Here is the plan for the day
EDIT!!! updated from Terry
Hi Everyone – Jeff & I went out Wednesday and flagged sites and made notes. We’re going to concentrate on Daniel Trail, Dutch John Trail and Wolf Den Trail if we have enough folks. Also, if we have some folks with their chainsaw stuff there are some trees and logs that need to be bucked up. We got a few of them yesterday because we needed to in order to pass through the trails we were on but they could be cut back some more.
1.Daniel Trail at the mud hole that is on a curve in the trail (where there is split rail fencing on one side of the trail and guardrail on the right side) – Replace one long piece of guardrail here that was mangled by a large tree. Pull logs out of mud hole and the tail ditch at the far end of the mud hole and dig out the tail ditch to let it drain. Don’t need any new posts here just need 1 long rail.
2.Daniel Trail after the mud hole going toward Daniel Mt. there is blue and pink flagging on the right side of the trail where people are driving off the tail ditch for a rolling dip and looping around . Put up a total of 3 long pieces of guardrail. Put 2 long ones together w/ 3 posts and then at the tail ditch put 1 long guardrail up with 2 posts about 20 ft off trail in the tail ditch.
I will also be filling in the blanks with crews for these projects, if I don't get someone on a spefic crew we can work them in sat morning, so don't feel left out....
3. Daniel Trail at the top of the mountain on the backside where people are driving off to camp and then to make illegal trails we’re going to install 4 long pieces of guardrail & 1 short piece & 7 posts tying in with boulders, etc. to limit access of the backside. We didn’t put up any flagging because either Jeff or I will be up there and we have to be a bit flexible one where to install them with all of the rock up there.
4. Daniel Trail at the bottom of the hill climb that is below Daniel Mountain and between the lower ledge & the top of the mountain the old switch back where we’ve blocked it off with logs & signs in the past. Install 1 short piece of guardrail with 2 posts across the roadbed that comes of the very sharp switchback on Daniel Trail. We do have pink flagging at this spot on a small sapling next to the large logs that have been moved out of the way. Ignore the older pink flagging and stakes that were put up by the folks figuring out the drainage repairs we need to do there.
5.Dutch John Trail – I put up some pink flagging at the rocky area to mark where it’s ok to take rock from to use for armoring the stream crossings. We’ll slowly (over the long term) remove and replace the log crossings with either rock armoring, culverts, bridges or reroute the trails away from the stream crossings on all of the OHV trails. For this weekend work on hauling rock from the area flagged with the double pink flag on one small tree & another long single pink flag about 20 ft up from the trail and along that hillside for about 1,000 to 1,500 ft along the trail there is plenty of rock on the trail, immediately adjacent to the rail and uphill from the trail that has been cleared to be used. Haul loads of rocks to the different stream crossings that have log corduroy crossings and pile the rocks off to the side of the trail but still close by to use for armoring the crossings. We can start taking the bridges apart this weekend too. Use wrenches to undo the cable clamps & the cables and take them apart. Put the logs off to the side of the trails for now. Keep the cable clamps, nuts & bolts & any good/decent cable & bring them out to return to Jeff & Terry for reuse elsewhere. (Ask Broncos if they can wench out large boulder exposed in the hill climb at the Slab Pile end of Dutch John Trail.)
6.Wolf Den Trail – We need 1 post installed where we put up guardrailin the past to block illegal ATV use of the horse trail that crosses here. It’s at the intersection of Wolf Den & Falls Dam Trails. Also, take the log crossing apart and we’re going to armor this one with rocks too. The cable is already slack and getting loose. We can haul rock from the same area flagged on the Dutch John Trail. Put the logs off to the side of the trails for now. Keep the cable clamps, nuts & bolts & any good/decent cable & bring them out to return to Jeff & Terry for reuse elsewhere.
7.Chainsaw Crew – We’d like to have a crew of 2 or 3 chainsaw certified people work together and buck up and cut back fallen trees, check on widow makers, cut over hanging / encroaching branches along the trails. We’re only opening the Dutch John Trailhead (Double Parking Lot) so you’ll only access the trails that you can get to from this trailhead and you’ll need to come out at this trailhead too.
Thanks a lot everyone. Again bring appropriate clothes for the weather, have work gloves & boots, food and water. Bring tools, shovels, straps, D rings, sledge hammers, ratchet sets, rock bars, trash bags as there is always litter to pick up, etc. A big batch of Brunswick Stew awaits us at 3pmat Double Parking Lot when we’re done and then Jeff & I can gather up all of the Forest Service tools and supplies from everyone. We will need some folks that can haul long & short pieces of guardrails & the 6 ft posts onto Daniel Trail. I have some of the cable & the “L” shaped steel brackets we made for hauling them put if you have stuff that would work for hauling the guardrail please bring it. We’ll meet at the Uwharrie Hunt Camp at 9 am and determine who’s getting the guard rail from Arrowhead Campground, who’ll be doing the chain saw work, etc. and head out from there.
Keep your fingers crossed that it is sunny, dry and at least the 45 degrees that’s predicted.
Bye - Terry
