Somehow my wagoneer got up to 70mph, and i have the official paperwork to prove it! Damn.

Anyway, insurance company says it will jack up my insurance since this is my second ticket in a year. When i lived in Fla, you could take a safe driver's course and avoid getting the points on your license. Does anything like that exist in NC?

yes, but I would thuink you would have been offered that when you got your frist ticket. I'm not sure how it works on the second one. I think you can only take the course once every so many years. Or at least that's how it used to be. I haven't gotten a ticket in quite some time.

Knock on wood. I'll get one on my way home today!

There's no point in taking the defensive driving class ahead of time, it will be part of legal wheeling/dealing. I wouldnt do this alone, always get a lawyer.
In NC, there is a time limit on how often you can take the class. First one is 4 hrs, then there is the (advanced lol) 8 hour session if you're within the time limit. I've got at least 20 hrs of driving reward training

you should be able to take the defensive driving class. it's like an 8 hour gig or something like that. it reduces your ticket to inproper equip. no points, no ins. rate hike. in wilmington, you go to court on your day and tell the DA you wanna take the class, they continue your court date and you have until then to go. it cost something like $160 or so.

the two times i went, they walked out in the waiting room and announced anyone who wants to take the class get in the line, they sign you up and you were on your way.

you can take it once every 3 years.

Go up.to the courthouse and go through the line talk to the Ada they can generally drop the charges for you. I've had plenty of tickets dropped in the line at the buncombe county courthouse.

Thanks for the help, guys!

To answer a few questions, the ticket was issued in Buncombe county. There's a state patrolman who uses my stretch of 25-70 as a regular fishing hole. Unfortunately, i got caught not paying attention.

This is my first NC ticket ever. The prior one was in Johnson City.

iluvmud, have you gone to see the ADA prior to your court date? Or on it. Also, what sort of discussion have you had with them to get them to drop the charges? i.e. reason for speeding, reason why it would be thrown out anyway, mechanical failures?

On your court date there will be a line of about 100-150 people waiting in line an Ada will go through the line and look at your ticket and if its nothing severe they will ask about your driving record if its say15 over they generally reduce it to 9 over no points on license or they can drop it. If It's 9 over that'll be stupid easy to get dropped. Expect to get multiple letters from lawyers offering there services I've only used lawyers on my bigger charges when I was young and dumb.

I'll never not get lawyer or take the class again. 1 ticket for 4 over, 1 ticket for 9 over = 3 yrs of paying more then my 17yr old sister pays (rents). My jaw dropped when I found that that the ins company would pick up on my low paid off tickets. Never again!

This thread sure shows there's a lot of no driving MF's here....:flipoff2:
Nope we are all great drivers and the cops love giving us great driver awards

Well when I lived in MD from the time I got my DL I had tickets. I have had over 100 tickets in MD . I got off on most of them through a technicality. I deff payed through the nose for ins for a while . then I calmed down it usually goes about 3-4 years when I get another ticket . Since I have been in NC i always use a lawyer . I have figured out here in NC it is a big Money racket for the small county's to make money.
Most of the MD tickets were for over weight and street racing.
I did have my DL suspended in MD twice for points

1st ticket in NC go see the DA. He'll immediately drop the speed to 9 over. 1 DL point. NO ins points. (There IS a difference) It'll cost you court costs ($120 or so) and a (probably) $10 fine. A lawyer will do this exact thing for twice the price. Second ticket in NC (in 3 years) go see the DA He'll immediately drop it to 9 over. Go before the judge and ask for a PJC. This time you only pay court costs, no fine. I have done this very thing a number of times. You'll spend probably 2-3 hours there if you get there early in the AM.

I watched a DA drop a 30 over ticket (not mine) to 9 over without blinking. They really don't care how much over the limit you were, they just want your $$ for court costs.

in my experience as well.

My dad is on his 3rd speeding ticket in about 4 months or so....Driving class made the first go away, and his good lawyer made the other 2 go away.
