I may be a random internet a-hole, but I'm often very specific with my wording for good reason. It's no coincidence that I called it Independence Day instead of July 4th. July 4th is simply marking the date in time on which it occurred, but lacks description of the event and doesn't evoke the same visceral feeling for me as does calling it "Independence Day". A lot of other english speaking 1st world countries (Canada, Australia, India if you consider it 1st world) that were previously British colonies still have a lot of allegiance and respect for their former ruler. While we definitely have a pretty healthy relationship with Great Britain, it's a totally different relationship because we told them we were done, and then fought our way out of it (and then saved their butts in WWII). It's like kicking the bully's butt instead of him just deciding to leave you alone.Matt, I appreciate that you called it Independence Day rather than the 4th. I had some thoughts on that over the last few days, we are not celebrating a random day, but the day on which our country gained independence. i.e., We are celebrating the independence, not the day. I feel like it cheapens the sentiment to call it the 4th. I would presume to abbreviate any other holiday in a similar fashion would get some panties in a bunch. Thoughts?
