Mini-buggy Pictures(request)

No, not going to the Flats. We're going to Harlan next weekend, so unfortunately can't make both.

Where you staying? I'll be with a group of yota's camped behind Dairy Hut. Would love to see it in action. Does this Rock Ape guy sell the chassis, or did someone copy it?

There is a severe lack of tech in that build thread...LOL. I want to build a small 2-seat buggy on yota axles, but still unsure about the drivetrain. I'm thinking either honda or electric right now.

Rock Ape's chassis is a single seater only. As mentioned above, my buggy was built by a local guy.

We're staying across from the first gas station you pass. We've got 5 buggies going, keep an eye out for me and we'll hit some trails.

What kind of info you want? I didn't build it but I'll help as much as I can.

And I finally weighed it a few weeks ago. 2,940 without me in it. Would be a lot lighter but I've got the front tires filled half way with water. 51% front and 49% rear weight distribution.

I'm mainly in research mode. I don't have any specific questions just yet. I know next to nothing about the different Honda engines and transaxles so I'm really just trying to read everything I can about what works and what doesn't for this type of setup.

Mine has a JDM DOHC ZC 1.6l engine with an automatic transmission from an 88-91 US Honda Civic.

The DOHC ZC engine is a bit unique, it is DOHC like a B-series engine but it is actually a D-series engine. Mine has enough power for most situations but I'm probably going to add a small turbo next winter. Another 30hp or so would make it perfect.

There was a small buggy powered by a Honda ATV engine that was in the for sale section forever. I don't remember who had it but it already had axles mounted and all. Might be worth checking into and see if its still available. @strange1 im with untchble what day y'all going down to Harlan? We will be there Thurs if you see 2 big goosenecks at the house across from the first gas station stop in and say hi.

I want something slightly larger than this:

I had the idea to do a mini bouncer, single seater with yotas on 33s, 4 banger power and super light! Keep us updated if you do one.

It's light, small, fast, and cool looking.

It along with what most of you guys are talking about isn't what I would consider mini. While the Honda/zuk buggies are small and light, I consider the mini-buggies like 1/2 scale. Maybe that's cuz I wheel a zuk.

I want something slightly larger than this:

This thing has an atv engine in it (300cc I believe). sj410 axles.

I've been building a mini jeep for a few months now with SJ410 axles.

I used to 125cc chinese motor with a semi auto and reverse, with 2 jack shafts to a samurai T case. I wanted to use a bigger motor, but didn't have room due to the body being so small. The wheel base is around 45".

Also it depends on what you want to use it for. If just crawling/ slow riding around the house, there are a ton of engine options. The trans is the hard part if you want reverse. If you need reverse you must typically use a vehicle/atv trans or expensive dune buggy box. If you want something that can run at speed (20-30mph) you are likely in the vehicle drivetrain territory.

Building something completely based on a larger atv would get you small and light, but not really cheap and smaller tires. You would basically have a SxS at that point also.

bump.

any new or useful info on this topic in the past few years?

also... at most atv parks, how big do they frown on home made SxS? like the trackers mentioned earlier?

There has been a lot of progress on this topic the last few years. Lots of cool kid buggies out there.

I finally got mine built for the girls. Well, @MarsFab built it. Samurai axles, samurai transfer case, Arctic Cat 400cc engine, 14” air shocks, 4 link front and rear
