Whatever jackass owned one of my rockwells before me was a total fawkin hack. I guess the welder was closer than the wrench, or the concept of getting a fine-thread nut was toooo far beyond him.

There's a stud that has no nut on it at all.. it's literally welded to the third.

Ideas to get it out?

1: chisel through it?
2: Sawz-all through the weld and the stud, then chisel the rest off?
3: File down the weld enough to get wrench flats onto it, and try to remove the stud with the blob attached?

It doesn't look like the weld really penetrated the cast third member housing at all.

Any ideas are welcome. Also there's a nut under the third that's rounded off and tight as hell.. vice grips just keep slipping. Can't get a box-end on it, can't get a nut splitter in there either...

I would cut it off if possible. Then go from there knock it out or something like that. I have never worked on a rockwell but I have taken a third member out of a 9" a few times.

if the housing is CAST, use a torch. A torch won't cut through CAST (it will melt it, but not cut it). A torch can damage cast if you are not careful. If the housing is forged, then torch will cut through it and you must be even more careful.

if your good with an arc gouge or x2 on the cut off wheel & a punch if there is room for the wheel if not a carbide tip on a die grinder--- try to keep any heat away from the housing

cut off wheel - good, I have one of them.. :) - will do on the exposed welded stud.

The nut under the third member, however, I doubt I can reach even with the 4.5" grinder with the cutting wheel.

could you weld something to it to keep it from spinning?

Tourch the one under the 3rd off. Then after u pull the 3rd u should be able to remove the stud with vice grips.

Need the sawz-all first before I can get to the nut under the third member overhang. The hack saw actually looks like it could work without too much trouble, my blade is just too dull.

The exposed one was no problem. I have to replace ~8 studs anyway, what's 2 more?

without seeing what you have, as I have never worked on a rockwell I would say weld a nut to what you have exsposed, and heat from a torch on the area around the threads.

Can't weld anything to it - It would never make a full revolution.. cramped quarters in there, can't even get a box-end on it.

I'm just gonna cut the bitch. :)
