvement parking lot (that is where Troy has parked) so then I can figure out what to do. He proceeds to figure out the best way to accomplish this tow and decided he is going to lift up on the front of the truck using my front hitch as the place to put the boom. He uses two ratchet straps to keep the truck secured. I am still coming down from my near heart attack situation so all I can think of this is not going to work. So quickly I feel like if those straps break, my entire setup is gonna start rolling back down the mountain, so what is probably the least safe thing to do... turn to the cop and say “can I ride in my truck?” Cop says “go for it”. My thought is I can hold the brakes if those straps fail.

So I make it to the Lowe’s parking lot and who calls me... AAA asking me to do a survey on my experience... I can’t type the words that I said to that guy (not the same one as before) and tell him what level of pissed offness I am in.

Here's a link to all my videos.

I had a great freaking time this weekend. Kinda makes me want to buy some land up there to put a camper just so I can stay for a few weeks if I want lol. Ol' Bob Ross the RLF juggy did great the whole weekend and didn't break anything this time. Can't say I made it up everything I tried, I'm in the same boat as @rcalexander105 , I need more horse pressures. And I have a nagging front locker issue I need to take care of.

At least it looks like you can make a good shaft out of the pieces.

Duane
He just needs to upgrade to a 4 seater M&M buggy and be done with it
