Let's talk suits...

Too far for you, but might be a lead for someone down this way. For years, I have bought suits at Ashworths in Fuquay. Old school men's store...our last one in town closed up many years ago. They got some decent stuff.

I really need to figure out how to post pics...

Come to Blustiens in Charleston... They will straight, fix you up. You will stand out like a new penny. They will get a sharp ass suit fitted to whatever shape you are. Bet they can get a hat and a sweet ass cane to match too

Too late, they done shut down for good. Shoulda pulled the trigger on that blue velour track suit when I had the chance....

I appreciate quality, so what should I pay for a "good" suit plus tailoring?

......another reason I can't wear suits is because women swoon all over me when I wear one. It didn't matter if it was prom night, weddings, funerals or formal parties, many women were wanting to jump my bones. It was not as much fun after I was married.

I could see where that would be especially problematic at family functions.

I don’t think anyone would point and laugh at you if you got yourself a $500 suit from Jos A Bank and spent another $200 getting it altered. That’ll get you a decent brand name, still probably fused panel jacket. I feel that price range exponentially improves seam tuck and cloth quality over a $2-300 jacket/suit.

2 things I wish I knew when I was single and searching: Wear a suit, and walk a dog. (not necessarily at the same time).

It really depends on what you want. The halfway decent stuff you can buy off a rack is okay (thinking the Jos A. Bank, etc. here) and will work fine for what it sounds like you're needing (hell, I have a couple myself), but if I were looking to buy a suit right now I'd damn sure be going to see Wally at Myers Park Tailors in Charlotte. If you're wanting a good quality suit and are willing to spend a little more for MUCH better quality you won't be disappointed. Dude is a super nice guy, really knows his shit and makes a damn good suit (and jackets, etc. for that matter). You will spend a little more (prob. more than $500 but less than a grand) but the quality will be well worth it. If you decide to go see him, just ask him the difference between an off-the-rack suit you can buy at Jos A. Bank vs. his stuff and he will drop some knowledge. Highly recommend him for sure.

Edit after reading some of the other posts: one thing people don't take into consideration too is the tailoring and definitely makes a huge difference in appearance. A lot of folks will see a JAB suit and say it's "just as good for less" but they don't realize they can get a bespoke made which will already be tailored net/net for nearly the same price.

Maybe Im just too practical (ie cheap) but $700 for a one or two time suit??? Unless I was in a setting where my appearance was scrutinized to the point that it could affect my job/income Id just look mediocre in a cheap-er suit and keep the cash. But that's just me.

I tend to agree...when I had to wear suits daily, I had 5 of the $2-300 not-even-altered variety I wore almost daily. I had 2-3 $750-1000 suits I wore when my bosses were in 2-3 days/month. And then I had one $3k suit I wore when I had to go to corporate once a quarter. Before that I wore the same $200 suit I got in high school that didn’t even fit any more and was missing buttons. That said, I’ve always had a thing for button down shirts...I’ll drop $150 on shirt without thinking twice. But I’ll wear a button down as frequently as a T-shirt.

If you sit on the back row at church...you can pick out every Belks suit. And every really nice suit. Just from the shoulders and collars, how they fit and hang. There is a difference.

Hell, just start with getting fitted. Even if you don't have the jacket altered, you're already ahead of the game.

That goes double for your shirt. Find out what size you actually are, and get a shirt that fits. Don't do that shit where you think you might be a 17.5x35 regular, but you're actually a 15x32 slim.

I suspect that once you have a decent suit that fits you, you'll find reasons to wear it. Somebody's always dying or getting married.

That's the only time I put a suit on. And at that, Maybe once every 2-3 years, for a funeral. Majority of funeral's I'd attend, have become Casual.

Nothing usable to add. When I need a suit I rely on Uncle Sam. Been wearing it for 17 years and it works lol

Only time I wore a suit was my brothers wedding. I was his best man and he asked me to. I rented what he told me and it was the most uncomfortable thing I've ever worn. So I say if you have to wear one get it custom fit so you won't be completely misserble.

Disclaimer-
I wore a pair of jeans and a shirt to my wedding so I might not be qualified to answer you question.

So if you want something a little more baller then men’s whatehouse, where to go?

In Charlotte I’d hit up Bruce Julian’s. He has stuff on the rack beyond what you’ll find at the big box stores and can do full custom. Bloody Mary’s are darn good and when he has a sale it’s not too bad.

Aight, some of yall do this poor redneck a favor! Right off the bat, the only two suits I own came from my dad (We both wear the exact same sizes, right down to shoes), and goodwill. I got the goodwill suit for $12 and it makes me actually enjoy wearing a suit. Feels nice, fits well (I think?) and matches my boots great. That said, what should one look for in a suit? Im starting to wear them more often and wouldnt mind having a couple for some options. What is the difference, other than fit, between Walmart, Belk, Jos A. Banks, and tailored stuff ? Until this year, I had worn a suit 3 times, and they were all rentals.

Quality of materials, mass produced vs one off by a tailor would be the two that come to mind.
I can usually make sport coats work off the rack with a little altering but shirts are tougher as most makers seem to assume that anyone with my neck size and arm length must weigh 300 pounds so shirts “puff out” way too much around the middle.
I finally found one that works (other than the cuffs are a bit big for my taste) so I’m saving money again.
As infrequently as you need it I’d keep doing what you’re doing.

Matt if this is a suit you’ll be wearing more than once or twice I bet you wouldn’t mind paying for @rcalexander105 suggestion. I know how hard it is for me to get a jacket and a shirt to fit my shoulders and taper in so I don’t look like a 55 gallon drum. I got 2 shirts from Jos A that were so big they couldn’t even be tailored by a seamstress before I spent a day shopping for one that could. I would’ve saved a lot of time if I’d just had one made.

followup question. If the pants are sized properly, how hard would it be to have some extra fabric or padding added at about the 0530 position, to prevent printing?

Yep.
You and I are shaped similar.
On a dress shirt for example, if I want to button the tie button, it has to be a 20.5" neck minimum...and even thats uncomfortable. But any off the rack shirt made to that neck size....well I can leave the top button undone and the wife can crawl in with me....which is great for sexy time...but not business meetings.

A bespoke men's dress shirt really isnt that expensive. You can get them hand stitched from hong kong for <$80 tailored just to you. With quality materials.

Tailored pants are going to be way to thin to IWB carry.
Thats what shoulder harnesses were made for, literally
