i am off work today and getting the Jeep ready for the CTB Fun Caravan this weekend. I am cleaning out the glove box and I can’t find my new registration card. I go and look on my plate, and yep, the sticker says 04-18, so I am way past due.

So how screwed am I going to be? Penalty? Fine?

late fee...I think its a like 15$ for right after the lapse...and now, talking 3 months... I assume you did not have it inspected when it was due correct?...you should still be able to have it inspected, and pay online., print it and still be able to drive it

DANG CLAY!!

I think there's a 90 day penalty...but I can't remember. I think I went past 90 days once and got slapped with like $125 fine or something. Log onto DMV.org and punch in the last 5 of the title and tag to see

Just call the tag office and ask them. I have heard them ask people many times if its "been parked or have you been driving it" Not sure if that works with the more automated crap they have now.

i usually just go in and tell them i was rebuilding the tranny and want to put it back on the road. new tag and go
Bingo. What do new tags cost?
Go in and schmooze with the lady at the counter a bit, you know she's bored and tired of dealing with assholes, tell her the vehicle hasn't been driveable so you couldn't get it inspected, but now you want to do the right thing and get it back on the road. Ask about her kids that she has a picture of right there...
Worst case it may be cheaper to get new tags and start over than to pay any fines.

Here in MD I've had multiple occasions where I missed an emissions inspection due to it "not being drivable" and they just gave me a 6 month extension.

My Ram goes past due every year because I am slack and drive it once a month. I think it was due in May. I never have a problem at the DMV.

I just went through this with my ranger, if you tell them you haven’t been driving it then it’s just the late fee. I was thinking mine was $25 but I could be wrong.

no grace period anymore, and its harder to get out of the late fees.

Registration Renewal Late Fees

Although an individual can legally operate their vehicle up to 15 days after their registration expires, the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicle charges a late fee up to $25 on all registration renewals paid after the vehicle's license plate expires.

Length of Plate Expiration Fee
Less than one month $15
1-2 months $20
Two or more months of $25

Official NCDMV: Vehicle Registration Renewals

IIRC when you are late they date your tag from the last time it was current. So I would say its probably cheaper to turn in your old tag, and get a new one.

Inspection first then pay the tag. My brother went an entire year without paying his tag and got 1 inspection then paid for 2 years at once.

They'll also charge interest on the property taxes or something like that. Ends up being more than the penalty. We're the government and we're here to help.

I went in and told the lady the truth. I just forgot. She then said, so you've been working on it?

......... uh........ sure.

No late charge and I got a new tag :huggy:

just remember the Ladies at tag office get yelled at everyday for things they cant help. They hear every sad story repeated every day , They can only do so much by law .
I see tag office ladies once a month and always take them donuts or a pizza . never have to wait in line or pay fines :)

So seems like $25 late fee, that not too bad. This is a personalized plate, so turning it in is not an option. Looks like it is off to get inspected next week.

Wife's car was 11 months late, my car 8 months late...go get inspected, hop online to pay taxes...there will be a fee line item, it's capped per month/annually. I was fined $70ish for one and $50ish for the other. Not sure at what point they'll take your plate though.
