Ok guys I am looking to buy/build me another weekend wheeler. This will not be a DD but I would like for it to be street friendly so I could drive it to work here and there and maybe some on the weekends. I am not looking to do any hardcore offroading with this truck but just an occasional trip to UNF etc. I figure I will do a mild lift to clear about a 33" MT and maybe a rear locker. Now here comes the part where I need help. I have always been a Toyota guy having three 4Runners and three trucks. With that said as everyone knows Toyota's hold their value well which means they can be a bit pricey for a good platform. After looking for the last couple weeks I am now considering.......an XJ simply bacause of the aftermarket support as well as how easily they can be found for a good price.

So I really want either another 4Runner or an XJ so I can take the wife and kids with me if they ever wanted to go. Please help me decide which I should go with and why. I am looking for answers from guys who know about both vehicles and can give me some good advice. Thanks in advance for all of your help.

i had a 4runner and loved it but must say the xj is way cheaper but if u git some 33 they will run under a 2gen 4runner i miss that thing

other get a bronco 33s will fit stock spool the rear and have at it cant beat it for the money

Thanks guys. I am going Sunday to look at an XJ. I am just not sure I can make the switch. We'll see. I will keep everyone updated on my decision.

XJ because you sound like you need a bit of change in your life. If you've always wheeled yotas then why not do something a bit different?

You can put more stuff in 4 Runner. Tough call because the aftermarket for both is huge! I do like an XJ.

Harold, go with what you know. You have yotas in the past, build yourself a runner and be done with. I don't think that you could go wrong either way though.

Cheap xjs are everywhere...The 4.0 and aw4 are bullet proof..The gp out the box..Easy to work on and mod..Cheap parts everywhere...The 4runner has its points also..There a good match.. I would lean xj but im biased..i just dont like the ifs of a 4runner. I dont see you going wrong in xj or runner. Good luck on the search and let us know what you find./

I voted XJ. They are cheap to buy and mod plus no IFS. The stock axles should handle 33's and if they do break, junkyard replacements are cheap and easy to find. Saw 10 XJ's at the junkyard today but not a single 4x4 Yota.

There is a reason for that!

I will be posting pics of my Yota.....when I fond one. I have decided that it will be another 4Runner for sure. Most likely a second generation so it will be easier to do a SAS in the event that I decide to go that route. Thanks for all of the advice and opinions guys.

Picked up my new "project" last night. Pics coming soon! It is nothing special yet but is a Toyota and that is special enough for me. :huggy:

Thanks again for sharing all of your opinions.

Way to dodge the dark side!!! It was creeping in there for a bit.

I see this turning into ANOTHER Toyota vs. Jeep thread.:shaking:

no debate, it sounds like for this purpose an xj would be a better cheaper decision. get a post '97 with a high-pinion 30 and 8.25 rear and it will hold up to 33s and mild wheelin just fine.

stay away from Unibodies!

xj all the way

Heeps suck Toyota's kick ass.

i may like jeeps better but have friends and relatives with toy's. for what this guy wants how is a toy going to work out cheaper/better?

what i mean is there is nothing wrong with a toy. just depends on what you want to do with it.

Looks like to me you already had your mind kinda made up before you posted this thread. But either way they are both have there pro's and con's and are both good rigs. As far as the Unibodies go, it dosent bother me one bit! I dont even waste my time on a body lift when I could throw a suspention lift under there in an extra hour or two.
