If you run a line out from your winch to an object, through a pulley and back to the winch, the total force between your vehicle and the object is doubled.
The same goes if you run the cable out, through a pulley, and then back toward your vehicle but to another immovable object.
This still works even if the angle of the pulley at the far object isn't 180*. If it were 90*, you'd still have the winch's rated capacity times the square root of two (~1.4).
The only time a pulley wouldn't act as a force multiplier is if you were just using it to change the direction of the line, and the object you wanted to move was still at the far end of the cable.

the theory is almost correct,going to a deadman(immovable object) is better cause you take half the weight off your vehicle...if you have 10k of resistance(h2 hummer stuck to door panels) and your truck weighs(my ford for instance) 6200lbs,are you gonna be able to move that h2 with a 10k winch...no,first off your winch might be rated at 10k,your line is XXXX...varies depending on 5/16,3/8,7/16 or 1/2....on my 15 k it has 7/16th...with a breaking strength of 17,200,working load limit is much lower,usually a 4:1 safety factory and also that 17,200 is brand new.

now snatch blocks in a line,the more line touching the snatch block it creates resistance,but the block also reduces line tension...same 10k stuck vehicle,block at the h2 coming back to your vehicle NOW theres 5k on each line,with a 6200lbs vehicle you probably still cant winch it out,BUT if you go to a tree with a strap around it,terminate the hook there now you have 5k to your truck and 5k to the tree,one step further there could be a block at the tree going back to the stuck vehicle...now 1/3 weight is on your truck and 2/3 is going to the tree.

15 years in towing and recovery,multiple recovery and rigging classes with nationally known and certified trainers...trust me it does not double your pulling power.....for instance,my m15 with two snatch blocks,first layer on the drum,brand new cable i can safely winch out 45k right?? 15k winch,30k for each snatch block right....let me know if someones trying it...im gonna go a county or two away
