Garage Snake

From the smell in the garage this morning, I'm guessing a snake snuck in yesterday when the wife forgot to close the garage door. Is there an easy way to entice him to leave without dismantling all the shelves and boxes to find him? The garage is a mess right now while in the process of packing to move.

Give him a few weeks he will move on once he gets rid of your mouse problem or other snakes depending on the species.

I normally would agree with the given advice, but not knowing the species of the snake, and whether their are small children and pets present would make me more prone to find him......

I agree i haven't studied much reptiles. But i believe copper head are the only species in NC that emits a musk. If thats the case it needs to be found carefully and met with lethal force. Especally if you are working in the garage.

But this is just an online forum so we arent resonponsible for what happens if you follow our advice.

Black snakes smell like a skunk when they are scared or threatened. I had a 5’ one in my garage last Saturday. Grabbed my tool bag to throw in the truck and BAM! There he was, scared the crap out of me. I don’t mind them but don’t like being caught off guard. I relocated him across the street, and he sure stunk the place up while doing so.
I thought they were the only once that smelled like that.

If there is nothing to eat, he won’t stay around long.

The only logical solution I can offer

There's a lot of snake repellants on the market.

I did a lot of research a few years ago on snake repellant, and from what I read there is nothing you can buy or do that will actually repeal snakes.
Just fyi...

When did this discussion turn to politicians?
But you are indeed correct, sir.

^^ this! We have tried everything to keep the snek out of our chicken houses and the only thing that works is wire small enough they don’t fit. Pellets, spray, oils, electric wire. They want in they will get in. If there isn’t anything they want, they will leave. If you don’t want to wait you will have to evict them on your terms.

For just a little motivation to maybe make you think about finding the snake and relocating him.....

This is my brothers foot after a bite from a copper head last night. He spent the night in the hospital and won't be able to walk for at least 2 weeks.

After thinking about not being able to walk for that long, and which would mean 2 weeks not being able to go to work....

I spent the night trying to find one to bite me....

I haven’t found a snake in our garage yet, but I did find this skin above one of the garage doors.

Hmmm. That’s an interesting skin. One I would tend to avoid unless somebody can identify it better.

I'm no expert, but judging by the size/location/etc, I'd be pretty confident it's a black rat snake.

yup black rat snake. don't mind em in my garage but if they are caught in
the chicken house we relocate em MILES away. oh and golf balls do work.
they swallow them and can't digest so they just rot from the inside out.
how do i know-- cause we've found two black snake carcass with golf balls
in em.

I should update. It seems my squatter has moved out on his own. Or just waiting to surprise me as I unpack boxes after we move.

Granny always told us to "take note" if we smelled cucumbers and we were not eating any, she said Copperheads smelled like cucumbers.......
