Mobile hotspot?

Do any of you use a mobile hotspot for your laptop while traveling? If so how do you like it and where did you get yours?
 
I use my phone as a hotspot. What are the benefits of not using that?

Ditto.

Primary benefit of a dedicated device is that it's easier for sharing. E.g. have it running and a couple guys tap in, you can walk away from it and they don't lose their access ;-).
Also the dedicated devices can handle a larger bandwidth (multiple people at once etc.
If its jut for your own use on the road, just use your phone.
 
As others had said, your phone probably would work. Need to be aware of your data plan/limits/bandwidth throttling. Also, it goes with you and can't be left behind if family needs internet.

We used a tmobile Franklin T9 hotspot for over a year with the kids in virtual school. It worked ok and was 50/month if prepaid. We did school from the camper at Uwharrie, the beach...

We've since changed to the tmobile home 5g which is much faster but not portable.
 
I got one with Verizon. Worked well for the kids stuff while traveling, and for my wife to do work stuff.

The only reason I actually got one, was because Verizon dropped the ability for your phones to access the Hotspot feature, without adding it to the plan. So I got a Hotspot, not knowing they had added it back. Now I'm stuck on a contract, and the damn hotpot doesn't even charge now. I need to.ge tit replaced.

But it is nice to have the kids attached to the Hotspot, and I could leave where we were staying, go pick up food, groceries, what have you, and not "take the internet with me".
 
There are ways to hack very cheap hotspots also for unlimited use for like 20 bucks a month.... do some searching and you can find out how.
 
I got a verizon hotspot that I used for work that I have kept for travel since I retired. Works great. Unlimited plan on all phones, this is 10 bucks a month added on. Supposed to throttle after so many GB in case of network congestion. I've used up to 100g a month, and never seen a speed reduction.

Also have ATT mobly for the house. 20 bucks a month true unlimited, at about 30-40mbps. Only other alternative right now is DSL, which on our road only runs about 1 mb/s. Waiting for Starlink to be available here.
 
We have to use a hotspot for Internet at the house. Ours does well with the 65gig rollover plan from t mobile. Strong enough for multi cameras in the yard .
 
I hotspot with my work phone on the road (T-mobile). I don’t bother with hotel internet anymore. Sometimes it’ll drop if the signal isn’t strong or when I’m in a moving vehicle. That’s pretty annoying. I’m assuming it’s a tmobile issue, you’d probably be fine with any of the big name carriers.

T-Mobile has no issues. They are German.
