Ideas to help URE trail system.

Would a sticker on our rigs that said " tread lightly on our trails" be of any help? Just thinking if people think that the majority of people want to use the trails right, then maybe people will want to fallow suit. I say this because last year I was in the big parking lot airing down and some younger guys came over to talk to me, one had a drink and as if he thought it would be cool, throw the can in the woods. I said " hay man don't do that! There is a trash can right there, hell put it in my truck, but not in the woods. Now go get it!" He went and got it. And then his friends started in on him, people always say "you are who you run with"

I got to thinking about it earlier today. There are diamonds on the trees to mark the trail. There are numerous places where the trail sort of splits and comes back together near or at a diamond and doesn't really designate which lane to take. What if diamonds where colored red for the left hand side and say blue for the right.. alternating along the trail on trees closest to the edge of the lane? That way when you see a diamond, you know which side of it to be on and can stay in the appropriate lane of travel.

That would work, would also be nice for them to be labeled with the trail number as well.

Something simple everyone can do is post the rules that apply to the OHV trails to facebook. Even if only once a month, just as a reminder. If 10 people who like or share it then all their friends see it and so on and so forth. An easy way to reach a lot of people. Just an idea.

And it doesn't just help uwharrie but every OHV trail system.

Has anyone ever looked into getting NC License Plates with Uwharrie on it? It could easily be done with the Friends group, or it wouldn't take much to form a non-profit, create the tag, and use the proceeds to fund trail maintenance, education, etc... Has this ever been considered?

We have a state parks tag on the tracker. We asked about a uwharrie one they said all they had was the state parks one.

Isn't that all State parks? I was thinking about a tag that specifically served our cause.

And I do see that is all they have available. However, I recently was a part of an alumni group that got a tag created through the state. It's really not that hard. From what I understand, pretty much all that is required is that you be a licensed non-profit, and show interest in the tag. The alumni group was required to have 25 people submit paid applications for the tag before they would create it. I just thought it would be a popular item - to have a Uwharrie tag, and I'd bet that there would be a lot of people that would purchase it.

I'd be interested in one of the tags if you wanted to take lead on it.

At our last race in Dayton they had wood chips( like straight out of a wood chipper) on the corse. When asked about them we where told they where for erison and land protection. They claimed it helped keep the section from getting worn. I offered this up to Ranger Walker and you could see the light bulb go off as a possible tool for us to use.

A 4'x8' sign at the head of each trail saying "THIS TRAIL TO CLOSE"... THEN A BRIEF EXPLANATION THAT RIDING OFF TRAIL, LITTERING, ETC, HAS CLOSED ROCKY MOUNTAIN LOOP AND THIS ONE WILL FOLLOW IF EVERYONE DOES NOT DO THEIR PART IN ADHERING TO RULES AND REPORTING ABUSERS.

I can get an abundance of them. As a matter of fact I have a pile 8 ft tall sitting in my yard right now.

Btw i asked Chris Cagle if a booth at the outpost was possible and he said please do. So the ball is in our court...

cool stuff guys, our biggest problem is enforcement. Even with self "policing" where do we get the authority to carry out punishment or reprocussive (if thats a word) actions. Most people who are blatent rule breakers are the ones who will quickly esculate things. Things, that I with my family do not want to get mixed up in. Reporting without evidence turns into he said she said. Be nice to hire new FS people just for this. Higher ups say not in the budget! So is their any form of outside agency we could hire from? Maybe off duty Leo's? Or incourage every one to carry a GO PRO camera and film objectionable activities. Would this be enough for the FS Officers to work with and deal with them? (Which I think is still their job and one if not the most important reason for their employment...) Putting the ball in our court is great but short of creating a militia inforcement will not occur. Education is great but sadly enough rules and knowledge want outweigh stupidity!

Maybe a UNF Mafia, legs broken deeds done "dirt" cheap." Seriously how do "we" enforce what's alreay present? If that gets done half the problem goes away and routine maintenance becomes minor.

What about requesting a dui check point on the gravel road( a lot closer than the nornmal at the 109 entrance)? Is it possible for the county sherriff to help in this??

I think there should be a main point of contact for us all along with a printed or easy to find list of objectives for 2013 (thjnk of a 'to do' style list and not a vision for the future). Right now we are talking about both. I'd like to know what we can do immediately to start to get the ball rolling, other than the once a month work days. The trail system isn't up to what the USFS wants. What do we need to do to get it there?

I know a lot are doing what needs to be done. I'd like to see the FOU be the main POC to the USFS so that they can get insight as to what needs to be done and then to pass it along to us. I have no idea how feasible this is or if they or anyone else is willing to do it. I'd love to attend meetings and all, but with work and time, I will probably have to miss most of the FOU meetings but would like to be informed on their progress and ideas and input from the USFS. I know that us as individual clubs sponsor individual trails. In the past, I have spent most of my time on 'our' trail, Dutch John, but honestly I don't even know what all needs to happen to it, or any others.

All the ideas so far are good ones. I too am at a loss as to how to report violators. I don't know how to contact officer Foote, or even what the entire rules are. I was told (by a Ranger) at one work day a few years back that alcohol IS allowed, but not while driving. That said, I saw a big sign that said 'no alcohol' near Art Lilley... Maybe I need an education on the whole shebang. I'm up for it, but I need some direction.

They have license checks all the time so DWI is just another violation that they can and do check for. Just be sure to have your registrations up to date on your trail rigs! lol

I want a sticker that says "I will report you & your vehicle for being off trail, littering & especially drinking on the trails"

I've noticed that lots of folks on this board want to enforce the rules by using costly alternatives. Don't forget that nobody likes snitches. If you see someone doing something wrong, either they are ill informed or they're a scumbag. If they are ill informed, I'm sure they'd appreciate some friendly words of caution. If it's a scumbag, they'll immediately think that you're ratting them out on the radio. When this select few morons start to realize that the mountain is full of snitches, they'll find somewhere else that is easier for them to be stupid.
Best thing about this is that it doesn't cost anything. It could only look good to the FS, showing that you folks are standing up for what you care about.

Trust me. I do not want to have anybody spend any money to fix stuff. Had a good chat with a few people out there yesterday, and hopefully we can talk Tread Lightly again here soon to more people. Trying to get some helpers for this up on the trails / at the Outpost.
