Green Diesel Handles

I dont buy much diesel. actually, i dont buy any diesel. I am not aware of any common colors on the handles but my boss is pretty upset today. It seems this weekend he stopped in at a BP, he normally uses shell stations. he pumped 15 gallons of regular into his diesel before catching it. He says the handle was green so he assumed it was diesel as it is common knowledge green handles signify diesel.


Do you guys just "go for the green", or do you read the labels when pumping diesel?
 
Green is the diesel at most but I've been told of people doing the same thing at bps
 
I've heard of other people doing the same thing... some places diesel is yellow, I think, too?
 
I've done a second take at the BP when gassing up my car. See the green handle and think for a second that you might be pumping diesel into the gas tank.
 
I had a buddy tool dealer fill his up with gas. Wiped out a mereceds motor in a Freightliner with less than 60,000 miles. Cost him a little over $9500 for a shortblock....

x11.... I've heard too many stories about people pumping gas at a BP. Some Hess stations use green boots, too.

Always, always, ALWAYS check to be sure I've got the right one.
 
I look for the big label that says "diesel" above the pump
This, it's not that hard. While green "typically" is diesel, of course BP has green handles, and a few still have black diesel handles. You can't go by the color.

With that said, a veteran truck driver, that owned his own trucking company, filled up one of our fire trucks with regular once. He realized it early enough though and was able to drain the tank, refill with diesel and all was fine. He'll never forget it though, not that we would let him :lol:
 
My dad did that once in his truck that is now mine. He ran about 8 gallons through it. He added a quart of trans fluid and kept topping it off with diesel every day. That was around 30k I have 105k on it now with no issues. Not sure I would wanna rum any more than that through one.

ive seen the handles green, orange and black, so i never go by the handle color, that sticker that says diesel is usually pretty easy to read, if you can't read that, then generally look for the highest price pump, if you still can't figure it out, its the pump with the big nozzle!
 
I always check the label on the diesel/gas pump I'm using. Heard too many horror stories on this board not to double and triple check before I pull the lever.

Actually filled up at one diesel pump that had an orange handle. Checked that one about 4 or 5 times.
 
I have grabbed it and noticed the size of the nozzle was much smaller. Then again, that happens to me all the time.:lol:
 
Aren't the nozzles also a different size? Diesel bigger than gas so its nearly impossible to get into a gas tank filler?

I'd think that having the small nozzle hanging out in the oversize hole would be a tip too
("like a hotdog in a hallway"...
 
yeah the gas nozzle is almost half the size of the diesel filler, but traditionianally (old standard?) its always green. Having pumped gas in my diesel tank, I know how easy it is to do when you're standing at a pump with green gas nozzle and a black diesel nozzle "hidden" on the black pump base. Your mind kicks into autopilot a lot of times, in my case, I had a stranger babbling at me, distracting me while I was trying to start my fill-up. I had 1000 things on my mind, trying to focus on getting in/out of the gas staion and back on the highway, I'm really lucky I caught myself when I did, only 3 gal. gas into it.
 
I had to drain my tank after doin that one morning at a BP ....now I always double-check the pump before pullin the trigger.
 
MAybe the BP near work is different than the ones you guys use, BUT, when I swipe my card, and verify with zipcode, then I need to select the grade of fuel. If I'm getting diesel, and have the gas hose in my hand, no matter how many times I press the diesel button trying to select the 'grade' of fuel, It Won't Pump!
 
All diesel nozzles are not large.....with the new ulsd "auto" diesel fad bs nearly all of the nozzles except for truckstops have the small nozzles

That is true on the ones that have buttons, but some of them that have three gas nozzles and one diesel autosense which nozzle you pick up and ready the pump (or you flip the little lever below the nozzle).

Not true....there are THREE sizes to the nozzles. A small gas nozzle, the slightly larger diesel nozzle, and the huge diesel nozzle (normally only on truck stop pumps). Neither of the diesel nozzles will go into the small hole in the gas vehicles.

I remember seeing a nifty little device a few years ago that dropped into your filler neck. It would allow the diesel nozzles to fit into the neck because there was a small tube smaller than the inner diameter of both diesel nozzles, but was too large for the gas nozzle to go around it, therefore it would block you from using it. It was a drop it in and forget about it piece, that you could close the stock cap back onto the filler neck over it. I can't remember what it was called though.
 
actually the newest stores I am seeing are using identical nozzles for disel and gas...or at least so close that the diesel nozzle will fit into my chevy impala gas tank.

try talking on one phone, texting/emailing on another, pumping gas, and cleaning a windshield at night....thats how I about screwed up.

Weird. I haven't seen a diesel nozzle that close to the size of a gas nozzle. Then again I sold my diesel almost 2 years ago, although ULSD had been around quite a while by then.

Oh, and watch out, you're gonna blow up that gas pump with your cell phone :rolleyes:

:lol: Yea, that's pretty much it. Personally I've never had a close call with the diesel/gas switcheroo, I just remembered seeing it, in theory it would work, although in theory it probably would screw with the auto shutoff as well.
