How long would you wait?

I recently ordered a part from one of the vendors on this site, and was wanting some outside opinions on the transaction. I've read some pretty bad things on pirate about this particular company, so I was a little hesitant at the beginning, but decided to give them a chance anyway. I'm not naming names because I'm not trying to bash anyone; I'm just curious how others would handle it. Here's the history so far:

4/7 - Send 50% of the payment, with a quote of 30 days or less lead time.

4/30- Send PM asking if we were on schedule for 5/8 still ----No response

5/1- Send PM asking for a response again ---Seller responds it will be a week late

5/7- Seller sends PM says that he could finish it tomorrow if I send the remaining payment now, otherwise it would be done next week. At this point I'm a little leery of sending more money until there's a finished product so I say that next week is fine and ask that he just send an invoice when it's ready.

6/10- Never heard back from seller, send an PM asking about status ----No response

6/12- Send another PM asking for a response or a refund ---Seller responds that mine will "be in the next batch" and will be ready to go mid to late next week.

6/23- Still no response from the seller.

So, almost 3 months later and no product. What would you do?

I'd try and get my refund.

He is now over 2 months past his stated due date. I'd post who it is so everyone else will know who not to do business with.

I'm pretty sure I know who it is. Best of luck to ya. I can't stand a company that's full of liars

You have waited long enough. I would ask for either my product be shipped within 24 hours and provide tracking, or for a full refund of all money paid.

Realizing we are only reading one side of the story.
If accurate, that is beyond unacceptable.

I hoep you will post who so I know who not to do business with.

Vendors need to be held accountable, whether on here or anywhere else. Outing them gives both parties a chance to give their side of the story, and the community info on if we want to do business with them or not.

I've kept all the PMs so far, so I've got both sides of the story available. I understand that things come up, so I'm giving the vendor a chance to correct things without dragging their name through the mud.

Yep, unacceptable.
Post the name so we know the offender.

One note - you waited >3 weeks past when he was supposed to have it done "the next week" to follow up on it (5/7-6/10). Given you were already leary, you should have followed up at the end of that week (teh due date) and started getting pissy then, not a month later.

If the guy is a vendor/fabricator, do you not have a phone number to call until you get an answer? Its pretty easy to ignore PMs.

My point is only that you could have been more aggressive with pursuing this. Unfortunately some people just require constant nagging.

I'm pretty sure it's a company that makes doublers....or under drive boxes. I was looking into them as well till I saw all the bad news and horrible service.

Yeah I could have been more aggressive, but that's not really my personality. I tend to believe that most people, especially people in the 4wd world will do the right thing. I shouldn't have to nag a business owner to do his job. Additionally, by the time I really became concerned it was past the 45 days that PayPal would issue a refund, so my only real option is to hope the seller comes through.

He responded again today saying:
"Ive got a few housings from the supplier and they look good. Shafts are still 10 days away. I can go ahead and send the housing and you can mock up and i can send the shaft next week. Up to you."

I told him to go ahead and send it. I'm not sure how next week is 10 days away, but we'll see what happens

You would think as a business owner you would want to keep your customers informed, but people these days are getting ridiculous. They need to get it through their head that these people are not bill collectors, rather they are folks that have sent you their hard earned money under the impression that they would receive a product in a timely manner. Bottom line is, if you don't have the workforce or the material to keep up with order volume, you need to clearly state that the wait will be extensive or do not freely offer your product like you are some corporation with a billion dollar manufacturing facility. I will reference a vendor from Cherokee Forum. This specific vendor offered a great deal on retrofitted headlamps. As soon as he posted the product he was swamped with orders. Over 100 orders were placed @ $200+. This was 7 months ago and some people have waited 4 months to receive their product. This is totally unacceptable. If you do not have the means to keep up with demand you should shut it down until you are caught up.

nope..... I'd been done and asking for my refund. I think I seen it elsewhere someone was trying to get a refund and the guy didnt even have the money or something like that. Is he being truthful? Maybe. Is he stalling? Possibly. Would I have been requesting my money back and getting my part from another vendor? DEFINITELY! Just my .02.... The "up to you" comment would have made up my mind b/c it really doesn't seem like they care one way or the other.

Maybe I am just impatient, but after the first due date was missed I would have already been irritable, 2nd due date I would have requested a refund and added them to my do not send money list.

So....who is it?

I feel the same way. The last thing he needs is a bunch of naggers calling and preventing work from getting done.

(Edit: This is not directed at the original post, but just a general comment on life today as we know it):
It wasn't that long ago that you would see something you wanted in a catalog or magazine, find the order form somewhere in the middle on stiffer paper, fill it out by hand, tear it out, mail it with a check or money order, and then wait 6-8 weeks for something to show up with no communication at all. No order confirmation, no tracking number, no Paypal email. Just a slip of paper, a check, and a prayer.

I guess back then vendors had a lot more time to work on stuff because they didn't have to spend half the day dealing with the people who wanted constant order status updates.

Stupid naggers.

And that would have been fine. That was the expectation. Where this deal branches off from that path IMHO is
4/7 - Send 50% of the payment, with a quote of 30 days or less lead time.

Heck I routinely sell products that it takes us 16-18 weeks to produce drawings of WHAT we are going to fabricate and then 12-14 weeks to fabricate after those drawings are approved. But we state that up front.

This just doesnt seem right to me .

yeah it dosn't make sense to me either.
Like, "I have a guy in the shop that will do this work tomorrow but only if you pay him b/c I can't even though you already paid. Or, next week some other magical source of revenue will show up that I will pay him with instead of its intended use, or maybe he will just work for free then..."
