Hand gun to start off with

Called the Sheriff's office and lady told me that if my current address wasn't on my current DL, that I could get a Temp card from the DMV, which I assume is just doing an address change at the DMV and I could bring the temp card and my DL that I currently have and that would be suitable for apply for the handgun permit. Today is gonna be my only day off to do so for a little while, but I just hate it because, I am getting ready to move again and my DL exprires in June of this year anyways....

Springfield XD40, I have the 4", there is a 3" sub-compact that is smaller.
I like the Springfields too. I have the XD-40 sub-compact. Shoots great. I looked at the Glocks and they are great but you will pay a hundred or two more depending on the model and caliber. The XD line is available in 9mm, 40 S&W, and .45. They all do the job. The .45 is the heavy hitter at close range, but in a conceal carry gun you're going to have to accept a smaller magazine capacity. 9mm is quite capable with +P ammo and has the highest mag capacity. The 40 is the happy medium and is becoming the most common with law-enforcement officers. The 40 ammo costs a little more, it's the newest caliber over the 9mm and 45 which have been around for decades.
Being new to shooting I would recommend the 9mm. That was my first semi-auto. If your looking at compacts or sub-compacts find a range that will let you demo. Some of the small 45's have tremendous recoil and muzzle flip that take a lot to get used to and difficult to control for an inexperienced shooter in a self-defense situation.

Why don't you just get all of your moving/license stuff settled first? You don't need the permit to shoot and/or shop. Take this time to figure out what you want exactly. Prices are so high right now anyway that waiting a little bit will only help. Rushing will only give you more headaches and possibly a gun you're not happy with.

Yeah thats my plan. I think I am going to just get my Father in law to get me a gun for the time being and once we are moved, Ill get the permit and get my CCW. I think I have narrowed it down to getting the Ruger 22/45 lite. Looks awesome, seems like its a pretty accurate gun and good to learn with.

Just use the address on your drivers license. Why couldnt you do that? Your just wanting a purchase permit right? Get the ccw later.

Well I don't live there any longer. My parents still live there, I just never got around to changing the address on my DL to my new address. But yes, I am just wanting the purchase permit.
