Sounds good to me. If it has been kept up you should get another 115k out of it easy.

Don't do a body lift.
Lock the rear, cut the fenders, run some 33's.

X2!

Start wheeling. If you don't have fab/mechanic skills, you will develop them quickly and can take the truck to the next level when you are ready.

If you drive the 94 Yota, and like it, then buy it.

^^^^^ That is a joke.......right.:shaking:

Ummm..No its not. Are you going to tell me that A Wrangler is not streetable and able to hit the trails? Really???

"i want to build mild cheap rig what 4x4 would you buy"

That is what was asked by the OP in the first post. Wranglers are cheap enough. They are a great platform to buil on. If my memory is still working they do pretty damn well off road.

I'm not saying wranglers are bad, but to spend all your budget and have a 4cyl wrangler on 31s. Doesn't sound like too good of a deal.

You cannot build a cherokee, the unibody will fold like a taco and turn into a super-massive black hole the moment you slip a tire. Any money you throw from that point on will end up in oblivion. :D

(Implied Sarcasm)
If you want cheap and reliable, the only vehicle you can possibly squeeze into a sentence using those two words is "toyota".

I've built a cherokee, and while my application may be more than you're talking about, I can vouch for them being super expensive. A straight axle toyota is much cheaper than an XJ and more reliable (Even if you buy ifs and convert). I've seen stock birfields (with drivers that aren't idiots) handle tire sizes that the puny d-30/8.25/35 combo, bottom-line, can't. 35's and stock shafts is do-able, whereas on the Jeep, I wouldn't dare. Plus....swapping in longfields is cheaper than a full blown axle swap - ask me, I know (as upgrading a 30 is probably not a "reliable" choice).

From the XJ side, if the biggest tire you're wanting to try on a dana 30/chryco 8.25 combo is a 31, then lock it and wheel it (you are looking at lift prices here, the toy requires no lift for this size, or maybe even 33's with a bit-o-trimming). If you go any bigger, say a 33, you'll probably be okay with a super light foot. Any thing bigger, both axles aren't going to make it long (maybe to the first turn in the trail). Take into account however that with a 33 and bigger, you're looking at really getting into money with the required amount of lift: SYE (MUST), driveshaft, adj. trackbar, control arms, etc.

---A Toyota on 33's is good to go, as would probably be 35's on a light foot (locked).---

Just my opinion and experience.
Also want to throw my cherokee expertise in fellows. I've wheeled cherokees for 12 years on stock D30 and D35 on 36inch TSL and just now my biggest jeep ever on 39.5iroks and still in 12 years never broke anything. It's not about the stupid axles of jeeps or yotas or D60 and 80 or rockwells or any of that matter. ITS ABOUT KNOWING YOUR RIG AND ITS CAPABILITY, WHEN TO SPIN AND NOT TO SPIN, HOW TO CONTROL YOUR RIG WITH YOUR SETUP, AND BIGGEST OF ALL LEARN HOW TO DRIVE YOUR RIG WITH WHAT IT HAS AND FOR WHAT IT IS. 12 years ago i learned what cherokees could do and could not do and nowadays, i know i can run 38s on a cherokee stock axles and auto trans with stock gears and go anywhere on the trails with guys on D60 cause i know how to handle a cherokee better than most people cause after 12 years, heck i know what it can and can't go through. So not to sound rude but i think people really should stop telling newbies that jeeps suck cause i would put my cherokees up against any yota, ford, chevy, dodge and others and say lets have fun and enjoy the sport and admire each others rigs instead of putting another down. thats my 2cents. thanks and buy whatever you feel led to buy and enjoy it and make it YOURS.

That's a heck of a rant in a really old thread. However, I stand by all of my advice. I bet the op never got anything. Insanemoto.... laterz....

HOLY 4 YEAR OLD THREAD BATMAN!

Lol. Whoever said buy somebody else's had it right. If I wanted a disposable offroad toy there is usually one a week on here or CL for about 3k or less. We should convert this to the "newbie toy of the week thread" and post up the poor rigs that people are liquidating for pennies on the dollar of what they've invested and or time they've poured into them.
