My 1st grader wants to play it because his best friend at school talks about it. What is it? What do I need to know about it? Will it make him dumb? Will it make him gay? Will it teach him how to set stuff on fire? Is the free version different from the $27 version? What is the point of it?

Gives kids the opportunity to build, buy and barter.
I saw no harm in it.
Some kids become boss ass slum lords and Elon musk all their friends.
Older kids have relations with mother's of those who rival them.

It's a right of passage

There is also an educational version of it.

A handful of my nieces and nephews, aged 13 - 6, play. I can’t quite figure it out because to me it’s just like virtual Lego? Which confuses me.
I’m sure it’s in my very near future with the girls.

My 5yr old wants to play also, he’s played at his haircut place. I’m very on the fence about it. I remember when online games were yelling at each other, cussing and sayin I’m gonna skull fuck your mom…. I don’t want him to hear that stuff or him say it yet

Will make them liberals, and dumb as Rocks if you want your kids to live with you I til they are 45 let them play. It is what every journalist and professor played before they got their big boy jobs. Run away, as fast as you can, destroy whatever system they have and buy them a jeep to build for when they can drive when the can reach the pedals.

Well....maybe I'm exaggerating it's harmless.

Is this the kind that is high functioning ASD? It could be really good for him. It is very popular among ASD kids, and has been used in many ways to teach structure and provide an alternative means of communication (I know your son isn't that far down the spectrum).

Jonas absolutely loved it. He mostly built stuff in Creative mode. Like hours and hours and hours of building stuff.
Creative mode is like virtual legos. But without the fun of screaming in pain when you step on one or having to clean up a million pieces. :D.In the online versions people set up serversthat host worlds they built. Its mind boggling the shit people have people, like complete replicas of entirereal cities.
Check these out
Here's one of Middle Earth.

and then there's this

Ill be looking into that. David loves to build and I have been thinking that he might like minecraft. Hes still a little young though.

As for minecraft in general, I play it some when I had a tablet. Have been meaning to put it on our laptop. I just play in create mode or freeplay or whatever they call it.

My kids play it. My daughter and her friends play together. I'm not real fond of my 6 year old hollering, "die, die, die". Evidently you can kill stuff like spiders, llamas, horses, wolves and other stuff. It's gotten to the point of taking his tablet away but other than that I don't have any real objections.

When I looked at the title, I thought that was what you would call your new repair shop! So many guys on here opening their shops, I figured it was time you did! :D
