After spending 40 years sleeping hours, on my Water Bed, I've decided to buy a new bed. But, the Sticker shock, knocked me out! First I went to the Sleep Number Mattress store, as I found their ads interesting. Undecided on getting an Adjustable bed, but it would be a plus, I think. No thanks, I can't part with 4 - 6K dollars, for a bed! I entered a Sleep Mattress store, by mistake, & OMG, their even Higher! I was just looking at The Original Mattress, on-line, but several of the reviews, really give me pause! Looked at Ads like "The 10 Top Mattress's", & Too high, too confusing, & On-line buying. I would need a Complete bed, frame, box spring, or box, & the mattress. How do I decide? What's Your experience? Is the adjustable frame, worth it? No, I don't have acid reflux. Anyone here a Seller?

I bit the bullet about 8 years ago and bought a C2 Sleep Number King with the adjustable base. I didn't feel that I needed all the bells and whistles of the more expensive models. I also went from a waterbed. It's certainly not a waterbed but it's decent. I do have my side lifted a bit and that feature was extremely useful after my knee surgeries. Made life much easier when I couldn't move my leg well the 2 weeks immediately after each knee was done.

I also wasn't keen on spending that kind of money but in hindsight, it was probably worth it.

I bought a queen bed to replace an old one a few years ago from Big Lots It was on sale so Mattress and box springs were $400.00 and it's fine. It's for a spare room but several have slept on it and no complaints. Also Sam's Club and Costco have them also. You'll have to find the bed frame on your own but that shouldnt be a big deal. Get an extra firm pillow top if possible. Don't go for all of the gimmickry. Personally I sleep on a Simmons King extra firm with pillow top that's about 20 years old and its very comfy.

Wife bought some kinda hipster mattress in a box thing and it is ok, but our old mattress in a box was stiffer and therefore better. I hate soft, fluffy mattresses. @Jody Treadway sells mattress covers that are about the right stiffness for me.

I should also note that the Sleep Number purchase was a "Yes Dear" purchase. She decided she couldn't sleep on the water bed any more.

I will also say that my son bought a couple of memory foam mattresses from Ollies that are actually comfortable. No base or frames though but that can be easily rectified. I know Sam's has bed frames for about $50.

I ordered this Zinus mattress on amazon two years ago, but it was about $200 cheaper. Zinus was highly recommended on pirate/irate, and they have several to choose from. No complaints about mine, but it was pretty firm for about a week or two after unrolling it.

I've bought all my mattresses from Ollie's Bargain bin. Name brand stuff. I usually opt for princess pillow top mattresses, because I'm delicate and want to feel special. Then I go to kohl's and buy their 4" egg shell memory foam cooling topper (when on sale can be had for under $100, otherwise it's like $3-400+ for king size). The last king size I put in a guest bedroom, the mattress and topper, I was all in for under $400, and I've yet to find a bed more comfortable than the combo I noted. I've done several 30/45/60/90 day trials on $1000+ mattresses, and they're nice, but I don't find them to be any more comfortable or allow me to get any better sleep.

We bought an Original Mattress Factory mattress last year. Been fantastic, no regrets. Nothing fancy. Had been on a Serta and an equivalent replacement was about 3.5k for the set. Not worth it, because that set was wore out after 6 years. OMF was about 900/set. Old school two sided, so you can flip and turn.

Also had them do a custom size to replace the floppy mattress in the motorhome. IIRC, it was only like $50 extra for custom mattress/no box.

Sleep number here as well. First expensive bed we have bought. I love being able to adjust it depending on how my body feels. Sometimes a little softer works, sometimes I just want to lay flat on a super firm mattress. If I was able to travel more in the RV, I would have one there as well.

We have a Casper, latex mattress in a box, on top of wtfever box spring we bought with a Sealy 20-something years ago. Got the Casper maybe 3 years ago and perfectly happy.

I wil lsay, the process of having a matteres arive in a box that looks waaaay to small, then opening it and watching that sucker pop out and expand is prety entertaining.
Wife found it too firm so she called and they mailed us a plush topper for it.

We got Serta Temper Pedic, I had to ask the wife again....she reminded me what it cost. Wish I had not..... Was not the highest but darn enough. I like it just below @jeepinmatt level. The thing is pretty firm but I dont care what the salesman said it remembers my ass. It is also horrible to hold heat. Not bad if your suitable for a roll in Frozen like the wife. Me, I require a ceiling fan and 68 degrees to lay in it comfortable.

So I pretty much hate the damn thing.

Thanks for the commits, so far, guys. I'm Surprised at the number of you that went with the Sleep Number. Things I do like about them, the ability to tune it to my comfort, & the "temperature adapting material". I hate getting in a Cold bed, & hoping My spot warms up! Seems Not to be a problem with Sleep Number. Great feature with the water-bed, I can adjust the temp! Several guys bought from discount stores or on-line, but I feel like, other than the spare bed, I need a setting [showroom] where I can try it out! I think I want a Plush, bed, but it may be a Medium. I don't want Firm. O my Gosh, the Prices!

Mattress stores are a damn scam. The same mattress at 3 different stores are called another name so you can’t price shop. And the sales people are just as slimy as used car lot people. Walk out and they offer you a better deal

My last 2 have been from bed in a box. One brand I don’t know from Amazon for like 350
And super nice for our guest bed. We just got a nectar about 2 months ago for our bed. I love it. It’s plush though which we like. We were able to lay on it at a rooms to go to make sure we liked it. But there it had a different name too. So even they have got into that game for retailers.

Bed in a box often has a no questions like 120 day min trial and if you don’t like it. Full refund and they will organize a pickup for it

DMS, I'll look into that. I Did walk out on Sleep Number, 6 weeks back. No, they didn't call me back. I went back in a few days ago, thinking maybe a different salesperson or Manager would give me a better deal. I dealt with the manager, & only got Their reasons they are Not allowed to make deals, or cut price, below what is advertised. I will say they have their Sleep Number system, that No one else has. And maybe the temp adjusting material too, unless it's the same as Tempur-Pedic.

Things like this make it clear how rediculous the profit margin is on mattresses... when not only can you have stores that have very little foot traffic, but companies mailing mattrresses, and whe nyou don't like it it's just refunded then thrown away.
Its been discussed here before. Seems like somebody thats in the industry mentioned the profit margin is like 80% or something.

Plus think about what a low turnover sales item it is.

The best mattress I ever owned was ~$1000 Serta. I’ve done several bed in a box brands and been disappointed with all of them. Costco mattresses seem to be pretty decent and what we have on my daughters bed. Foam mattresses suck because of the heat retention. We replaced our bed in a box mattress about a year ago with a premium model mattress from Industries For The Blind here in Winston. Within 6 months, it was sagging on my side in the hip area. We threw a 3” foam topper (from Costco) on it, which helped tremendously. I’d say it’s ‘good enough’ for now, but I expect we will be replacing it in a year or two. My next mattress will be a Marriott hotel mattress and pillow set. The sleep number sounds interesting. I’ll definitely check it out before dropping thousands on the hotel mattress. It hurts my feelings to think about spending thousands of dollars on a mattress.

The wife built us a mattress last year. We ordered several boxed mattresses and only found one we liked. Problem was it started showing wear within a month. We sent that sucker back. We built one with the same specs with better materials.

She started researching, god knows how long, and decided the best way was to build exactly what we want. We played around with it a while and wound up with a nice bed for much less of a cost. Best part is if any of it starts to show wear, we can unzip the cover and replace piece by piece. You can also build one side different than the other. That's what we did, since she is a side sleeper and I'm a back sleeper.

It has a spring base, with, I think, 3 layers on top. Then a bamboo zippered cover.

Sleep number I think is one of the brands that plays in the premium price tier and doesn’t play those games that some others do. But there is always a deal online it seems. It’s also funny that they have “limited edition” beds. It’s a damn bed.

We have a king Sleep Number smart bed and I love it but $$$

We have a king Zinus we bought from WM online in the spare room, the 10” firm model, and if I’m honest I love it more….and just over $300 shipped. It was our main mattress here before we moved permanently.

I recommend them all the time and several folks have bought and all thank me.

Same here, sleeping on an Original mattress that has pillow top on both sides to flip. After 20+years 😬 it is still comfortable, slight dip in the middle but not bad. We flip and rotate on a fairly regular basis when I remember. The fabric on the mattress is actually wearing thin at this point. We have talked about getting a newer memory foam one or whatever but I've heard of the stories about the foam not breathing and getting to hot.
Or course mattresses are subjective to each individual just like shoes or boots, what is comfortable for one could be a nightmare for another.
