Metal Carports

Good friend of mine went this very route.

From what I've been told, best case, you'd likely have to get it brought up to code and retroactively permitted if you ever sold it, depending on the buyer. Worst case, you may have a pile of back taxes to pay and hope that the zoning hasn't changed since you built it without permits or you may be forced to tear it down (unlikely that a garage/carport will be granted a retroactive variance from what I've been told). I don't see the benefit of gambling with a structure of any significant cost.

The good thing about a carport is that you can just pick it up and move it. ;)

Same with a neighbor (elderly neighbor on dialysis, no less). He had a big carport to house his camper with a gravel driveway from the street to his back yard. Also had detached 2 car garage extended off his concrete driveway. Both buildings had been there at least 5 years, and looked perfectly fine. Neighborhood didn't have any HOA, but new couple bought the house across the street, didn't like the way the buildings looked, apparently. Complained to somebody (neighborhood was half city, half county), and my neighbor was given the option of taking everything down...or paying some hefty fees and fines along with getting the appropriate permits and getting the driveway and second garage up to code.
and then?

It's an $800 metal carport, not a 10k$ building structure. I simply want it delivered and set up in timely manner. The first was put up 14 years ago. It's still standing just fine today. I'm setting the new one up the exact same way. It's not rocket science.

I'd be okay with a carport going that route, there's not much to them. Mine is an actual building. 14' x 22' or something like that. The back end of it is nearly 3 feet off the ground.

And then?

I can appreciate the fact you guys probably don't care for me, and that's fine, I don't give a rats ass. It's the internet. But how about not derailing legit threads that aren't controversial from the get go. You want to poke the bear, by all means, go for it...start an "I hate Ben thread" for all I care (I can give you links to dedicated groups)...but how about a little more respect for Granny.

I don't think McCracken has any bad feelings towards ya, he is like a small child and gets bored at work so he just rambles and sees if he can get someone butt hurt.

Since this is about car ports/ garages I was planning on putting one up next spring but now I'm having second thoughts about doing so without a permit

I have no beef...just didn't want a legit thread turning in to a shit storm on my behalf...I derail enough shit as is.

Who the fuck are you?

My carport went up today! It took exactly 3 weeks. I was told 3-4 weeks and they delivered as promised. Believe it or not, Eagle carports called me about 11 am this morning, just after the other crew left, to schedule the carport order that I cancelled 3 weeks ago. It seems that what I heard about them might just be true. Steel Buildings & Structures sent a crew of 4 Mexicans (in a NEW Dodge Ram Diesel Crew Cab) who were clean, spoke English well, and clearly knew what they were doing. It took them about 30 minutes from start to finish and the job was done. They were courteous and waited patiently for me to drill the holes and bolt the bottom rails to the posts and 4x4s the way I wanted it done. I am pleased, and recommend this company.
