Here's a few 3D screenshots of a front bumper I'm building for a customer's K5 Blazer. Since he is wanting to run a Warn 8274, the biggest challenge was building enough structure to support the winch without it looking goofy. The winch is 9" deep, but there was only 3" of frame to work with. I think it is looking good so far. There will be D-ring's coming off of the 1" solid beams that run front to back, I haven't drawn them in.

Feel free to give me any feedback or suggestions.

Mods feel free to move if another section is more appropriate, but it didn't quite seem tech.

I'm curious to see how this turns out. I've got an 8274 and a K5. I've often wondered what would be the best way to combine the two. Looks like you're figuring it out! I want pics when it goes on. Looks good so far, though.

set the winch back in the grill some and gain some approach angle. owning a 75 jimmy there is just too much out front as it is

I can only gain about 1.5" by doing that because of the radiator, oil cooler, and PS cooler. For simplicity and cost's sake, Im trying to keep it all outside the grill, but I have clearance to remove the grill if needed.

Looks great. One possibility: Change the 1" beams to tube. It might look a little more trick and may be cheaper than the 1" sheet. Just a thought. Would make the d rings a challenge though.

I like incorporating angles into the winch support. If the winch is pulling from an extreme angle left or right, sometimes straight supports don't like that. But the bumper is stout.

personal seat of solidworks?
Indeed

The customer is supplying the 1" plate because he got it for really cheap. Tube would be a good idea were it not for the d-ring mounts, and I may find another way to work some in now that you gave me the idea.

The angles will definitely stiffen it up on a side pull. I didn't draw them in, but I will probably add some gussets between the front plate and the bottom plate right beside the winch.

Looks good! I need to reinstall SW on my home computer. Lost it in my last HD crash. :(
Thanks. What version did you have? Im still running 2005, but it works. They added some really nice sheetmetal features in 2009 that would have made this even easier to draw.

I like it alot, I wheeled a 1ton burbon with a 8274($499.95new) one way we kept the aproach angle was we ditched the roller fairlead and fabbed one out of 1inch COLD rolled bar! Lot's of winching and retrieving other 4X4's and after years it still looked good, fairlead that is. Mild bar will groove out and dom will also, especially on a K5 as heavy as they are. Over all I like the design big time. keep us posted on progress.

I had 2007, with the sheetmetal add-on. I love SW, but don't use it at work anymore. I'm certified and have been using it since 2001. I'm dangerous with that stuff. I've drawn everything from a complete custom air handling unit with piping and all to a Trident class submarine valve. :)

Big ballin to drop $3k+ on software

-didnt see the 2005 note, I know the 2009 subscription is $1500 a year to maintain support (work)

Looks nice Matt. My old winch should look good sitting on top of that thing.
Yes it will. I really like how light the 8274 is with rope instead of cable.

Yeah, I'll weigh it. I've got an 8274 with 150' of cable on my TJ, and its got be 150lbs or so. With the rope on this one, I can pick it up and carry it around no problem.

Looking forward to seeing the finished product, are you going to be adding any tube work? Do you have a time frame for the completion?

I've been waiting on the bigger material, but it came in today. Hoping to have it mounted this afternoon and finished tomorrow. There are plans for some future tubework, but not with the current round.

I want weight differences. It'd be nice to get it down below 100lbs! Do you have a scale you could put it on?
It is 74 lbs with the rope on it. The roller fairlead with plastic rollers is another 8 pounds. A hawse would certainly be lighter.

Ready to start:

Stuff looks great so far.

74 lbs?!? That's like 40lbs lighter than the listed weight of the winch with wire on it! I didn't realize it was that much of a difference. I'm gonna have to consider that.

are you cutting and bending all that? looks clean, and time consuming...
I can't claim that the cutting and bending is mine. I have the parts laser cut and bent by pros. I could do it, but the time would be much greater, and the finished product wouldn't be as nice or accurate.

Progress Pics

Got the D-ring mounts cut, fitted, and drilled today. Then tacked everything together.

Tomorrow I will make up the corner plates, finish the welding, and get it all painted up.
