trying to decide if what I have to get rid of is worth my time. with work, a 1 yr old, house chores, etc... I wonder if I'd be better off offering what I have to someone willing to come get it.

thinking of things like worn out leaf springs, bumpers beyond repair, etc... what $ do you get per pound? I'd probably use the Wise recycling place on HWY 16 near i85 since it's close to me. I assume they would just weigh my truck/trailer before and after??

Yeah scale in,unload, scale out,see the lady at the window. No coffee, tea or punch, thank you Mrs Wiley.Scrap is soo low right now, imo, its not worth haulin

$2.50 is ridiculous!

Chattanooga is currently at $5/100 and $5.75/100 depending on which yard you choose.

Still not great, but at least its back on the upswing.

All 3 major US mills just released a second $30/ton price increase. That puts domestic production at $60/ton higher than it was at the beginning of December.

Scrap prices will (should) see a slight rise over the next few weeks. Whether it sticks or not is anyone's guess.

With all of the trade cases and Section 201 talk in the works regarding that bullshit Chinese steel, I'm hoping that we can see a bit of separation between the markets.

The first pricing increase seemed to stick pretty quickly, this second one is already getting folks in a buy-now-before-another-increase kinda mood it seems.

*fingers crossed*

FWIW, I got $4/100 at 109 in Winston- Salem in late December.

Still not worth hauling, I was just cleaning up.
4.5 here in rocky mount
Maybe I need to check again.

$2.50/100 here right now.NC might be .50 different.
Guess I should have clarified that was for short steel, which I assumed was what he had,not complete cars.Whole cars is/was about .75 per lbs more.

Same here. I got $4/100 at Omnisource in Kernersville right after Christmas.

Lets keep this updated! I am currently sitting on about 5k lbs of brake rotors that I don't want to give away either.

FYI omni source will set up a commeracial account at negotiated markups with...anyone if you reach a sales guy.

Since China "was" by far the number one buyer of US scrap metal and the reason the price pushed up to begin with, it will most likely remain what it is until they get their shit together over there. And that ain't looking likely for at least 4-5 years they are saying?

Got about 2-3k just in frames stacked up myself holding dirt down at the shop. Not counting 4-5 potential vans and trucks.

I went to Foils today. You can tell nobody is scraping because there was hardly anyone there. I cleaned out an old shed for a friend. His grandfather passed and he horded everything. I took 342lbs of copper wire and left with $322. It would have been about 1200 dollars back at the height of prices.

That copper price was in early 08. Hasn't been over $3 in almost three years. The tell tale sign of good things to come in scrap is when the price of gas goes up. Gordon's iron and metal in Statesville has been in business almost a century, they have never closed for lunch or before 5:30 pm, guess what changed late 2015? Go to kitco.com and check the gold/platinum/rhodium/palladium historical charts, look at that trend back far as 5 years. Also check out the base metal historical charts,(non ferrous metals ex-cu, al, pb).

I've only been in the business 10 years, but I'm told that it won't be a quick turn, more like a 5-7 year climb, and that $10/100lb on steel may never return.

China is not the only problem, France, Greece, and Japan's economies aren't any help either.

What kind of copper did you sell? Bare #1, #2, insulated?

Reason I ask, because today's price sheet I would get paid
Bb- 1.84
#1- 1.80
#2- 1.65

Insulated depending on grade .24-1.45.

All my customers ask me when steel will be back to 15/100lb, cats average 100, batteries 16, wheels 20...and my reply is always...."when you see gas at near $5 at the pump"

I'm probably the only person on this board who wishes for that...

I wish for it also, for about two weeks.Thats how long it would take me to purge this place. One upside to it is you can actually buy an old truck (what fews left) and not hear "I can crush it for more than that".I know of two big places that Omni source has closed in the past few months.

here's the deal - I'd rather let someone come get my stuff and add to their collection to take for scrap versus me do it. If anyone is interested let me know. Not ready right at the moment but will be in a few weeks

I figured it would be awhile before it went back up. I just cleared off another piece of land and started moving all my junk cars there, it's not worth the trouble for $3 a hundred. I've got about 60 Mercedes parts cars if anyone needs anything because they won't be getting crushed anytime soon.
