I cut up a tree for my brother today. I am by no means a lumber Jack, but it didn't seem to cut very easily. Made me wonder what it was? Anyone have any knowlege to share? Maybe an oak?

Cool thanks. Does that make it harder? Is the wood worth anything?

No it's still a soft maple. It can be worth more than regular soft maple. I like it, you never know till you saw into it to see all the figuring. Did you save any logs?

That would make nice looking countertops or end/accent tables

I was guessing gum or maple species. Either one splitting is a total pain. Doesn't put off substantial heat. And for what ever it's intended use get it off the ground and covered. Rots and deteriorates quickly with water.

I was gonna say spalted maple. Good for wood turning (bowls, etc). Long logs could have made some nice veneer out of it.

edit: Quick search yielded a price of $274 for a 4x8 sheet if you were to buy some !

Let me know I will pass it on to my brother. He is just going to burn it in his yuppy fire pit in the middle of town....

Nah he went to work at a shop in troutman. Last I heard he was retiring and going to live in an rv with a kegarator.

When did you work there? I've been there since 01.
