i been workin on my runner for a few weeks now, so heres some pics. i've bought everything for it from people off NC4x4 except for the crossover steering arm, so thanks to all those who i got the parts from. so far the budget is less than $3K. this is going to be the wheeler ive always wanted to build, complete with power windows and A/C:bling:. let me know what you think so far.
the first pic is what it looked like when i got it.

Sweetness. I'm always wanting to see 'runner build-ups.

front: chevy dana 44 with '81 yota rear springs with add a leafs

rear: chevy dana 60 with '76 chevy rear springs

i also have a dual tranny setup for it

looks great man! sounds like a good budget build. one thing i noticed in the side shot of the axle hanging was: you may need some shims to get that caster/pinion angle corrected. your pinion could come up a bit and the caster def needs to be rolled down some. if its a trailered rig then it may be no big thing. not trying to be a "know it all" just make a polite suggestion. i think this thing will be sick when its done. did you get your dual tranny adapter from RCO?

well its not a mazda, but it will prolly lay frame on a rock

and thanks for the angled shim suggestion, ive been lookin at some on ebay, but i dont know what degree to get. guess i'll just get some and see what happens. i have a digital angle finder, do you know what a good caster angle is? i wish i woulda checked it before i pulled the axle from the chevy truck. and hopefully it will never see a trailer.

and i got the whole dual tranny setup from cburgin on here

Hey, that thing looks familiar.......
BTW, I recently got a RECALL notice from Toyota on that Runner, it says they want to replace the relay rod as they have a tendancy to break when steering sharply. Don't guess you'll be needing that notice now.
I'll scan it and post if you want to see it.
those wheels are original '85 SR5 wheels, someone might give ya a few bucks for those.

AH i see... yeah thats an RCO adapter. not sure but some quick research on pirate should answer that one for ya. if i had to guess i would say 2-4* positive (pointed down) imagine a strait line drawn through the ball joint holes in the knuckle, strait up and down (being 0*), you want that line to be angled forward forming an acute angle w/ the ground in front of the truck. too much and the tires will be turning intothe ground like a motor grader. not enough and the truck will wander and be death wobble prone. too much caster will cause under steer and too little will cause oversteer. just something to keep in mind. so if your 4* negitive now you would need a 6-8* shim to correct it. there is always the ole' cut and turn method to get it perfect, but thats not something i would personaly want to tackle. if you have a friend who is a master fabricator or someone who has experiance w/ turning knuckles that would be the best way to go. Honestly though shims should work fine. good luck on the build nice progress so far! -j

You may be a bit heavy for the dual trannies...which trannies are you using?

nah, i dont think i'll be needing that recall info, but thanks anyways. i guess i'll try to sell the wheels on here, ive already posed the rearend for sale.

im not sure which ones, but one is the same as the stock one in my 81 truck. they are two different ones. why would i be a bit heavy for that setup? im new to the dual tranny thing.

you'll be fine dont sweat it. the front should be an L series and the rear is a w56. csudman broke a rear toy shaft and both fronts, including his driveshaft in one outing at dpg running that setup and no failure yet on the trannys and trust me we have tryed to break'em. if he can break a rear toy shaft and the trannys live i'd say its a pretty darn tough setup!the beauty is you'll be fine w/ just 4:10 gears

you plannign on cutting the fenders? they kinda need it because they are mostly rust. good way to keep your lift low but still have good travel!

still gotta build drive shafts, make some brake lines, relocate the gas tank, mount shocks, and do alittle sheetmetal work on the rear fenderwells and at the shifters.

Dude, its got to be the angle of the shot, but that first pic... thats the most AMAZING approach angle I've ever seen w/ leaf springs. Either way the stance is awesome, love the fender trim. Now get that sucka done. Tell Clayton he needs to be over there motivatin' you.
