Hurricane Michael

Walnut Cove.
26 hours no power, high ground but so much rain and ground saturation I missed work keeping the basement pumped out sumps were overwhelmed ..... all friggin' night.

But we were good.

I broke down at my last house an bought a floating electric water pump for when basement flooded( which was wvery big rain) , toss it down in the water hook hose out the window and cord up on ceiling and let it do the work for ya!! My sump pump couldn’t keep up either most the time!

The main sump in the french drain doesn't have a problem keeping up. We added a secondary above ground sump in the opposite corner a few years ago because of 12" of quickly melting snow. It also kept up. we just had to turn it on.
The problem was the pumps don't work when you are out of power for 24+ hours .... and so much water the secondary we added ( which only gets pumped 1-2 a year) was filling up in an hour and a half.
Our basement is also partially living space ..... don't want anything floating!

Damn didn’t think about power outage and yeah when stuff starts floating you usually end up with a lot of work afterwards..

If you have City water, a water pressure driven pump only costs about $100.

I fixed our basement water issues with perf pipe and gravel. Passive solutions are always preferable if you can make it work.

No trees down, but I got a little bit of water.

(note: Dead center of pic, the mouth of the 30" pipe sticking straight up out of the water)

After:

(note: 30" pipe sections to the left, and look dead center of the pic to see where the water ripped that pipe out like a water jet cut it clean across the road)

Looks like a need a ford instead. That float pipe didn't stand a chance. What did Florence do in that area?

Flo did nothing. The 30" was a secondary. the primary is a 48" with concrete on the face plus rip/rap. 30" had riprap but no concrete. I think something got under the 30 and the force of the water ripped it out like Predator ripping out a spine.
I will grade 40-50 before the creek lower to allow a natural overflow ford for the NEXT 100yr flood :shaking:

I heard it's scheduled for 2019, so theres still time, but you better hurry!

Was gonna say, once that pipe floated or got pushed up, it no longer flowed any water. But might not have made much difference. We all saw State roads, with Deeper buried Steel corrugated pipes, Pushed right out! Probably as they clogged with debris. Seems if you get that type flood again, a Bridge might hold. If the Footers do!
