This seemed like the best place to post this:

Anyone on here have anything to do with metal carports (Concord/Salisbury area)? I need one!.... and I am ready for it as of right now. Any dealers or installers on this forum? If so, I would like to hear from you! I called the BBB this morning and was advised to be very cautious of the big chain dealers.

I went with tnt carports when I bought mine. I think they are out of Mt airey. I ordered in the winter in the slow season and saved some money. I bought the 18x20 enclosed with a garage door. God that garage was miserable hot in the summer.

for what it's worth IF you're handy with carpentry or have friends that can help: I built a 24'x36' x10ft ceiling garage (pole barn type) for same price as 16x24carport and that includes the concrete slab for the shop. I know not everyone can but just a thought of how much more you can do for your money. If you don't need the concrete slab, that's 1500ish cheaper so you could have same size carport you're looking at for fraction of the cost..and inspections are very simple since the "pole barn" is very simple easy classification and hardly no regulations on them. just thought, good luck in the hunt though!

Don,

I did a lot of researching on these things and one thing I found was it doesn't really matter who you buy it through the process is damn near identical; 90% percent of the time the people and building comes from Mt. Airy, and they are almost always manufactured by Carolina Carports.

I used Scott's Carports out of Asheville simply because I could build it, order it, and pay my down payment online. Mine was big (24x41x13 tall), I ordered it online 7/13/2016, they called and said it built and confirmed my pad was ready on 7/18/2016, called for scheduling 7/20/2016, and installed the building 7/25/2016. This is lightning fast in my opinion. I would definitely recommend using Scott's Carports out of Asheville.

Specs: Vertical roof style (best one they make), 24' wide x 41' long x 13' legs, rear gable end, and sides enclosed = $7190 installed

@John B. With the pad? 4 inch with wire or fibermesh?

My reason for starting this thread...

I ordered a carport from Eagle Carports on Monday 7/11. Shortly after, I was talking with a friend and told him I was getting a carport. When I mentioned Eagle Carports he looked like I had shot him. He jumped right in with Oh Lord have mercy on you, they're the worst in the country, etc. Naturally, he roused my curiosity so I jumped on Google. What I found was that Eagle, and four others, had been investigated by the BBB and had an "F" rating (see link below).

Hundreds of Complaints Lead BBB to Investigate NWNC Carport Industry - High Country Press

In addition, I also came across this one: 36 EAGLE CARPORTS complaints and reviews @ Pissed Consumer

The review regarding the Friday only installations seemed dead-on as they started right out with the same story on me. I received two calls from them between 7/11 and 7/29 and it was clearly obvious that the only day they would install a carport in my area was on Friday. When I asked about the other 4 days of the work week the woman's reply was that she would tell her boss and she hung up the phone. On Friday 7/29 I cancelled the contract. Saturday (yesterday) I contracted again with Bunce Buildings. Bunce has an A+ rating with BBB, so I am hoping things work out this time.

I appreciate the replies and opinions. Hopefully, the info on this thread might save someone else some grief.

John, that is a fine looking building you have there. Your's is a little more upscale than mine will be! :)

You should look up the BBB thread on here before you put too much faith in that A+ rating ;)

I wish. The pad was more than the building. Can't tell from the pic but I basically widened and extended my driveway as the pad. Roughly 24x95 ft. Came in at 36.25 yards and $7980 for concrete, finishing, cutting, and sealing. 3500# mix with fiber.

Eagle, TNT, Carolina and probably 3 others are all located in Mount Airy and all run by Mezzikans. Each company is just a different part of the family. Read between the lines..."Business" isnt hurting when their front yard has 3-4 new Dodge dually's in it at any given time.

What I figured.

Mostly asked to clear that part. All my steel building researching have netted the same result. Pad and grading nearly equals the building. Then it's that whole we need electricity and lighting thing...

Can you get an iwanna in your area I was looking at one the other day and they were offering concrete with building packages. I think it was 12-1300 for a 24x24 building. Idk if I would suggest going that way I couldn't buy the concert for that at 4" think and that's with out the finished and reinforced mesh

That's what I've run in to as well...$8-10k in a building with 2 10' roll up doors. $7k in concrete. Then another 3-5k in finish work. I have difficulty paying $20-25k for a metal building to simply house my vehicles. For an extra 5-10k you can get a 3-4 bay garage built that matches your house with second floor living space.

Saturday (yesterday) I contracted again with Bunce Buildings. Bunce has an A+ rating with BBB, so I am hoping things work out this time.

Bunce never pulls permits for anything. They also do not set their buildings to code 99% of the time. I've got a Bunce here that was put in before I bought the house, maybe 8 years ago. The floor is starting to peel up in one spot already. The homeowner at the time had them install a wood stove and they totally botched the job and made a mess of everything. The also tied directly into the main house electrical with no permit, so I honestly have no idea A. where the line goes, and B. whether it was even installed correctly. I won't know till I catch it with a tiller or something.

I'd make your contract conditional on them setting it up to code. Most of the time it's pretty simple, the building just needs to be tied down. They'll make you pull the permits, but they shouldn't cost much and you know it's done right. Bunce is just as shady as the rest. If they won't provide you with engineer stamped plans without paying extra, run, don't walk away.

It's an $800 metal carport, not a 10k$ building structure. I simply want it delivered and set up in timely manner. The first was put up 14 years ago. It's still standing just fine today. I'm setting the new one up the exact same way. It's not rocket science.

I didn't see it here, or I missed it, but several years ago, the "consensus" was, The cheap price carports were Chinese Metal, & the more expensive one's were USA.
Just saying>.

No, the cheap advertised prices won't pass code. I bought my first building (that the buggy was built in) in 2001, 24x25. Tried to do it right, paid eagle carports, went to county, was told gauge wouldn't pass code. Called eagle, code building was a grand more. Same issue with TNT, and Carolina. Told the county I wouldn't be building. Called eagle back told them to have it up in two hours with two crews and we had a deal. Spent 6g for concrete and structure. Wired and buried cable myself.

Fast forward to 2010-2012. Spent 5g on grading, 6g on gravel, 3g on footing/ block/ and concrete, 21g on dried in stick built structure [(28x48 with 2 sheds at 27x16), 2 roll up doors, 2 garage doors, 1 man door, 2 windows]. Buried (250' to meter), wired, insulated, paneled, metal ceiling, lighting, shelving myself, and finish grading. Roughly 5g more. Rough total on just the building, 30g.

Moral of the story, we build what we can afford at whatever age/ financial point we are at in our lives. Would I ever by carport style again?...not if I can afford better. But, that old metal pos afforded me the space to teach myself and build my toys to the best of my knowledge at the time, cheap Chinese metal and all...just like most of my tools...[emoji2]

PS. Neither building was built with permits

Matt

PS. Neither building

Good friend of mine went this very route.

Then in 2014 google maps updated the aerial view of his property. I guess someone at the tax office was reviewing it and he got a visit from them. They wanted to survey his property because of suspected buildings that were never permitted.

Yeah...that was an expensive visit

Same with a neighbor (elderly neighbor on dialysis, no less). He had a big carport to house his camper with a gravel driveway from the street to his back yard. Also had detached 2 car garage extended off his concrete driveway. Both buildings had been there at least 5 years, and looked perfectly fine. Neighborhood didn't have any HOA, but new couple bought the house across the street, didn't like the way the buildings looked, apparently. Complained to somebody (neighborhood was half city, half county), and my neighbor was given the option of taking everything down...or paying some hefty fees and fines along with getting the appropriate permits and getting the driveway and second garage up to code.

apparently. Complained to somebody .

"Jewish lightning" is so random and so unforgiving.....especially when it happens to nosey neighbors unexpectedly

Thank you, Matt! ...and very well said!

If the Good Lord gives me another 15 years, I will be 85. If I inherit my mother's and grand-father's genes I probably won't know who I am, and whether or not the carport fell down will be the least of my concerns. Y'all have posted good points, and I thank ya for postin' 'em!

I'll let ya know when I get mine put up, and how long it took. :)
