looking at buying a handgun. conceal and carry type. something relatively small but still with KICK  looking for something along the .40 .45 or 9mm sizes. Anyones thoughts and opinions would be appreciated.

Admins pm me if this is off limits and i missed it... so i know for future reference.
thanks

Take a look at the Glock 27, Subcompact .40 Some people don't like the Glocks, I love mine and wouldn't trade it for anything.

Kel tec pf9 fits that description pretty well without being too expensive and not as large/uncomfortable as a glock. Either way, this will be in the garage soon...better buy a red star .!(diamond?)

i have a ruger p345 .45 thats pretty decent its not small by anymeans but you could conceal it and its got a kick about i think i paid like 400 for it

Carry a Glock 27 every day, and I love it.

I own and HK P2000 9mm, but they make a P2000SK. You can get it in .40 SW

Make sure you get your pistol purchase permit!

You just asked a question that will have a lot of good answers. Almost as many opinions as motor oil and religion!
If you gave a budget for your purchase it would be a lot easier to make a recomendation. I personaly use a .32 Berreta Tom Cat for a true pocket gun. With 10 Federal hollow points, it is all you will need up close. Generally 15 feet will be the max you will ever need it for personal defense. I carry a .45 in the car and into motel rooms on the road. The average
.45 cant be dropped into your front pocket like the Tom Cat size guns and that sounds like what you are looking for.

I carry a S&W J frame .38spl every day and love it. Its a model 60. Be sure to get your permit first, lots of good information to be had in the class.

I have 2 different pistols I carry. My favorite is my S&W M&P Compact .40. I also have a Taurus 709 Slim 9mm. The Taurus is thinner and weighs less because 7 9mm rounds weigh a lot less than 10 .40 rounds, so I carry the Taurus mainly if I am wearing shorts. If I am wearing pants, I'll usually have the M&P.

I second the Tom Cat. I too carry mine daily w/ a .40 Sig in the truck. The Tom Cat is a superb little gun mine has never jammed and if a man can still come after you after being shot with it I'd be suprised. There is really no need to carry a big gun. You just need to practice w/ the small gun.

My wife carries a Taurus Titanium .38 special since she cant really pull the slide on any auto. She can shoot/handle this gun along w/ all mine alot better than I can. So if your going to rob her or anything else I'd beware!

X2 on the motor oil and religion comment input! The Tomcat .32 ACP is a good choice for a pocket gun. I have always been a big fan of the Bereta Bobcat loaded with the hi-power .22LR stingers a lot of penetration for a palm size gun. This is my second choice to the Glock 27 when I want true lightweight concealable weapon, I also carry it during hunting season to dispatch deer. I like the double action capability on first shot, which makes first round as a revolver then the other seven shots as semi auto, kinda eliminates need for a safety mechanism to worry about, although you can use the safety if you choose. All of the others mentioned are good choices these are just some I am very comfortable with. And as mentioned before remember these concealable weapons(especially the short barrels and lighter calibers) are for close range. Some of the snub nose revolvers I've shot wern't even accurate at close range.

i've got 10k+ rounds through my XD subcompact chambered in 40S&W and never a problem with it. just recently did a match trigger job on it and its even better.

for hot days and even more concealability i picked up a sig p238. great little pocket gun and even easier to conceal.

just get something that feels right to you and practice, practice, practice. when it counts, accuracy is much more important than caliber.

I carry any one of these three 9mm's and love them all

The XD's print more than the KelTec PF9 so they get a different TYPE of concealment

But the Sub XD works well in a IWB Minotaur But I generally wear a shirt that hangs down below my wallet when I wear THAT rig because it prints.

The Keltec also gets a IWB Monotaur That I absolutely LOVE!! Because it's so thin that I can wear it with shorts and a short t-shirt and no one has a clue

Then there's always the .380 pocket pooter  But when I have that I usually carry the XDm somewhere close.

You can argue "stopping power" and beat your chest all day about caliber. If you can't aim under pressure it doesn't matter WTF you're shooting. Even a tank can't stop a charging man if you can't aim it.

I choose hicap 9mm (16-20 rnds per mag on the XD's) because after a few years of shooting GSSF competitions I realized several well placed 9mm rounds beats the hell out of running out of ammo (7 rounds in a 1911) and having a weight to defend yourself.

I am law enforcement so i am biased to glocks...My personal carry is a 27 .40 cal. make sure ya get the grip extension..makes a big round in a small frame much easier to hold. Now on duty i carry either a S&W airweight .38spl or a rugar lcp .380 on my ankle as a back up..both great guns... just go to a store and put a few in your hand. make sure you get something comfortable for you to hold and carry!

I carry an S&W M&P 45c with all the Apex Tactical goodies in it. Its a little bigger that most compacts but I am bigger than most people so it fits me well. I use a nylon universal holster for SOB carry in the summer and a leather one in the winter (my sweat eats leather).

If you are looking for a new gun check out http://www.ombexpress.com/ (they give discounts for emergency services people) or www.budsgunshop.com for both new and used. I have bought from both places and have been very happy.

My wife has Glock 27 for her CC , I carry a S&W 40c 95% of the time but also carry a Glock 19 at times , all are great and we had no problems with any of them .

Quick question are you Left Handed -or- Right Handed?

Glock 26/27 are nice but really onn't feel great in the hand.. 27 seems to lift a little due to it being so unbalanced but still a great gun.

I used to carry a S&W MP .40Compact and it felt pretty good w/ the interchangable backstraps... and never had one single issue..

the M&P is more ambi due to being able to swith the mag release and slide release on both sides... Glocks are geared strictly towards Right Handed folk.. but it's pretty easy to get used to.

That all said the next CC I pick up will probably be the KelTec PF9...
