Have we already forgotten?

I take great pride in remembering the sacrifices that people make inorder to preserve and save life. As I walk around campus today everybody acts as if nothing happened 16 years ago. It took a few students to remind the administration to lower the flags to half mast in memory of the ones who gave it all to save stranger's.

I don't know if it is the fact my generation was to young to remember when it happened or if they don't understand the significance of sacrificing your own well being just to give the chance for others to survive.

Always remember the sacrifices people made when our country was at its knees.

I'm sorry if you get offender by the American flag being at half mass to honor US citizens and you are an American. You have a problem.

I'll be honest, this morning I didn't even realize today was the 11th. Once I saw the flag at the fire station and my kids asked me why it was half mast, I realized the date and explained to them why it was so important. My kid is responsible for putting the flag up at his school, I didn't see it but hoping he listened to me and put it up halfway.

The key is in your own post

You're at a college. And regardless of the environment of a private Christian college or public, the occupants tend to be the same. (meaning Admin/Staff)

The old saying about college professors at universities is truer than ever: "Those than can; DO. Those that can't; Teach" I've found that statement truer than I wanted to believe of College Professors in my experience. Not so (in my experience) in primary school nor tech school...especially tech because MOST of them DID for years THEN decided to share their knowledge....but almost ALL of the staff and admin I ran into at colleges were useless in the real world. To me...this is another example of them living in their own reality.

Not to be that guy but I will, it's mast not mass and @Blaze your son has one of the greatest honors to be in charge of the colors. To put a newly posted flag at half mast you first raise it to the peak briskly with a moments pause then retreat it to the half staff position before securing the line. Upon retiring the colors in the evening it again is raised to the peak briskly, pausing a brief second before lowering slowly for it to be removed and folded.

I've noticed that at my college. Especially in the Criminal Justice department. One professor has doctorate in criminal justice the other worked as probation officer for 15
years. I prefer the probation officer over the Dr. because she will talk about her field experience and have people she worked with come in and teach certain lessons. Personally it's hard to pay attention to a professor that only has the knowledge from book. The probation officer moved into teaching by starting to teach Basic Law Enforcement Training then moving to a professor position. She runs her class similar to BLET course and it's so much easier to absorb the information compared to a lecture class.

If not you, the Eagle Scout in me would have been that guy

I think the sad fact is it's a matter of apathy and the times we live in. It's not just 9/11...my younger siblings and nieces/nephews barely cover Pearl Harbor or Normandy in school...much less are taught to care about it. As shitty as it sounds, but unless you were at a point in your life where you had a visceral experience with it, it's out of sight, out of mind. Hell, it's been long enough now where conspiracies can safely be discussed without recourse...and we're soft enough as a nation to criticize those that serve and protect, who cares if those are the same folks that did or would be there for a 9/11 type event.

Note, those aren't my feelings, I think it's sickening this even has to be a discussion.

Durring my trail to Eagle i never paid enough attention to the terminology in flag etiquette and other scout skills. I just focused on the proper technique along with the basic skills when I would teach the skills to the younger scouts. Terminology doesn't do any good if you don't have the skills to go with it. Thank y'all for correcting my mistakes and adding to my knowledge.

Exactly why we are arguing over statues and repeating the same ol race baiting malarkey....only its the "other color who is mostly to blame this time around"

And more importantly why whinny twerking twerps will never fully grasp the insincerity and disrespect their attitudes convey when putting down the very basics of our democracy, Flag, and liberties.

I'll say one last thing and be done. This has everything to do with the original statement made in this post. Kids in this generation don't pay full attention to anything. They pay attention to the technique but not the terminology or vice versa. This generation is only interested what gets them by, recognized, advanced, etc. They only pay attention to that which serves their goal. Terminology and techniques are a hand in hand partnership. One without the other is a pointless venture.

My heart always goes out to the above mentioned. It is one of those things that nobody ever thinks about until they're the ones being saved. That goes for military, police, fire, EMS and even linemen. It extends farther than that. When shit gets real, they get ready. Never turn down a chance to thank them.

Today I witnessed the Trail of Tears used in a trivia game, and the synopsis was the "relocation of Native Americans"

Um No. It was a f'n genocide. More like relocation to a mass grave.

All the "masses" seem to care about is their cheetoh bowl and the boobtube

@Keith Odom I applaud you for being so observant of these things at your age. That seems to be a very special qaulity now.

Happy to know you as a friend you will go far sir!

What do they even teach about 9-11 in school these day? I have no idea. But, I will make sure, when they are old enough to do so, that I watch the 9-11 footage with my Grandchildren. It's as close as I will be able to take them to understand what happened that day and how we felt. So many people have given so much since that day.

The later part of my generation wont remember it, I barely remember it. I flew my flag at half staff today and we did at work as well. Also had a moment of silence.

Not much. My girls are in 4th & 5th grade. One had a substitute and didn't mention it at all, the other learned some basics. I talked more about what happened and what my sister/their aunt saw that day (worked at trade center) so they have a better understanding.
