Let's discuss fire extinguishers for a trail rig

Need to add a couple fire extinguishers to my buggy. Was wondering what everyone else was using in their trail rigs? Standard 2.5lb and 5lb ABC extinguishers? FIREADE, Element or other small "can" style extinguishers?
 
I have a 5lb and an element. I use the 5 lb unless is was in the interior then using my element. Element is more expensive to replace but easier to clean up.
 
I would disregard rhetoric and look at real world evidence

I would also not trust an element just because it goes longer, there’s not enough material in it to smother

I carry a halotron and 2 of the little kiddie dry chemical ones in the jeep. If I have to put out my own fire, I'll use the halotron. If somebody else catches fire, I'll hand them the dry kiddie. 🤣
 
5lb ABC on the top of the drivers rear inner fender. Easily accessed by myself if I jump out or a bystander. Going to put a 2.5lb on a quick release on the cage between the driver and passenger heads within reach of being belted in.
 
5lb amerex ABC dry chem in the bed of my truck, if I need a fire to be out, I want it out as quickly as possible and dry chem is the most effective at that. After being part of large fire extinguisher procurement project at a previous job, I'll pay they extra couple bucks for an industrial type extinguisher like amerex or buckeye.
 
I run a couple simple Kiddie brand ones. I have replaced them over the years because they were one use, and done. But they did what needed to be done. (so far always on someone else's rig) The ones I have now are rechargeable. Best advice for what ever you get, is make it very accessable, with a quick release type holder.,
 
I have some fireade stuff. Switching it out for some "real" ones soon.
Especially after watching this video.
 
Like @LBarr2002 , I carry a HalGuard 2.5 pound arms reach from driver and passenger. Also have a MaxOut Dry Chemical 2.5 pound mounted on the tail of the buggy. Both on quick pull pin mounts. Both extinguishers come from

No, they aren't cheap, but last time I checked, neither are fires.

I too have seem some pretty compelling evidence that the elements just don’t cut the mustard. Opted for an Amerex ABC until I see a reason to go elsewhere

Get with me before you buy next time....those are just rebranded from another manufacturer and can be purchased quite a bit cheaper than those.
 
ABC will do anything you need. But if you have the funds a halotron inside the cab will save a lot of cleanup in the case of an electrical fire. We’ve been in this business for 20yrs. I currently have about 200 2.5lb abc from a job we did and would give a couple to any NC4x4 member that wants to drop by my office and grab one.

I have a 2.5lb Halotron in the cab and 2.5lb ABC on both back roll bars. All on aluminum quick release brackets. The $20 ones on Amazon have been tested on our race team SXS in King of hammers and performed great. Just have to locktite the pin and knob on.

I'll try to make it out there sometime to grab a couple of the ABC extinguishers and buy one of the halotron units.

The prices they have on their website now are easily double what I paid for mine initially (pre COVID). But now that I own them, they’re refillable, and should last me quite a while. I’ll definitely keep you in mind for the future though. Who doesn’t like saving money?

We can fill them as well, always happy to help out a fellow NC4x4 member.
 
I'm w/ others, have a Haletron within immediate reach and 5 lb standard ABC elsewhere.

Also along w/ the extinguidher - think seriously about the monting and release method. I like the mounts that you attach to teh can that give a really secure 2-point connection where 1 is a hook-in and the other is a pin you can pull out. E.g. pull the pin and hinge it outward for it to come off.

The $25 aluminum quick release bracket on amazon has done amazing for us.

Not trying to discredit anything but this is pretty much exactly how Element explains not to use their extinguisher.

I have both an Element and 2 ABC's, all in quick release mounts.

For a small interior fire they’re likely ok, but I wouldn’t only have an element which is what a lot of you tubers are promoting. For minor fires they’re probably ok. I did not see any way he could have done better with the element and he was really close in a fire suit I would assume distance would make it less effective
