Gasoline storage

I have a gasoline powered generator for emergency use. How does everyone stockpile gasoline to make sure there is enough to run a generator for two or three days?

Rotate out my stock. I keep 30 gallons but after 2 weeks I put 5 in my DD and go fill that tank up. Constant rotation and never let a 5 gallon tank sit more than a few weeks

LP and Diesel generators. Worse comes to worse, for the gas generator, I be sure and fill all the car tanks (and RV -- 80 gallons) if ice/hurricane is coming up.

PRI-G and PRi-D in everything.

Stock up on Diesel in winter so you get the anti-gelling and whatever other additives.

Just added up....if all the cars, truck, jeeps, RV are full....I got right at 350 gallons in tanks. If all that goes to generator (0.9gph), that's about 16 days. I keep 150+ gallons of Diesel on hand. (2 55 gallon drums, plus a bed tank, plus 12.5 in generator tank, plus up to 7 gals in tractor).

I hope you are using a biocoide in all thathe diesel.

and that's if you run it 24 hrs. In reality there's little need to do that.

Yep...

On our new house, I am planning on a 7kw autostart. Been playing with an arduino controller to monitor the fridge and upright freezer, and kick on/off the generator based on need. The autostart genset is really there just to keep that up when we travel. I got the big Diesel that'll run the whole house when we want power.

I've strictly used non ethanol gas and fuel stabilizer in my 4 stroke outboard , lawnmower, weed eater, chainsaws and the 84 Toyota for the last 5 years and they all crank and run like they were run yesterday, after sitting idle for months.
Yes certified (tested) non ethanol with marine Stabil is the only gas that will last. Even at that the shelf life isnt great so rotate it.

I keep a few jugs a gas use as needed then refill so I always have at least 10 gallons on me

I try to keep about 5 gallons in a can. Non-ethanol.Then I always fill up our boat after we take it out. So that's 30 gallons of fuel right there. Hopefully never go more days than that.

I got some stabilizer from a BG distributor, I says 28 months before degradation. I put it in my genny (10 gallons) and start it every 3-4 months with no issues almost 2 years in. Its really good that i haven't needed the genny in that long but stinks as far as fuel storage.

Just scared myself. Been a long day and at a glance the thread title looked like gas shortage. My first thought was oh shit what are the idiots panicing about this time. Interuption over carry on.

It's probably going to bite me in the ass for admitting this publicly... but I don't do anything. I have a handful of gas cans that seal tightly. I fill them up with whatever shit comes out of the pump, and I try to use it before it's 6 months old. There's a full bottle of red Stabil in the barn, but I haven't touched the stuff in a while.

We went about three days without power back in the fall. Used 30-35 gallons, including running the well pump, water heater, furnace, both fridges, microwave, toaster oven, etc, at a nameplate rating of 0.9 GPM at 100% load.

I only run non-ethanol in my 2 stroke lawn equipment and I plan to only run non-ethanol in the generator. For this reason, I plan only siphon out of the vehicles in an emergency. Looks like I will be investing in another couple of 5 gallon containers and rotating them out every month or so.

I just keep thinking about how on The Walking Dead they keep finding random cars and cranking' em up, but you know damn well any gas is at least 7 years old.
So, it must not matter very much b/c it'll always work in the nick of time.

The hose off a pressure test gauge works to pump gas out of anything with a test port... I always forget to bring my gas can to the gas station for the lawn tractor.

That brings another question to mind. What do you guys use to siphon gas out of a car or boat?

A boat you can simply use a quick connect adapter and prime it and gravity drain it out of the tank. Cars... Take fuel line loose and activate pump, brass chisel or the drain plug. Siphon hoses don't really work on newer stuff due to baffles and such.
