yeah we're all thinking it.
But we need to give John some credit, he HAS been listening... sometimes at least...
 
Meh, I'll stir the pot a bit. A cage wouldn't have kept him from being ejected unless he built it like a bouncer. Sounds more like he wasn't wearing a seat belt- but I couldn't make it through the whole article.

That said, the merits of a properly built cage shouldn't need to be argued.

Nah, but if you look at the post accident picture, that thing mangled and not in the crumple some manner. I'm guessing even if he was buckled in, the welds and mount points for belt weren't solid enough to hold him. Not to mention, looking at the quality, I could see something structural giving out which caused him to lose control going into the path of the Pontiac.

Sadly, you're correct. I'd prefer some more details, but that's me. I think there is a lawsuit in route against whoever inspected that thing to get a plate.
 
I don’t know the whole story or why he was actually ejected but this brings up a solid point that is probably the most over looked feature in a roll cage. Seat and harness mounts. I’ve seen some excellent cages with shitty seat and harness mounts.
I would venture to say that in at least 75% of all Motorsport crashes the cage isn’t what saved the life. The seatbelt is. I don’t care how nice your cage is, if your not restrained properly and your head taps a bar or you’re ejected your not gonna care how bent that cage is. This is in my opinion how jeep and all of the UTV manufacturers get away with such poorly built factory cages.
Watch some in car videos of Baja or rally crashes. The drivers can roll 20 times at 120mph but they never move in their seat. If they weren’t properly restrained the cage would likely cause more damage.

This guy probably had harnesses bolted through the sheetmetal floor with 5/16”bolts and fender washers. It’s sad that stuff like this happens. The dude had two kids that are now without a father because he didn’t know what he was doing.

The problem wasn't not knowing ..... we all start out that way.
The problem was being stupid and not listening to those who did.

In another life long, long ago, I used to build racecars.
When I started offering cage advice on another 4x4 forum I was told to stfu .... racecars and off-road is two different things.
I said "true, but if my junk will protect you ass at 200 mph, I can guarantee it will at 2 mph!"

Then I pointed out that NASCAR pretty much invented safety tech.

I have a friend that has a homemade cart that started out as a 240sx. Now has a V8 with large turbo. However, he is also a crew chief with Andretti Racing and asked the Indy Car engineers to look over his designs for safety purposes. He is from Indiana and read the laws several times to see what constitutes being too modified to no longer be what it was intended, and found nothing. So the car is titled as a 240sx, and he left 8 inches of Nissan frame. The thing is scary fast and handles like no other but I’d still be scared to get in a crash with it.
 
I'm grinding my gears to a pulp trying to find a punny response as well...just can't seem to get the momentum. Ha!
