Do they work? Do your diffs seep oil the first time you whack the cover on a rock (like with RTV)?

Discuss.

I've had great luck with them but they can seem to wear out. I check my diffs after nearly every wknd outing and haven't remembered to order more.

Have a few friends that they work well for. You can use a lot of RTV for how much they are though. That reminds me that both my diff's leak a little and I should fix them.

All four of ours leak, and one of them is leaking enough now that it left a big ass puddle in the trailer.

They work for about 5 cycles. They're not as thick as you'd expect, so I would only recommend using them with a HD diff cover (flat mounting surface) vs a stamped steel cover. Used them on the racer. Removal/emergency repair is way easier than RTV- that is the only benefit I see.

I will bring you some sealant that will hold up.

Spend 5 minutes with a nice wide Nicholson or US made file on the housing and cover and your leaks should go away. If it's a stamped steel cover, don't overtighten them. If it's one of those covers with a 1/2" thick plate at the bolts, tighten it to infinity, and beyond.

Ran these in South Florida for years. Changed my diff fluid regularly down there with all of the swamp muck a d Everglades wheeling. They do great for a while, but wear out and leak after a bit. I went back to rtv...

I think Lube lockers work great. That's the technology that many gaskets are using these days.

That being said, the usual problem isn't the gasket not working. Its the sealing surfaces get bent wheeling. They dont have to be bent much to cause a leak. Im sure HD covers help, but I have bent those around the bottom as well. (Sorry folks, while the "HD" covers are "bullet proof" the flanges are still prone to warping once they take a good whack!) And stock covers are going to leak if you wheel...period!

Another thing that does it is when a cover takes a good lick, head on, it compresses and deforms the gasket, (or compresses the RTV and unseals it). Even if the cover flange doesn't warp, the gasket thickness has changes in that area, so it will leak!

Im also guessing, taking the cover on and off enuff times and they will no longer seal.

Mine leak constantly after one ride on a freshly sealed cover. I ignore the very small drips. when it gets worse, I reseal them!

meh, just use 'great stuff' and go on about life

I have them on the LJ with HD covers with no leaks. Rear has only been off once, front has been off a few times.

What is it?

It is sealant I use at work from Toyota , I have sealed things wet with gear oil ,dirty, uneven, wet, and always holds. Even if the seal surface shifts a little. I have never had a diff cover leak, the bottom of my front and rear 44 is beat to crap, smacked the cover many times.

The thread title just made me think of a dirty gun safe looking thing sitting in the corner of a bachelor's bedroom, kinda the opposite of a "hurt locker". Oh and i use Motorcraft RTV silicone sealant "for use on 7.3 engines. No issues thus far but I'm easy on my buggy.

That's with a ballistic weld on shave kit and the Motorcraft RTV, been sitting in same spot over a month.
