H1 wheel education

I don't think its hard to mount tires on H1s at all. I've had more trouble with standard wheels trying to get the tire over the bead.

It's not hard. It IS labor intensive though!

I've gotten all 4 of mine mounted without any major problems except I'm having a hard time getting two to hold air. One has been disassembled and reassembled twice now. I've checked for leaks around the beads, center oring, and valve stem oring but haven't seen anything bubble up. The other I am 95% sure is the center oring as I had to cut and splice that one together because the -458 oring was too big and I don't think I got a good clean cut/glue on there.

I typically coat the oring/grooves/flanges with RTV before I put them together.

I buy the rtv in the aerosol can like easy cheese and fill the groove with it. Then lay the oring in then put a thin layer of rtv on top of the oring. Then I impact for hours it seems like, LOL

So when y'all pull them apart you have to scrap all the rtv out? I'm really hoping to avoid using it but if I can't get anything else to work, I guess I'll have to

Yea but its not that bad. I get the bigger chunks with a big straight blade screwdriver then hit it with a wire wheel on a drill. Then it's ready to repeat.

If it's clean to begin with, the RTV will come off easy. RTV is really important with the 8 bolts imo. I have also heard of folks using heavy coat of grease on the oring with success.

I tried the grease thing on my first set and had nothing but problems. Rtv has worked on at least six sets of tires on three rigs so I'm sticking with that LOL.

I got so mad at the first set of tires trying to get them to seal I flipped out and started kicking things over, LOL. Things like a tire that had a pound of airsoft bbs in it. That was in 09.

I still find bbs when I sweep the shop[emoji20]

Haha I've got bbs in all of these. It was a crap shoot as to how much so I'm starting with 10oz in each. I'll try the grease method first I think and if that fails I'll do the rtv. I appreciate yalls help

I just used grease on my 12 bolts with no issues.

FWIW I have been in the Army for almost 14 years and changed MANY HMMWV tires including back when we had to break them apart by hand and remount the fresh rubber. Now they come assembled and you just bolt on a new tire/rim combo. Key to the operation was wiping ALL mounting/mating surfaces, lightly grease the tirebead on both sides, set the tire on the backside of the rim(set the back half up on a pair of jackstands), grease the groove, set the o-ring,grease the front half of the rim (where the o-ring will sit) then put the front half down onto the studs (back half). Tighten the nuts onto the studs 8,12,24... however many you have in a criss cross pattern just like lugnuts, progressively! Don't just smoke them tight right off the bat or the O-ring can "squirt" out. Once complete air up to about 55 psi and then back down to 50 psi (recommended cold psi) use soapy water all the way around both beads, around the valve stem, and around the rim mating studs/nuts to ensure a good seal. Repeat as necessary. We got good and could break and remount 4 in 1.5 hours with about 3 guys!!

Dang....I just used some soapy water to let the o-ring slide and just bolted the halves together. The set I had were cut down mag runflats, so they were easy enough to put in and take out. I never used RTV or grease and never had an issue with them leaking. Maybe I just got lucky and had a pretty straight set.
