Hand gun to start off with

The Smith and Wesson's M&P22 would be a good buy. A big bonus is that it is built on the same frame as their other pistols. So if you like the feel of the 22 size wise, the other calibers will feel the same. You'll even know how it functions as well as the controls.

So, how many people do you know that can take 147gr of +P+ in the chest?
i dont know any, but if you look it up, there are plenty of cases of ppl taking the shot and still commin, i personally just like knowing that when i hit someone they are not getting back up. ( i carry a snub nose .357)...its not the only reason i dont like the 9mm, i think it is a over penetrating round for a handgun. if you miss with a 9mm it can shoot on over to the neighbors house. if i get in a fire fight from more than 35 yards im no longer using a handgun so for me a 9mm is pointless.

Would you recommend the kel teck pf9? as a starter gun? Price is also going to be a concern as well. I know that the Kel-tecs are around the $300+ range. Also, is it worth getting one that is Parkerized?
I honestly, would like something smaller to start off with and also use it for protection for the time being. Only thing, I don't want to go shooting with my buddies and have them make fun of it :)

i actually shoot my glock 30 (.45) much better than my glock 19 (9mm). but its all about the shooter...... the thing to ppl forget is that sight picture had more to do with accuracy than the size of the round. and a longer barrel is better for sight picture....the new crazy is with small guns. but to be honest as long as you carry legally who cares if one or two ppl can tell. i think its more about the width of the gun anyway, and a 1911 is as slim as it gets and has a long sight picture. but dont ever buy a gun based on what others say. if i was you id go to a range and shoot as many as possible before buying one. and no one will make fun of you for your choice if you can back it up with a nice tight group at the range.

I'm also looking at the ruger lc9. Can anyone point me into the right direction of buying a used gun? Before dropping some serious cash on a new one, I'd like to make sure I'm still gonna be into shooting after a couple hundred rounds

Colfax gun is great to deal with. If looking for new I gave $389 for my lc9 with factory laser nib at the gun rack in Kernersville..

Must of these guys require you to have ccw? In order to buy?[/quote
Smartass button is off.
To purchase a pistol legally in NC you MUST have the following,,,,,
A NC CCW permit OR a pistol purchase permit from the county in which you reside. Period.

Yes that way they know you are legal to buy. I bet they would also take a permit..
Correct.
ATF aint playin right now.
Do it right.

ruger LC9 & ruger LCP are the 2 i carry for personal protection
& the ruger 22/24 lite for target shooting
top LCP .380

I want to do it right, just new to the whole gun world.
Good for you dude.
Go to your sheriff's dept and apply for a pistol purchase permit.
Once you pass the background check, you can get up to three for 5$ a piece. Get three.
Buy a firearm, train with it and take a CCW class.
Once you know the laws, the rest is easy.
Ask any LEO, i speak the truth.

How do they determine which county you live in? My license says Hickory (Caldwell County) but I live in Troy (Montgomery County). Do these permits have an expiration date of any kind or can I go get a pistol at my leisure?

County of residence on your D/L is where you must apply.
Purchase permits are valid as long as the sheriff who signed them is still in office.
IE, he gets voted out the next week then they are no go.
Another reason to get a CCW permit. Good for 5 years and immediate purchase privilages on firearms.

Honestly, get a chromed one. The parkerized is thin, and if you carry IWB WILL rust. I ended up re-finishing mine with engine paint after getting rid of the rust which also got rid of the parkerizing.

It is not a range gun. Light and small, it is very snappy. Not really a good gun to learn with, but an awesome carry piece. They virtually disappear.

There have also been some QC issues with them. I ended up replacing the ejector claw and spring (free from Kel-tec with a phone call ) to cure a jam issue. If you get one, put at least a box or 2 through to make sure there are no problems.

If you're worried about what your buddies are gonna say, delete this thread and ask them what to buy.

Check with your local sheriff's office - most have the info available online too. In Rowan, you can apply for up to 5 permits at a time & they are good for 5 yrs. An application can be filed every 30 days. Go ahead & request the max allowed on the application.

I think I am gonna look into some more .22's. When I get paid next, I will probably go up to the sheriffs office and get 3 permits, then start looking around for something. I guess in a nutshell, I want a gun that I can take to the range and out on my buddies land and shoot while also using it to not carry on me but to have in the house just in case.

Going tomorrow to turn in my application for my gun permit. woop! Now what would be the point in getting more than one?

Also, Someone aboved mention a Ruger 22/45 lite....looks awesome. Anyone give me any more info on that gun? Anyone have experience with it?

Also, my current valid DL doesn't have my current address, although both addresses are in guilford county. Does that pose a problem with applying for the permit?

Must be current adress. If they find out its not and you say it is iirc they can turn you down and possiblr charges for lieing to a police offical. They are super serious on this stuff now.
