Once I get some stuff paid off, hopefully by the end of this year, I am gonna be in the market for a car and park my jeep for the trail/weekend.

I really want an Audi...nothing new but maybe 2004-2007. I really like the A3 or an A4...anyone have any experience with Audi? I want something that is fun to drive and gets good gas mileage but isn't a pain to work on or to buy parts for.

My dad recently bought a 2012 civic and I was possibly looking at getting an older one in the same year range as an audi.

My only thing is...the car has to look cool/fun to drive....I just don't want something that gets me from point A to point B...Don't want hub caps or bland interior...don't need navigation or anything like that but I want something fairly nice.....

That holds true about 99% of the time.
 
The Audi be clubs are great... Good sense of community. The 2.0t cars are fun and car and build good power with a tune and exhaust. Great seat of the pants feel in the Dsg and 6 speed models. Stay away from the slush box autos

This is the truth. I bought a new 07 a4, test drove the manual and decided I'm getting too old to want to shift all the time so I ordered an auto. The turbo lag on the auto's is annoying, plus it doesn't know what gear it wants to be in, then usually ends up in 5th gear while going 30 and the car is bogging down, almost shaking.

I took it back and eventually ended up trading it in 6 months later on a 6 speed. Then I was happy.
They're great cars.
 
Had an 07 vw gti And ran it for 40k mile before I traded it in. Never a problem and I had a bigger turbo and was pushing 450hp at the wheels. Sand thing as a a3 and same motor as the a4

If you buy ANY German car you need $3k in the bank at all time allotted JUST for repairs. VW Audi, BMW, Mercedes all use the same crappy (expensive) parts. If you're on a budget you do NOT need a German car. Not easy to work on, and not cheap to work on, and you WILL be working on it. I've got a 2010 5 series BMW in my bay right now with 35k on the clock with a burnt up tail light assembly. Brakes for German cars work great, but they cost a grand to replace.

Drive one, you won't want to purchase it after that. During that whole cash for clunkers deal I seriously thought about getting a Forte Coupe, and went and took a drive in the sedan since the coupe wasn't out yet. I drove the manual with the SX trim package. It shifted like crap. I couldn't feel anything in that car, and it wasn't as quick as I would have guessed.

Japan seems to have nailed cheap and reliable. toyota or honda. The initial investment may seem a bit high, but over time will make up for itself over not having to throw $300-400 at it every few months.

VW and audis are not bad to work on and pretty straight forward for anyone with half a brain. they do require to be maintained at the correct maintence interivals. The best thing to look for is where it was made by looking at the VIN number. Try to find the ones imported from Germany.

With all that being said. i drive a Kia Soul and it is a fantastic little vehicle. It has hauled axles, hummer tires, and made multiple camping trips to URE. it has the leg room for tall people and has good fuel economy.
 
German made is key the Mexico vws suck. A far as repairs on my car at 43k miles.... None that I didn't cause. I did break the 4th gear sensei in half on a drag strip. They covered it underwarrantee for me at university Volkswagen.

If you want a fun car with great fit and finish get a gti or gli from be or the a3 or a4 from Audi.

A coworker had one that developed a steering fluid leak. The parts alone were an enormous amount of money, let alone labor. He ended up trading it in because of how much it was to work on.
 
My neighbor has one I think he wants to sell.............He's right out of college and just bought a used Toyota Corolla cause he's tired of throwing money at the Audi (I think) , and he's not mechanically inclined. I saw him driveing it (Audi) yesterday. I can check on it if you want it is a 4 door.
 
Some of the Mercedes will self destruct if caliper is pulled off and you just open and close the door. Can't remember which class it is. We have to disable the system with our laptop just to change pads...

I've been quite happy with my 04 VW Passat. Its got over 170k miles, and I've put over 100k on it myself with very little maintenance. All of the maintenance I've done myself, and nothing was particularly expensive except 1 piece of turbo hose.
 
guy at work has some kind of audi sport wagon, probably 2006-8 model, said that purchase was a huge mistake. The rear airbag/shocks/supsension stuff took a dump and for what it cost him in parts, he could've bought a decent Cherokee.
I forgot about his audi until I read the laptop comments above, he said you can't do anything without the laptop connected.

that being said, my bro inlaw as an a3 or a4, no problems, seems alright with it. He doesn't turn wrenches and has the means to pay someone else to.

he had an allroad and they were a carryover till 2006 of the previous generation... the MkIV or 4th generation cars wor notorious for electrical problems and all kinds of expensive interconnected parts. The newer VW and Audi brand cars are simple to work on and you can handle it in your driveway 90% of the time.
 
Our shop is located between Foreign Cars Italia and Scott Jaguar on Tyvola. They should put an Audi dealer in our location, so all the biggest crap pile cars can be purchased on the same block. The old Quatros were awesome for their day... Its been a long time since their day.
 
I might just try to see about getting a civic.....I want something that is zippy....I thought about also getting a Mazda 3....my dad had one and it was really fun to drive and rode really well...it was a 5spd. My father in law just bought a 2008 mazda 3 (automatic) and it is still pretty fun to drive.

I just want something reliable that is gonna last me a long time....the thing with me is....I probably put less than 5,000 miles a year on my jeep as of now....I live near everything that I possibly would need to go to and when I go on vacation, I just rent a car..... or fly.
