Help me pick

I want a set of tires for my 4runner in 265/75-16. I want something more aggressive than normal all terrain (like BFGs) but I don't want a roaring vibrating mess either. BFGs old design MT was perfect but the new one I am not sure about.

Is there a fairly smooth riding mud tire that won't cost $1000? Daily drive-able without hating them? Should I just stick with the BFG AT? Is the quest for a DD mud tire a unicorn? What is the meaning of life......... :shaking:

Well my insomnia may be to blame but the NEW bfg AT looks great. More than just a new sidewall. The second video goes into the tech of the blocks and sipes.
I can get a set under $600 from 4WheelParts and pick up at my local store.
This is a really good price, they are over $750 at Costco.

I have'm in 315/70r17 and they are quiet and aggressive for an A/T

(disclosure I work here at the plant where we make them so i'm partial)
 
I had some used 33 15.50 Superswamper SXs on my Toytruck years ago and it was about unstoppable in mud w open diffs. I struggled a few times before making it up a wet,rutted red clay hill one day while a friend w BFG ATs on a chevy just drove right up it again and again. I have the previous BFG ATs on my truck now and they are showing about no wear at all @ 10k. smooth riding and very capable in anything except deep mud that any tire/axle could have trouble with. The new tire w the sidewall lugs prolly works better than the old ones.

Yeah, I have had several sets of them too. I wanted something with side lugs and the KOs just look so plain.

We actually have the KOs in 33x10.50-15 on our 96 F150 "Lafawnduh"

This new KO2 tire looks very cool. The side lugs should make it better in mud. I know sticky mud is not their thing, but I avoid clay whenever possible LOL.

In my experience, the older ones actually perform well in soupy loamy "bottom" mud we have around Smithfield.

The on road manners and wear are good too. I think i may get the deal from 4WheelParts. Its under $600 for non-noname off road tires.

From watching all sorts of at tires last weekend in both dry and wet conditions the two choices of mine would be the BFG KO2's or the Mickey Thompson ATZ P3's. I'm not sure of the road manners because I've never owned them but I was very impressed with how they handled slick clay. Seemed to do just as well everybody with mud tires. Now if your wanting a mud I've had the KM2's on my dd for awhile and I love them. Yes they are loud but last time I checked most off road rigs aren't yuppiemoblies.
 
Toyo open country extreme A/T. These are the best all around tires I have ever ran. Got around 15 k miles with little wear and hardly any road noise. If I remember correctly they have a 60 k mile warranty also.
 
I've always been a BFG guy, but I bought a used set of the Kelly TSRs mentioned above at a steal. Ran them on my old DD/weekend wheeler ZJ, and I was very pleased. I probably put 15000 miles on them, and still had half tread or better when I sold the jeep. Not sure how many miles were on them when I bought them, but they were practically new.
 
I have a set of Nitto Terra Grapplers on my Ram. I got a good deal on them used and have been very happy with them. Im not a fan of BFG AT's. I had them on my Ram before the Nittos and they did not last very long.

Mine isn't a yuppie mobile either LOL.
I don't want to feel like shooting myself on a trip to the mnts though.

I keep hearing/reading how the KO2 seems to defy AT logic.

On my old 05 Rubicon I had a set of BFG MTs, the old ones. I later put a set of BFG AT KOs on it and I never said much to my buddies about it.....
But I always felt the ATs did as well in every offroad situation and much better on the street.
The main thing, and maybe it was silly, was that they did not look nearly as cool with the plain smooth/ribbed sidewall.

The new KO2 fixes that.

Guys at work bought a few of sets of the new KO2s and love them. One set on a Tahoe and one set on a wrangler and a set on an XJ. They said they have zero complaints and the balanced well. They are relatively recent purchases so no mileage report yet. Not endorsing them as I have never had any luck with BFG sidewalls just passing on info. My vote is Super Swamper SXs in 43" sticky compound and they are well under a $1000 bucks!! (or did you mean for a whole set)
 
Dick Cepek Fun Country or FC-II or whatever they are called now. Had a set and they were surprisingly good both on and off road. Good tread life, ride smooth and quiet, look good.
 
We've got a set of BFG KO ATs on one TJ and BFG MTs (JK take offs) on the other. The MTs suck on wet roads. As much as I want to scorn them, the ATs are probably fine. They rode all over URE in 2wd today. And they've GOT to have better tread life than the MTs :rolleyes:
 
I had a set of 32" BFG ATs on my 4Runner for years. Loved them. Went everywhere my buddies w/ MTs went.
Only issue I had was on 3 separate occasions, I had debris get stuck in the bead, had to offmount it to clean it out. Of course on every occasion, they were aired down a good bit. Not sure if it's something about the bead-sidewall design or what. New ones may be better.

This past week we rented JKs at Moab that had 35" Micky Thompson MTZs. Those there fantastic. beat the shot out of them on the rocks. A little noisy on the road though.

Those the old AT KOs right Shawn?
 
Another vote for BFG AT KO's or the General Grabber AT2. They are basically the same tire. I've owned both sets and have been very satisfied with them on and off road. The grabbers got me from Roanoke VA to Jefferson NC in the snow while everyone else was sitting on the side of the road.

As long as I have my Cherokee, it'll have one of these two brands on it.
