Granite Counter tops?

Getting ready to do a little work in the kitchen and will probably end up doing granite. I have 34 square feet of counter top space in 3 sections, one which includes the sink that I will be replacing before we start.
How much does granite cost?
Does anyone on here do it as their main business? (not looking for "side" jobbers)
What should i look for in an installer?
 
Lowes has it installed for around $40 a square foot. I would "guess" other places would be close... I have always heard that "old north state granite " (704-986-4472) does the best work with the best prices...he will probably do mine when I am ready.
 
If it's an undermount sink, you'll take it to them and they will cut the hole to match and install it themselves.

Can't speak to any places in Charlotte but the showrooms' quotes include the material, fabrication, and installation. Get three quotes. If you know the color you want, great, or you can go look at the suppliers' stock. There are three tiers that are priced accordingly, so price depends on the color you choose. There are some great colors available in the 'cheapest' tier, so it's not about quality just color and availability.

I much prefer tile backslash but make sure, whatever you do, they caulk perpendicular joints, not grout!

For those in Charlotte I have a long time friend in York that all he does is granite.

We re-did our kitchen last year. I got 3 prices he was almost half the next lowest and that was a "no friend" rate because insurance...

I'll be glad to provide the introduction and then you can decide on your own. He gets his granite from one of the 2 Westinghouse showrooms so its super convenient for you.

Great company here. Best friend since childhood, even worked for him a couple years. Top notch family company, latest water jet and cnc equipment.

Fortunately while I worked there I did all my rock after hours from remnants ..read deep discount. Couldn't quote a current price, way to many variables in edge profile, splash, sinks, etc. Choice in stone could net any where from $30 sqft to $200+.

They have remnants in stock as well, and also do solid surface quartz.

I am looking to upgrade our kitchen countertops to granite or other material. I'm in Charlotte anyone have a contact they would reccomend? I am going to call on a couple from earlier posts. I am l
Also building an outdoor kitchen, originally thought granite tops but now considering alternatives possibly concrete. Any reccomendations. No tile.

I’d do concrete in a heartbeat. I did concrete on my last house remodel in lieu of granite. Spent $1500 versus $7000 and I got to make it like I wanted and with a fancy edge. Can stain it or acid etch it or whatever. And, it didn’t take away from the value of the home when sold.

Plus, granite is so 2005... :)

Your labor was free?

Also, your granite cost sounds crazy high. Like, double.
 
My labor isn’t free but I didn’t spend $5500 in labor, not even close. Probably a day to form, a day to pour, an a day to polish and cleanup and strip forms. Not really full days as I was also doing other things in between tasks.


I don’t remember the square footage but the 4 quotes I received ranged from $6800 up to $11500. The $6800 price was some of the cheaper granite from Lowe’s. Got two quotes from independent granite counter top subs and they were $8500+ for something not exoctic.

I did it all. Forming, pouring, finishing.

I enjoy concrete work and have the tools and knowledge to do it, so I didn’t hesitate one minute to do it myself. Plus, there aren’t a large selection of subs that do concrete countertops in my area, so I was a little limited in options.

I don’t have the knowledge to successfully mix my own counter top mix like a pro would so I bought the quickrete counter top mix and added the dye as I wanted. If you decide to DIY this, the only place in NC that I found that stocks the counter top mix was Lowe’s in West Raleigh. There may be one in CLT area but I didn’t find one.
 
My rough math says it cost you about $5k all-in to do concrete.

Granite in our kitchen was $2k, turn key.

I removed the old counters myself (save $100 this way) and was responsible hooking up the sink. I got 4 quotes, took the lowest back to the second cheapest and asked them to match or beat it. Ended up going with Natural Stone Gallery. They did a fine job, 2 weeks to fabricate and took about 1hr start to finish for install once they arrived.

Pics didn't come thru on my phone.
I think we have about 37 as feet. Haven't decided about back splash.
2k isn't bad I was thinking 5K. Wonder if I could get a better deal with outdoor kitchen included about the same SF.

Kind of want to try the concrete, outside I've got some ideas about forming in a sink.

They turned out pretty good, but we didn't use a proper concrete vibrator so we have issues with air bubbles that had to be filled. I would do them again, but the wife doesn't want to because they stain too easily.

Was wondering aboit staining. Is there not a sealer that is designed for food on concrete?

There's a number of them on the market. No idea how well they work, but I've seen a few out there in my travels for future kitchen porn.
